Zombie Driver HD Review: Taxicab Concussions
If there’s one constant in video games, it’s zombies. Well, zombies and explosive barrels. OK – zombies, explosive barrels, and Quick Time Events. Regardless, a lot of action games these days usually contain one or more of the above. Case in point: Zombie Driver HD, out now on Steam and Xbox Live Arcade. While it may not include QTEs or barrels, Zombie Driver HD does supply you with a never-ending horde of the living dead. Your only weapon against the ghouls? A garage full of badass, weapon-equipped vehicles designed to make the undead… well… dead. (more…)
Tokyo Jungle Review: A Story of a Man and His Dog (Without the Man)
What happens to man’s best friend when man doesn’t exist? That’s the big question established in the refreshingly original premise of Tokyo Jungle, a game which sees the human race extinct, domesticated pets running feral and ferocious zoo animals ruling the streets of Tokyo, all facing a savage battle for survival. (more…)
Wreck-It Ralph Review: The Movie You’ve Been Waiting For
If you’re anything like me, you were smitten with Wreck-It Ralph when you saw its trailer for the first time. A Disney movie about a fictional video game, featuring characters from beloved games of our youth, made in an adorable style, with an amazing cast of voices? It was like a dream come true. Each additional trailer and a fantastic series of posters hyped me up more and more, and gave me butterflies in my stomach. And, as I found out in a special early screening of the movie, gaming has gone so mainstream that gamers are in for an awesome treat with Wreck-It Ralph. (more…)
Borderlands 2 Review: There’s No Place Like Pandora
When Borderlands came out in 2009, it blended together the perfect mix of role-playing elements with first-person shooter fare. Affectionately referred to as an FPSRPG, the game’s Diablo-style loot system had players upgrading their guns and shields while working their way up levels and through skill trees. Each of the four characters – Brick the Berserker, Lilith the Siren, Mordecai the Hunter, and Roland the Soldier – were enjoyable in their own way, adding some flavor to the somewhat utilitarian story. Gearbox Studios bragged that Borderlands 2 was going to take everything about the first game and made it bigger – bigger characters, deeper story, better loot. Do these ambitious changes work in the sequel? (more…)
Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Review: The Buddy System Scuffle
We are currently in the midst of a fighting game renaissance. From the arcade cabinets in the days of yore, to the couches of the 1990s, and finally to the heated tournaments today, the genre has evolved from a casual experience to an almost chess-like battle of the intellects. Dedicated fighters spend months perfecting their move sets and combos, and study their opponents’ battles to look for any hints of weaknesses. Tournaments such as EVO are held every year, where the best players take home thousands of dollars in cash and prizes. It’s become a full-blown extravaganza.
Learning a fighting game nowadays take time and persistence. Sure, you can button-mash and win a few fights here and there; but in order to be the best, you need to learn the intricacies. One must have a detailed knowledge of hit boxes, cancels, and the like in order to get the most out of your character. This is where Tekken Tag Tournament 2 excels: not just as a fighting game, but as a game worthy of your time and commitment. Because the first time you successfully pull off a combo into a bound into a tag assault into another combo, you’ll earn yourself a well-deserved feeling of satisfaction.
And that’s just a fraction of what this game offers. (more…)
Bad Piggies Review: The Pigs Shall Rise Again; or, Gone with the Swine
Even though the concept of Angry Birds made me uncomfortable at first – trying to hurt or injure pigs (who I like in real life) with birds (who I despise in real life) didn’t sound like fun – after this game, I definitely want to shoot birds, or anything, at the pigs.
Bad Piggies is a new game from Finnish Rovio Entertainment, the makers of Angry Birds (Angry Birds, Angry Birds Space, Angry Birds Seasons, Angry Birds Rio, Angry Birds Magic, Angry Birds Southern Murder Mystery… okay that last one was to see if you were paying attention). These are based on the (presumably) centuries-old battle between hog and air-rat, and which I like to pretend is for world domination instead of bird eggs… it’s more interesting that way. This time, however, you’re playing as the pigs, and those petulant swine have a score to settle. (more…)
Kirby’s Dream Collection Review: The Collection of Your Dreams?
The pinkest, puffiest, suckiest, and blowiest gaming icon is finally celebrating his 20th birthday. Kirby’s Dream Collection brings together the first six games in the series, from the classic Game Boy titles up to Kirby 64. Kirby is one of gaming’s most recognizable icons – and he’s a platforming character from the company that’s arguably the king of platformers. Have the Kirby games withstood the test of time? And is this a fitting celebration for the powerhouse of pink? (more…)
Fire Pro Wrestling Review: “Royal” Rumble or Wrestle “Meh”nia?
I feel bad for wrestling games; I truly do. Don’t get me wrong – I don’t have any preconceived notions of the genre. In fact, I enjoy it very much. I loved playing Pro Wrestling back on the NES (Starman FTW!). WWF Raw and Wrestlemania: The Arcade Game were also two of my favorites. The reason I pity wrestling games is due to WWF No Mercy. The game is over a decade old, but it was such an amazing title that every wrestling game that followed was immediately judged against No Mercy’s ridiculously high bar. While there have been some great wrestling games since 2001, only a select few were deemed good enough to be favorably compared to the N64 classic. (more…)
