Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain announced… Earth Defense Force 5 will be released in Japan on December 7

The Tokyo Game Show kicks off later this week, but publishers are already unveiling some of their upcoming titles ahead of Japan’s equivalent of the E3 Expo. D3 Publisher is one of the participants in this pre-show extravaganza, and they’ve unveiled fresh details about not one, but two, new games in the Earth Defense Force franchise.

You can learn more about both of them after the break.

First up is Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain, which is in development at Yuke’s. The spinoff promises a more serious take on the franchise’s signature alien invasion storyline, though the gameplay looks very familiar:

Developer Yuke’s and D3 revealed Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain at Sony’s pre-TGS 2017 press conference, and it looks both familiar and fresh.

As revealed in the game’s debut trailer, Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain will still task players with battling giant creatures — alien ants, giant robots and other beasts — in a manner that looks a bit more serious than the series’ traditional campy tone. Many of the game’s traditional third-person shooter elements, including mechanized suits, will return, though D3 calls Iron Rain “new territory” for the franchise.

Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain will be released for the PS4 in Japan in 2018. A North American release has yet to be announced.

Earth Defense Force 5 Release Date Announced For Japan [GameSpot]

Also unveiled today is a new trailer for Earth Defense Force 5, which is scheduled to launch for the PS4 in Japan on December 7. As with Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain, a North American release date wasn’t announced, but this new trailer looks like a lot of fun:

A new trailer was shown during the event, too, and you can watch it below. You know what you’re getting into: blasting aliens who are trying to take over the planet. Earth Defense Force 5 was announced during Sony’s TGS briefing one year ago this month.
