5 Indie Games for PS4 to Spend Your Watch Dogs Money On

5indiegames-header

Gamers, please accept my apology. I didn’t mean to; it was a complete mistake. I take all the blame, and I hope that one day you will be able to find it in your heart to forgive me.

I pre-ordered Watch Dogs a few days ago.

I know, I know. If only I hadn’t pre-ordered the game, I wouldn’t have jinxed the whole thing, and the game never would have been delayed. Believe me; I’m just as devastated as you. Now my PS4 lineup will be without the title that I was looking forward to most. But hey – I don’t like to dwell on the past. I’m a half-full kind of guy. So I wiped my tears and got to searching for the next great next-gen game. And you know what I found? It looks like some of the best games won’t be coming from hundred-developer teams and multi-million dollar budgets. My friends, this generation is all about the indies.

While doing my research on what PS4 launch game to get to while I wait for Watch Dogs, I was a bit let down. Sure, there are some good choices, like Call of Duty: Ghosts and Killzone: Shadow Fall, but those didn’t really jump out at me. I’m already getting Knack, and I don’t have too deep an interest in sports or racing games. It was only when I started perusing the downloadable titles that I really started to get excited. And you should too. So here’s just a few upcoming PS4 independent games to use that Watch Dogs money on. (more…)

Creative gamers everywhere, rejoice! Community Manager Mike Lescault has announced on Reddit that Project Spark, Microsoft’s upcoming free-to-play video game in which you make other video games, will not require an Xbox Live Gold Subscription in order to take advantage of its game-creation goodness.

This comes as great news to those who only carry Live Free status, or, like myself, have family members on the same system without a Gold membership. A beta for Project Spark is set to hit the Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Windows 8 is set to hit some time in January.

Square Enix will release Dragon Quest 1-8 on mobile devices in Japan

dragonquest-header

In news that seems like it should have happened years ago, Square Enix has announced (translated by Touch Arcade) that they plan to re-release all eight Dragon Quest titles in Japan for iOS and Android devices. A ninth game, Dragon Quest Monsters, is also in the works for mobile devices. As you may have guessed, at this time only a Japanese release has been confirmed. No word on whether or not the classics will hit shores outside of Japan, but here’s hoping. I loved the original Dragon Warrior, and to have it on the go?

Yes, please.

John Carpenter loves games and wants to make his own someday

johncarpenterHow can you not love John Carpenter? The man has made some of the greatest movies of all-time. And now, we find out that he’s a gamer? How could it get any better?

After reading Carpenter’s latest tweet singing the praises of Rayman Legends, Giant Bomb fired off a few questions through email to discuss his passion for video games. Some interesting facts about the director were learned (he had a voice cameo in 2002’s The Thing video game, for example), and he expressed his desire to make his own original game. Carpenter last worked in the game industry with Day 1 Studios on the the story and narration to FEAR 3.

OK developers, this is your chance. If John freaking Carpenter says he wants to create a video game, it’s time to start making some phone calls.

State of Decay: Breakdown expansion will offer even more challenge soon

stateofdecay-header

OK, show of hands: who loves throwing controllers? Well, controller-throwing friends, you’ll be happy to hear that the upcoming downloadable content for Xbox Live Arcade zombiefest State of Decay will make you want to purchase an insurance policy on your hardware. State of Decay: Breakdown will ramp up the difficulty, dramatically changing the game as you play. In the update, as you play through the game, the zombies get tougher, you get weaker, and supplies become more scarce, making it feel like a true fight for survival. But based on the developers’ comments, it seems to go beyond challenging. It’s almost sadistic. And I’m sure I’ll love every minute of it.

No release date was given for State of Decay: Breakdown, so stay tuned to Warp Zoned for more info as it becomes available.

New details about The Order: 1886 revealed in Game Informer

theorder1886-gi

I have to admit, when I first saw the trailer for The Order: 1886 back at E3, I was sure it was going to be Left 4 Dead meets Castlevania. Looks like I was a bit off.

This month, Game Informer‘s cover story blows the lid off the mysterious PlayStation 4 title, giving us a wealth of information on story, setting, and gameplay mechanics. The game is said to be a third-person action title, with some amazing visuals. Weaponry blends medieval and science fiction – lightning pistols, for example – and is said to be quite stunning.

The PS4 exclusive is set to hit stores some time in 2014.
