The Games of October 2014

gamesof1014-header

The games go bump in the night this October and gamers will have more than a few chances to scare themselves silly this month. Between Alien: Isolation, The Evil Within, and Costume Quests 2, your All Hallows Eve can be a scary good time. What else is the Warp Zoned staff interested in during 2014’s tenth month? Read on to find out…

October is the month for scares and I can’t think of any game I’d rather be scared by than Alien: Isolation. I was always more of an Aliens guy when it came to the film series, but the game’s cramped locales and Creative Assembly’s “lo-fi sci-fi” aesthetic has me very interested in the latest video game adaptation of the Alien universe. I’ll also probably point my Wii U towards Bayonetta 2 as Platinum Games is always reliable when it comes to action spectacles. I actually skipped right over the first Bayonetta game (couldn’t get into the demo for some reason), but the sequel will rectify that mistake by including its predecessor in the package. Finally, my PS4 versus Xbox One dilemma might be solved by Insomniac’s Sunset Overdrive. The game’s kitchen sink approach may be off-putting to some, but I have to admit, blowing away monsters and mechs with an array of ridiculous weapons in a bright and colorful world is just my type of game.

Oh, and I’ll probably download Angry Birds Transformers on my iPod sometime this month because, why not?

Only one game exists for me this month, and that’s Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, a title I always say in Handsome Jack’s voice in my head. I am so unbelievably pumped for this game and I’m bummed that I have to wait half the month for it. I’ll spend the other half of the month finishing up Infamous: First Light, and maybe getting Pokemon Platinum out of the way. After that, it’s nothing but Blands, baby.

October, my favorite month. The time of year when it’s socially acceptable to decorate your front yard with all sorts of ghastly, gruesome scenes of death and malevolence. Sure, when you do the same thing in March, they call the cops on you, but in October, it’s OK. But whatever. Either way, this month will be dedicated to playing games with the lights off and the sound turned up.

I’ll start off this month with Super Smash Bros. For 3DS. I loved the demo, and I really can’t wait to play this version. I also want to get in touch with my inner trick-or-treater and play Costume Quest 2. I loved the decidedly old-school RPG feel of the first game, and I’m sure the follow-up will feature more of that Halloween-y goodness. Finally, I want to play The Evil Within. I must have played through Resident Evil 4 about six or seven times, and never got sick of it, so I know that this spiritual successor will be enjoyable as well.

Happy Happy Halloween (silver shamrock)!

…if you caught that reference, you’re awesome.
