The Games of August 2018

The Summer’s almost over, but game publishers have decided to fill these final school-free days with a steady stream of re-releases and a few side-scrollers that look very interesting.

We’re very excited for the console debut of Motion Twin’s Dead Cells, which looks to combine a retro-inspired look with roguelite elements and a MetroidVania style. Bread Machine will also try their hand at reimagining a popular genre on consoles, the party brawler, with Slam Land. Featuring a hand-drawn art style, Slam Land wants players to slam their friends to impress a mysterious Giant Blue Man.

Also this month, a few classic games will make their way to new locales, including Zeboyd’s Cosmic Star Heroine and Sega’s beloved Shenmue I & II. We may have missed them the first time around, but that’ll soon change.

You can find out exactly why the Warp Zoned staff is interested in these titles after the break, and take a gander at August’s full release schedule, which also includes WarioWare Gold, Madden NFL 19, Overcooked! 2, We Happy Few, The Walking Dead: The Final Season, and many more.

Dead Cells (August 7)
I have been so looking forward to the Switch release of the Dark Souls-esque 2D side-scroller Salt and Sanctuary (which launches August 2, just in case you were curious) that I almost overlooked another similar, yet altogether different title, Motion Twin’s Dead Cells. Although they both look similar in terms of gameplay, Dead Cells riffs on Hyper Light Drifter with a colourful palette and retro-style graphics. There are plenty of roguelite, MetroidVania-inspired, action-platformers out there, but Dead Cells’s bright graphics and slick animation promise that it will rise above the rest when its released later this month. Pre-ordered! – Andrew Rainnie

Slam Land (August 7)
What do you get when you combine the fisticuffs of a Smash-style party fighter with the hoop dreams of the basketball court? You get Slam Land from Bread Machine Games. Coming this month to the PC, PS4, and Switch, players will get the chance to compete in wildly colorful four-player battles to slam their friends into the center ring and “impress the Giant Blue Man.”

I’m just not sure I want to find out what happens if I fail… – John Scalzo

Cosmic Star Heroine (August 14)
Zeboyd Games originally released Cosmic Star Heroine for the PC and PS4 in April 2017, and now the developer is bringing their retro-futuristic RPG to the Switch in August. Featuring visuals and a battle system inspired by the SNES-era of RPGs, players will take control of intergalactic spy Alyssa L’Salle in Cosmic Star Heroine as she attempts to unravel a “dark conspiracy.” Because of Zeboyd’s strong track record (including Cthulhu Saves the World and Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 3 + 4), I’ve been looking forward to Cosmic Star Heroine for a long time… and now that it’s coming to the Switch I can finally play it. – John Scalzo

Shenmue I & II (August 21)
There’s a big chunk of video game history that I’m missing, and that currently includes the Shenmue series. So I guess it’s no surprise that I’m pretty excited about the Shenmue I & II re-release we’re finally getting later thus month! I don’t know much about the games other than what I see in memes, but I’m pretty excited that I’ll finally get the jokes! And also, you know, play some much-beloved games and correct one of my gaming blindspots. – Nicole Kline
