EA @ E3 11: Need For Speed: The Run takes you out of the car

That’s right. For the first time in the series, Need For Speed: The Run will have sequences when players actually exit the vehicle. These segments complement the characteristic chase sequences of the series well, as they look mostly like action-packed cutscenes where quick time events determine whether or not you get away safely (and into another car). At EA’s press conference, a live demonstration showed the player getting out during a crash, running through stairwells and across buildings before commandeering a police vehicle. Later on the player had to kick his way out of the car’s window in order to escape an oncoming train.

In order to bring the action to life, The Run will also be utilizing DICE’s Frostbite 2.0 engine, the powerhouse currently running Battlefield 3‘s impressive visuals. Expect more info on DICE’s latest military shooter as EA’s press conference continues.

MS @ E3 11: Kinect Fun Labs launches today with new features

Game designer and Kinect head honcho Kudo Tsunoda just revealed Kinect Fun Labs at Microsoft’s Press conference, a permanent addition to the Xbox Dashboard that brings an array of new ways to interact with your Xbox 360 Kinect. One feature shown off as body scanning, which instantly created an avatar out of a person’s real features. Second was finger tracking, which the presenter used to take a 3D picture of himself, then draw lighting effects both in front of and behind his image, which he could then view in 3D. Finally, they showed off one of Kinect’s most talked about features since launch – object scanning. The presenter was able to scan a plush toy onto the screen with Kinect, then jump around and lean from side to side as a fully animated version of that object.

It’s all pretty interesting and hopefully will lead to more innovative features on the platform. Kinect Fun Labs is available today, right now, on Xbox Live.

Star Trek game announced, details at E3

Since the success of J.J. Abrams’ take on Star Trek, there’s been a couple game outings utilizing the license, but nothing like this.

Paramount Digital Entertainment has announced the co-op, action adventure Star Trek, featuring an original, stand-alone story. God of War writer and BAFTA award winner Marianne Krawczyk has teamed up with Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman, writers and producers of the current Star Trek films, to tell a new story of Spock and Kirk, working together “to stop a legendary enemy race bent on conquering the galaxy.” The game is under development at Digital Extremes, known for the Unreal series and the upcoming The Darkness II, with an offering that “challenges the boundaries of co-op gameplay.”

With bold claims and enticing promises, Star Trek will release on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 in Summer 2012. Paramount will unveil more details about the game at next week’s E3 Expo.

David O. Russell leaves Uncharted movie

In a development sure to please many gamers, David O. Russell has stepped away from helming the upcoming film adaptation of the Uncharted series. Variety reports that while Russell is leaving his writing and directorial duties due to creative differences, the split is amicable. Sony is expected to look for a new writer and director to take on the project.

Russell said a lot of things about the project that made many gamers worry, from Mark Wahlberg starring as Drake, to the film focusing on Drake’s family, reimagined as a secret society of international art police. Whoever leads this thing, let’s just hope it’s somehow related to the game series.

UPDATE: Collider.com is reporting that Sony fired Russell from the project because his story ideas strayed too far from the game. Way to go Sony!

Leaked Final Fantasy Type-0 trailer reveals nearly 20 minutes of gameplay

It’s been a while since we heard any news on Final Fantasy Type-0, since it was renamed from Final Fantasy Agito XIII with a very brief debut trailer. The scarcity of knowledge about what it will actually look like can end now, with nearly twenty minutes of in-game footage shown in the above video. Menus, town exploration, and combat are all seen, as well as some developer commentary, if you understand Japanese. It looks a lot like the action gameplay of Tetsuya Nomura’s Kingdom Hearts and Dissidia games, but hopefully this will bring more RPG flavor to original PSP Final Fantasy titles.
