Game publishers are launching just a handful of “new” games this month, but Switch owners should be pleased with a slew of big re-releases from Nintendo, Capcom, and Nicalis.
You might not agree with all our choices, but the next four weeks are going to be great if you’re looking forward to Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition, Mega Man Legacy Collection, Ikaruga, and many others. It’s almost a shame that Dark Souls Remastered‘s Switch launch was pushed out to the Summer, but at least PC, PS4, and Xbox One players will get to stay on theme.
You can find out exactly why the Warp Zoned staff is looking forward to these games, and view the release schedule for all of this month’s new games, after the break.
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (May 4)
I’m really looking forward to Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze on the Switch. I owned it on the Wii U, I owned it on the Wii U, but I only lazily attempted to play it until I reached a boss I could not beat and just gave up. I’ve been replaying the original Donkey Kong Country on my Super NES Classic and I forgot just how many secrets and collectibles there were. – Andrew Rainnie
Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition (May 18)
I’m also very excited about Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition on the Switch. Like Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, I owned it on the Wii U, but I never actually got around to playing it. I’m glad this Dynasty Warriors-style has been given a second chance on the Switch, and I really hope to pick it up and complete it this time. Especially because I don’t think a lot of people (including myself) quite got it. Battling on the go should be brilliant! – Andrew Rainnie
Mega Man Legacy Collection (May 22)
Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 (May 22)
Sure, I’ve played the originals. I even played the re-release on the PS2 and GameCube. And I also played the re-re-releases on the PlayStation 4. But now, I’m definitely going to pick up the re-re-re-release of Mega Man Legacy Collection and Mega Man Legacy Collection 2. Why? Because I just can’t get enough of the Blue Bomber. – Mike Ryan
PixelJunk Monsters 2 (May 25)
As many of you know, I’m a huge fan of Q-Games and their adorable PixelJunk series. If I had to choose one as my ultimate favorite… if you really made me choose… – I would have to say PixelJunk Monsters. So I’m beyond thrilled to get the adorable PixelJunk Monsters 2 coming out later this month! I don’t know what I find more incredulous – that they could make a game more adorable than the first one, or that they were able to keep it a secret until this year’s Game Developers Conference. But I know what I do believe, and that is the fact that I’ll be pouring lots of hours into this one, too! – Nicole Kline
Ikaruga (May 29)
Ikaruga is making its grand return to Nintendo platforms later this month and I couldn’t be happier. Nicalis and Treasure got together to give the vertically-scrolling shooter a fresh new re-release that includes a vertical screen option and multiple difficulty modes (especially helpful for those of us whose skills may have diminished in the last decade).
Thankfully, the game’s signature polarity switching mechanic remains intact, and I’m sure the muscle memory of quickly shifting the color of my ship’s lasers and shields will return… because I’m definitely buying Ikaruga for a third time. – John Scalzo
Just Shapes and Beats (May 31)
Just Shapes and Beats has been a long time coming (it first got on my radar all the way back in 2015), but it looks like Berzerk Studio’s multiplayer musical bullet hell will finally be released for the PC and Switch at the end of the month. I’ve only played a few levels, and listened to a small portion of the game’s soundtrack, but I’m looking forward to exploring the rest of Just Shapes and Beats in a few weeks. – John Scalzo
