The PAXpocalypse List: The Best of PAX Prime 2013
This year’s PAX Prime was one of the best gaming experiences I’ve ever had. And even with four days, I still didn’t get a chance to play everything – or even see everything. Lines were long, crowds were huge, and once I got started in on a good game, I wanted to play it as much as I could. We were originally only going to award ten games, but by Monday, we couldn’t narrow it down, so we ended up adding in two more. Here is the PAXpocalypse List for PAX Prime 2013 – the twelve games we’d love to be stranded with if this little convention in Seattle was the end of the world. And they’re in alphabetical order… because that’s how it’s done when you can’t pick favorites. (more…)
The Games of September 2013
The dog days are over and the Fall gaming avalanche is here. A few key titles dominate the September release schedule (Grand Theft Auto V and Diablo III, mostly) but there’s a ton of quirkier fare out there for those who are willing to look for it. And you can tell that it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas with all the re-releases of old favorites that dot the schedule. What is the Warp Zoned staff most excited for in September? Hit the jump and find out. (more…)
Warpback: What We Played in August 2013
The dog days are over and the Fall gaming avalanche is here. Before we dive in to September and two new consoles, the Warp Zoned staff attempted to whittle down their backlogs for one last month. Were we successful? Sure. But there’s always a new game to add to the backlog. (more…)
5 Games That Failed Miserably Despite Themselves
Over the long course of gaming history, there have been a lot of bad games; titles like Too Human and E.T. for the Atari 2600 have had notoriously negative receptions and connotations over the years. But bad games are easy to find, especially in today’s age. With platforms like Steam and programs like Kickstarter, ambitious games that would otherwise never have seen the light of day are being released on a regular basis. And for every great indie project like Limbo and Braid, there are literally hundreds of indie games that many of us have never played because they just don’t measure up. However, this list isn’t just going to be covering bad games, because plenty of games fail. Games that fail miserably are games that had nothing but potential going into their development, either because of the companies behind them or the names associated with them, games that would seemingly have to literally try to fail. Here are five games that failed miserably despite themselves. (more…)
Interview: Dakko Dakko’s Dan Croucher Discusses Scram Kitty and His Buddy On Rails
Hidden amongst the big games announced during Nintendo’s E3 2013 Nintendo Direct video presentation were some gorgeous looking indie titles. One that really shone bright during its brief showing was Scram Kitty and His Buddy On Rails, a top-down, on-rails (but not in that way) shooter/platformer hybrid. It is currently being developed by Welsh studio Dakko Dakko, best known for their previous PSN Mini hit Floating Cloud God Saves the Pilgrims. Scram Kitty’s Producer, Dan Croucher, was kind enough to answer some questions about tax breaks, octopus hats, and favourite gaming titles. (more…)

Warpback: What We Played in July 2013
We here at Warp Zoned spent July sweating and gaming, as all good little geeks do in the summer! Most of us spent the time digging into our backlogs and catching up on old games (and sometimes even older games). Read on to see what we’ve been playing for the last 31 days! (more…)
Kickstart This! The Organic Monochrome Augmented Reality Edition
Summer is in full swing, like a party at Jay Gatsby’s house. While we are currently in the middle of a month of suffering thanks to a gaming drought, there’s always new opportunities on Kickstarter. This month, choose whether to join Team Meat or Team Cheese in Organic Panic, explore the chilling dystopia of Monochroma, or get your steampunk on in turn-based strategy Tooth and Cog.
Taking a slight detour from video games themselves, there is also the augmented reality board game Darkling Plain, a new open-source programmable handheld console in the FEZ Game-O, and finally, Double Jump, a novel about a man who finds himself in a world governed by video game logic.
Let’s jump right in! (more…)
