God of War: Ascension Beta Impressions: Eviscerating Your Expectations

godofwarascension-header

The God of War: Ascension multiplayer beta launched this Tuesday for PlayStation Plus members, and, as a member and a person who’s played the previous God of War games extensively, I felt I had an obligation to download it. I was skeptical about the idea of multiplayer in a God of War game, mainly because the entire concept behind the franchise was the struggle of just one man: Kratos. He has created his own mythology, becoming a fixture in the Sony gaming world. So how could they make multiplayer in a game that was so Kratos-centric? My healthy skepticism was almost instantly destroyed when I began playing the beta. Yes, it’s actually that much fun. (more…)

Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch Hands-On Preview: Get Ready For a Beautiful Adventure

There are many Japanese games I get excited about, even if they never end up coming here. But there’s one that I’ve been especially excited to see hit these shores for a very, very long time. I was pleased to finally be able to check out a demo – anything is better than nothing! And I can confirm that the demo for Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is just as amazing as all of those words make it sound. (more…)

Harry Potter For Kinect Hands-On Preview: Harry Potter and the Motion-Controlled Demo

Not to be hindered by such obstacles as, oh, the entire series ending, the Harry Potter video game franchise will continue when Harry Potter For Kinect releases on October 9th. At first glance, this title may seem like just another licensed minigame rush job, with little appeal to anyone other than kids and diehard Potter fans. But much like the results of a fresh mixture of Polyjuice Potion, looks can be deceiving. (more…)

Sleeping Dogs: Taking It For a Walk With Producer Dan Sochan

Sleeping Dogs was playable at PAX East this year, and as we were playing, we got a chance to talk with Dan Sochan, a Producer at developer United Front Games. Sochan was friendly and informative, and gave us tidbits about the game as we took protagonist Wei Shen out and smashed some enemies into anything we could on the streets of Hong Kong. Read on for more about this amazing upcoming game. (more…)

Diablo III Beta Impressions: Your Idle Hands Will Soon Belong to Diablo

For those of us who have been pouting and kicking dirt around, complaining about how Diablo III looked too much like World of Warcraft, or how it was taking oh so long to have a release date, I’ve got some news for you. It’s coming, and it’s spectacular. From what I saw in the beta (that ended May 1) – a beta that comprised roughly 3% of the game, if you can believe what you read on the Internet – I can safely say that I’m about to lose a chunk of my life in the next few weeks. Forget blacking out from drinking: I’m about to go on a full Diablo III binge. (more…)

Penny Arcade’s On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 3 Hands-On Preview: Resurrecting a Zombie in More Ways Than One

When the third episode of Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness was canceled in 2010, I have to admit, I was a bit shocked. The first two games in the series provided plenty of RPG thrills and all the Penny Arcade-style humor I could ever ask for.

I was equally shocked when the RPG series was reborn under the slightly less laborious title, Penny Arcade’s On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 3. Now in the hands of Zeboyd Games, an indie development house known for their love of 16-bit RPGs, the game was playable for the first time at last month’s PAX East expo. And play it I did. (more…)

Double Dragon: Neon Interview: Mixing It Up With Majesco’s Pete Rosky

A surefire way to build buzz for your retro-tinged throwback game is to announce that it’ll be playable on the PAX show floor just a few hours before the doors open. It worked for Duke Nukem Forever at PAX Prime 2010 and it worked for Double Dragon: Neon, which made its debut at this year’s PAX East.

After getting some hands-on time with the game, we were able to sit down with Pete Rosky, an Assistant Product Manager at Majesco, the game’s publisher. During our short chat, we talked about the genesis of the game, weapons, enemies, and a certain actress who everyone agrees is the boss. (more…)

Double Dragon: Neon Hands-On Preview: WayForward Loves the 80s

Pretend it’s 1987 and you’re all hopped up on Nerds, Airheads, and Pop Rocks. The bright colors of the candy (and the sugar, always remember the sugar) has started to seep into your brain as you approach a new game in your favorite arcade: Double Dragon. It’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen. There are street punks and… a chick with a whip and… whoa, does that guy have a knife? Now I have the knife! As the candy does its thing, it’s now 2012 and the neon has disappeared from the world, but it remains in Double Dragon: Neon, a downloadable tribute to the original arcade game that’ll be available this Summer. (more…)
