The Games of April 2018

After the end of a long Winter, things usually start bursting to life in April thanks to the fresh Spring air. This adage used to apply to the game release calendar too, but only a handful of new games will make their way to store shelves in April 2018. And an even smaller handful of titles will rise above the rest.

Nintendo will launch their latest experiment, the cardboard-powered Nintendo Labo kits, for the Switch this month. They’ll be joined by a new beginning for Kratos in Sony Santa Monica’s God of War, and the end for Kazuma Kiryu in Sega’s Yakuza 6: The Song of Life.

You can find out why the Warp Zoned staff is looking forward to these games, and view the release schedule for all of this month’s new games, after the break.

Yakuza 6: The Song of Life (April 17)
While the Yakuza franchise has a fair share of fans in North America, the adventures of Kazuma Kiryu are massively popular in Japan. Sega has gone to great lengths to recreate the sights and sounds of Japanese nightlife, as well as those found in the blood-soaked underworld commanded by the titular criminal syndicate. But Kazuma’s story will come to an end in Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, and this is your last chance to explore the unique open-world experience offered by the Yakuza franchise. – John Scalzo

God of War (April 20)
There’s really only one game I’m interested in this month, and it’s the next installment in the God of War series… God of War. I am excited about it, and I can’t tell if it’s in spite of how different it is from the original games… or because of it. Don’t get me wrong, I really loved the originals (especially the PSP games, and the third game). But I don’t have the usual dread that I have when I see how much the mechanics have changed in a game. I’m just eager and interested in seeing them take this lore in a new and exciting direction. – Nicole Kline

Nintendo Labo (April 20)
In an Easter month of slim pickings, I don’t think it’s a mistake that Nintendo is releasing their Nintendo Labo kits for the Switch. There’s still a lot of questions around this cardboard experiment… Is it a game? Or is it something more, much like the Switch itself? I’ll probably pick up both the Robot Kit and the Variety Kit because I love building Lego sets and Labo looks to tap directly into that love.

But kids are the main market for Labo, and having watched one of my friend’s kids spending hours building a huge cardboard castle, I think Nintendo might have another winner on their hands. – Andrew Rainnie
