3DS launch event coming to New York this Saturday March 26
Nintendo is heading to New York this weekend to celebrate the launch of the first gaming-dedicated, glasses-less 3D handheld device, the Nintendo 3DS. The extravaganza will take place at noon at Union Square Park, with giveaways, live music from the HOTcakes, and a special appearance by Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. At 9pm customers can line up at the Best Buy at Union Square to be the first in line to purchase the 3DS, with the first 300 lucky buyers getting a free carrying case.
It’s an exciting time for Nintendo and the industry in general. If you’re in the New York area, this is definitely worth checking out.
SOCOM 4 multiplayer beta opens for PlayStation Plus users today
It’s on. While many of us will be knee deep in Crysis 2, more tactical shooter fans, third person enthusiasts, and PlayStation elitists will be overcome with joy to play the multiplayer beta for SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy Seals. PlayStation Plus subscribers get a little value added today when the PlayStation Store updates with the download.
The beta includes all four game modes on two maps, in both standard and classic matchmaking. Plus subscribers will be joining the lucky players who got to participate in the private beta, where a few custom types were also available. Hopefully we’ll get to play those, too.
The beta for Killzone 3 purchasers begins next week, followed by an open beta for all PSN users the week after that, and the full version of SOCOM 4 releases for the PlayStation 3 on April 19.
Sony outlines PlayStation 3 2011 3D strategy in awesomely long graphic
Click the graphic to the left. Seriously, do it. There, you’ll find a list of some of the bigger experiences coming in 3D to the PlayStation 3 throughout the year, as well as interesting statistics. Did you know 20% of the downloads for the Killzone 3 single player demo were in 3D? Either there’s more 3DTV’s out there than we thought or only technophiles are into Killzone.
The other, and my personal favorite stat, was how in one week alone, over 83,000 technopervs downloaded Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 2011: The 3-D Experience Exclusive Sneak Peek. That’s a lot of sticky DualShocks.
Sony is billing 2011 as The Year of 3D on the PlayStation 3 System. That’s a far cry from The Year of the PS3, but I suppose it’ll do.
EA teases us with ‘First Look’ at Madden NFL 12
The show must go on. Lockouts can’t stop EA’s Madden NFL series as the latest entry is set to be released under every platform under the sun this August as usual. Today we get the first teaser trailer for Madden NFL 12, with those titillating menus, classic gameplay, and that sweet HD grass you just want to rip up and smell.
ANYWAY, don’t forget you can win your very own copy of Madden NFL 12 by making your own bracket for the cover athlete, and we strongly suggest joining the Warp Zoned group in EA’s bracket challenge.

Crysis 2 launch trailer urges you to be the weapon, save New York
Amidst media fanboyism and controversial comparisons, Crysis 2 is indeed out today for PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. Accompanying the game’s release is a launch trailer, sporting some of the dramatic moments of the story, praise from publications, and even some gameplay, probably running smoother than most of us will actually experience. Personally, I’m looking forward to tearing open the game tonight myself and getting lost in the multiplayer, hopefully getting a full review out by the end of the week.
Mass Effect universe expanding with more comics later this year
If you enjoyed last year’s run of Dark Horse’s adaptation on Bioware’s Mass Effect series, or their work to recap the original game on the PS3 version of Mass Effect 2 (which we thought worked), you’re getting more crossover goodness in 2011. On a panel last Friday about Video Game Comics, Dark Horse representative Jeremy Atkins revealed that a new series is indeed in the works, due out later this year. They also confirmed that a comic series for Star Wars: The Old Republic is in the works, and writers from Bioware will be the ones penning the story.
The increasingly popular journey from video games to comics has been a rough one in the last few years, but from what I’ve gathered the Mass Effect crossover was a nice exception to the disappointing rule. Hopefully we won’t be let down and the new comics will pleasantly supplement the universe, along with Mass Effect 3 when it hits PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 this holiday season.
Stacking DLC coming early next month
Stacking is one of our favorite digital titles to have kicked off 2011, so we’re understandably delighted to learn that the game will be getting a DLC add-on entitled The Lost Hobo King. This episode sees Charlie helping his artistically-inclined hobo friend Levi and his Uncle Rufus find the fragmented pieces of the lost crown so that Rufus may ascend to the throne of Hobo. The all new environment and story come with new challenges, hi-jinks, over fifteen new dolls, and trophies/achievements. No word on pricing or specific dating, but the pack will come to the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade in early April.
That’s pretty soon, so if you haven’t checked out Stacking yet, be sure to get the demo or read our review linked above.
