Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception Beta Impressions: I Miss Being Among Thieves
The beta for Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception has come and gone, with a slew of new features, weapons, maps, and characters. The concept of multiplayer in the Uncharted series started in 2009 with Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and it’s clear that Naughty Dog has come a long way since then. But has all of their experience and hard work resulted in an improvement? Or is this series going to end up as another name on a long list of generic shooters? (more…)
Catherine Hands-On Preview: Move Over, Freddy – There’s A New Nightmare in Town
Japanese company Atlus is no stranger to both developing and publishing unusual games – they are, after all, the creators of the Persona series. Their latest game, Catherine, has been dubbed an infidelity simulator, and fits right into their niche of the weird and wonderful. Even after everything we’ve written about Catherine, I still wasn’t sure what to expect from the demo. I tried not to have high expectations, but even as elevated as they were, I was definitely not disappointed with what the demo had to offer. (more…)
Sonic Generations Hands-On Preview: The Last 20 Years Has Been a Loop-the-Loop

Since then, the rights to the franchise have bounced from publisher to publisher, finally landing on Square Enix’s doorstep. The Japanese megapublisher enlisted Obsidian Entertainment to developer Dungeon Siege III and made their mission for the game very clear: to introduce the series to a console audience while crafting an awesome action RPG experience. Gears of War fans were naturally upset when the upcoming final chapter of Marcus Fenix’s trilogy was delayed for marketing purposes, but that anger quickly turned into excitement when Epic announced that it would run a public multiplayer beta. While Epic is using the beta to gather valuable technical data to tweak and refine the game, players are just happy for an advanced opportunity to chainsaw their buddies into bloody giblets. (more…)
Interview: Zipper’s Kevin Schmitt Talks SOCOM 4 Multiplayer
At PAX East 2011, Senior Editor Nicole Kline and I got to have a lengthy chat with Kevin Schmitt, Lead Multiplayer Designer for SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy Seals. We got to talk extensively about the multiplayer, from game modes to progression paths, and how the buddy system plays a large role in the game. We also got some interesting insights from Schmitt, including what it’s like to be a lead designer on his first game at Zipper and the challenges and benefits of dealing with a long established fan base, whom he affectionately refers to as free labor. Playing the game got me really excited for its release and talking with Schmitt only compounded it. Hit the jump for the full interview on one of the most anticipated games of April. (more…)
