Street Fighter producer promises new announcement at Comic-Con 2015

capcomlogo

The Series Producer for the Street Fighter franchise, Yoshinori Ono, held court during this year’s San Diego Comic-Con to talk, not surprisingly, about all things Street Fighter. But much of what Ono had to say was familiar to the mega fans that made up the crowd. Sensing that the fans wanted to hear something juicy, Ono promised that a new announcement concerning the Street Fighter franchise would be made during next year’s Comic-Con.

“I’m sorry, but I don’t have anything to announce today. But next year I will, so please wait,” Ono said.

It’s unknown what Ono has planned for next year, but he did confirm that pre-production work had begun on Street Fighter 5 at this year’s E3 Expo. While a Street Fighter 5 announcement seems likely, earlier in the day, Bandai Namco’s Katsuhiro Harada confirmed that Tekken X Street Fighter is still in development, so who knows what will happen at Comic-Con 2015.

See the first trailer for the Atari: Game Over documentary

Spoiler Alert! When Microsoft went digging in the desert this past April, they found the fabled resting place of thousands of Atari 2600 cartridges (including hundreds of copies of E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial). Over the years, many people tried to pass off the mass burial as some kind of hoax or urban legend. But the truth was never really in doubt. Atari had trouble selling their games during the Christmas season of 1983 and trucked their unsold stock to a landfill in Alamogordo, New Mexico.

So instead of focusing solely on the dig, Zak Penn’s documentary, Atari: Game Over, also looked into the culture of the company at the time and how the then biggest movie of all time could produce such a lousy tie-in game. This includes conversations with Atari executives, local politicians from the Alamogordo area, game historians, and the developer behind the infamous game, Howard Warshaw.

If you were in attendance at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, you had a chance to see the premiere screening of Atari: Game Over for yourself. The rest of us will have to wait until this Fall, when it debuts on Xbox Live as one of the first (and last) Xbox Entertainment Studios offerings. For now, we’ll have to content ourselves with the trailer embedded above.

Nintendo has announced plans to release NES Remix and NES Remix 2 as a retail disc this Fall. According to the Comic-Con announcement, the compilation of retro-inspired minigame collections will be titled NES Remix Pack

A price for NES Remix Pack has yet to be announced, but both games are currently available as eShop downloads for $14.99 apiece. So $29.99 sounds about right for the retail compilation.

Weekly Warp-Up: It Came From Comic-Con 2014

No, that’s not a typo. Welcome to the Weekly Warp-Up, your weekly wrap-up of the biggest and the best articles posted at Warp Zoned this week…

It’s Comic-Con time and game publishers took in the sights of San Diego and made a few big announcements this week including the news that Uncharted movie will open on June 10, 2016. That’s prime blockbuster territory and actually takes the place of The Amazing Spider-Man 3, which has been delayed until 2018. In other big Comic-Con news, the Firefly crew is getting back together to lend their voices to Firefly Online, which will be released next year. Shiny!

And looking back at a different convention, id Software gave fans their first look at Doom 4 during last weekend’s QuakeCon. After some careful consideration, I have decided that hiding this gameplay video from the public is a “Stroke of Genius.”

Finally this week, the Warp Zoned staff gathered around a microphone to debate Our Favorite Games From the PS3/Xbox 360/Wii Era on the latest episode of “Continue Countdown.” Did your favorite make the cut?

More news from the previous week can be found after the break. (more…)

New Releases: Last of Us Remastered, Lego Ninjago: Nindroids, Sacred 3 PC

thelastofus-header

Take heed fellow video game fans, the month of July is almost over! It’s been a rough few weeks for the retail release report, but 2014’s seventh month looks to go out with a bit of a bang. That’s because Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Remastered, a PS4 re-release of the 2013 blockbuster, will be available in stores this week. If you haven’t experienced the story of Joel, Ellie, and their fight to survive a post-apocalyptic America yet, now’s the time.

Also available this is the PC version of Sacred 3, the latest entry in the action RPG series that began in 2008. Sacred 3 will also be available on the PS3 and Xbox 360 in early August.

Finally this week, WB Games and TT Games will bring Lego Ninjago: Nindroids to the 3DS and Vita. The game sequel, which is based on the animated series Lego Ninja Rebooted, will add a sci-fi twist to the popular Lego line.

August will be better, I promise.

The Walking Dead Season 3 confirmed at Comic-Con 2014

walkingdead-header

Kevin Bruner, the President of Telltale Games, and Robert Kirkman, the writer of the original comic, announced that The Walking Dead Season 3 is in development at the San Diego Comic-Con today. The pair weren’t willing to share any additional details about the game’s third season, which is understandable when you realize that The Walking Dead Season 2 still has one episode to go. The fourth episode of Season 2, Amid the Ruins, was released earlier this week.

A release date for The Walking Dead Season 3 wasn’t announced but it may be a while before we can play it as Telltale currently has their hands full with Tales From the Borderlands and Game of Thrones, both of which are expected to begin this Fall.

Tekken X Street Fighter STILL not canceled… but no progress update at Comic-Con 2014

tekkenxstreetfighterteaserAfter the announcement of Tekken 7, it would be easy to assume that Bandai Namco’s focus has drifted elsewhere, but the publisher reconfirmed to Siliconera that Tekken X Street Fighter hasn’t been canceled. Series Producer Katsuhiro Harada revealed that the game is still in development and “moving forward,” but that “it needs its own spotlight.” He also asked fans to relax.

While Harada has confirmed that the game is still in development, there hasn’t been much to excite fans over the years. First announced at Comic-Con 2010 (alongside Street Fighter X Tekken), the game is expected to be a 3D fighter that merges the Tekken and Street Fighter universes. A year later, Harada admitted that Bandai Namco hadn’t even started development yet. Last year, the producer said the game was so shrouded in secrecy that he couldn’t talk about it.

It exists, and that’s probably all we’re getting for now. If it’s still in development for the PS3 and Xbox 360 (or moved to the PS4/Xbox One) remains to be seen.

BioWare’s next game will bring a “Nightmare” to Gamescom 2014

BioWare is still being awfully cagey about what direction Mass Effect 4 will take, but the developer is ready to lift the lid on their next project, an untitled game that has something to do with dreams and nightmares.

A trailer for the game (titled “Nightmare”) teases a bigger reveal at this year’s Gamescom convention, but first we met a terrified young man that is in some horrible dream. It might be gibberish, but a dream analyst would look at the images we’re shown and conclude that a broken lamp symbolizes misfortune or bad luck while the alleyway represents a journey into the unknown. The smoky room implies confusion and anxiety while a doppelganger represents a desire to recapture the past. Finally, light means an understanding or clarity has been reached.

So some sort of misfortune has lead this man on a journey that is confusing. But something in his past will lead to a better understanding of the future and his current situation. The trailer closes by asking “What really happens when we sleep?”, and stating, “You’ve been chosen.” Chosen for what? I’m going to go with demons. It’s usually demons.
