Nexuiz Review: Speed Kills
Tired of bunny-hopping, rocket launcher kiddies in Halo, sawed-off shotgun wall huggers in Gears of War, or cowardly campers in Call of Duty? Then maybe you should consider Nexuiz, an updated return to the old school arena shooter. (more…)
Iron Brigade: Rise of the Martian Bear Review: Mustaches and Mechs and Bears, Oh My!
You’ve got to love Double Fine. Combining customizable mech combat with tower defense and a hilariously quirky sense of humor, Trenched was an absolute delight when it was released in June 2011. Now known as Iron Brigade thanks to a European trademark issue, the game had you battling the evil and very mustachioed Vlad in an alternate 1940s setting. It was silly fun, but with great gameplay that could challenge even the most hardcore strategy player.
About the only criticism was that the game was a little short, leaving gamers wanting more. But fear not, because Double Fine has just given us exactly that: more action, more weapons, more, uh, bears on Mars. Because, well, who doesn’t want that? (more…)
Gears of War 3 Review: An Epic and Enjoyably Violent Conclusion
Awesome. That’s all you need to know about Gears of War 3, the final chapter of the groundbreaking, chainsaw-loving trilogy. This is not to say Epic Games won’t make more – after all, they’ve sold over three million copies in the first week, so it’s pretty much a no-brainer that the franchise will continue. Rather, it is only Marcus Fenix’s story that has come to a close – and wow, what an epic, thrilling, and enjoyably violent conclusion it is. (more…)
Study Finds Video Game Competition, Not Violence, Can Lead To Aggression
A new study at Ontario’s Brock University has turned the old adage, “playing violent video games causes violence,” on its head. A paper published in the American Psychological Association’s journal Psychology of Violence entitled, “The Effect of Video Game Competition and Violence on Aggressive Behavior: Which Characteristic Has the Greatest Influence,” concluded that it was the competitive nature of a video game that led to aggressive behavior, and not the level of violence.
Researchers Paul Adachi and Teena Willoughby conducted two experiments. The first involved 42 test subjects playing either the violent action game Conan or the nonviolent racing game Fuel. Participants rated the games similar on competitiveness, difficulty, and pace of action, so the only difference was the level of violence. Test subjects’ post-gaming aggressiveness was measured by which of four hot sauces they would serve to another participant – the hotter the sauce, the more aggressive they were. (Yes, hot sauce – remember, they’re Canadians, so giving the test subjects guns, bazookas or nukes is a wee bit frowned upon.)
The researchers found no difference in aggressiveness between the two groups of gamers. They write, “The results suggest that the violent content alone was not sufficient to produce elevations in aggressive behavior compared with a nonviolent video game.” (more…)
Toy Soldiers: Cold War Review: You Want a War? You Got a War!
Seattle-based Signal Studios delighted gamers last year with their debut title Toy Soldiers, a tower defense game that oozed style as you fulfilled your childhood fantasies of blowing the crap out of little plastic soldiers and tanks. Now they’re back with a sequel, which moves the conflict from World War I to the good ol’ days of the Cold War – because, well, who doesn’t enjoy blasting commie toys to smithereens? (more…)
Gears of War 3 Beta Survival Guide
I love Gears of War multiplayer: great action, eye-popping graphics, over-the-top violence, and an overall fun experience. The only problem is I suck at it. A lot. As in turbo-charged Hoover suckage. My kill/death ratio is embarrassingly low, and I sometimes feel like I spend more time waiting to respawn than actually playing the game.
So if you’re a casual player or brand new to the series and are getting your butt handed to you in the beta, I feel your pain. The franchise has attracted a seriously hardcore following and I am constantly amazed (and sometimes frustrated) by how good the players are. It can get bad enough to potentially turn off the average or casual player, which is a shame because they will miss out on a fantastic multiplayer shooter.
However, if you’re one of those people, don’t despair. Take it from me: a little time, patience and smarts will have you holding your own even against the toughest opponents. Hopefully this guide will help you enjoy all the fun the beta has to offer. No, you still may not get the most kills, but at least you won’t feel like cannon fodder either. (more…)
Gears of War 3 Beta Impressions: New Features, Classic Chainsaws
Gears of War fans were naturally upset when the upcoming final chapter of Marcus Fenix’s trilogy was delayed for marketing purposes, but that anger quickly turned into excitement when Epic announced that it would run a public multiplayer beta. While Epic is using the beta to gather valuable technical data to tweak and refine the game, players are just happy for an advanced opportunity to chainsaw their buddies into bloody giblets. (more…)
