The Games of April 2014

gamesofapril2014-header

April is finally upon us, and with it, hopefully some better weather! But that doesn’t matter for the Warp Zoned crew – that is, unless we’re playing our handhelds outside. It’s also nearly time for PAX East, which has us pretty excited! Read on to find out what else we’re looking forward to now that Spring has sprung.

March brought a ton of big hitters, but the April release calendar definitely looks to be batting near the Mendoza Line. But that’s not to say I don’t find a few games this month intriguing.

The Deluxe Edition of Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate brings the handheld spinoff’s “Metroidvania” stylings to consoles and the PC. It’s not Arkham Asylum or Arkham City, but I’m interested in playing another side-scrolling Batman game. I’m not sure I’ve done that since 1990. I’m also eager to try out another superhero title this month, The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Even though the consensus of the crowd seems to say that the Spider-Man games haven’t been good in a long time, I’ve enjoyed them all since Web of Shadows. One more… set in a massive open-world New York… yes please.

I’m also excited for a pair of games are expected to be released, but may miss the month of April: Shovel Knight and R.B.I. Baseball 14. I will follow Shovel Knight anywhere, but I’m willing to let Yacht Club Games put the finishing touches on their debut title and put out the best game they think they can. As for R.B.I. Baseball 14, there’s no guarantee it’ll be released in April, but I can’t wait to play a arcade-like baseball game based on one of the greatest sports games of the 80s.

And what the heck, put me down for Child of Light and Rambo. The former, because who doesn’t love action RPGs. And the latter, because it’s Rambo. I know the European reviews have been terrible, but how bad could it be? (Don’t answer that).

There’s not really that much coming out in April that I am interested in playing, other than the final Headhunters DLC from Borderlands 2, Sir Hammerlock vs. the Son of Crawmerax. I’m really hoping it takes more than 10 minutes to play, because I am jonesing to get back to Pandora. And, of course, I’m stoked to get my hands on just about every single thing that will be playable at PAX East!

There is one game to rule them all, one game to find them, one game to bring them all, and in the darkness, bind them: Goat Simulator.

But seriously, I would love to pick up Lego The Hobbit, if I didn’t already have Lego City: Undercover and Lego Marvel Super Heroes both waiting patiently on my shelf of destiny.

Hurry up, May! I want to play Mario Kart 8!!

Mercenary Kings a million times. I have been looking forward to this game so much. It’s been called a mix of Borderlands and Metal Slug, which makes it worth the purchase right there. Add that to the fact that it is programmed by the team that brought you the Scott Pilgrim game? Oh, and it’s a PlayStation Plus freebie? Hell yes! I’ll be playing that one right away. Shovel Knight was delayed to April (probably), so I know I’ll be picking that one up, too.
