Lollipop Chainsaw Review: Parting a Zombie’s Head From Its Body is Such Sweet Sorrow

Lollipop Chainsaw has been surrounded by a whirring tornado of hype ever since it was announced last year. The combination of Suda51’s twisted sensibilities and a minimally dressed cheerleader beheading zombies with a chainsaw destroyed the Internet’s collective mind. Now that it’s finally here, there’s no way the adventures of Juliet Starling and her bodyless boyfriend Nick could ever live up to all that hype. But what we got instead is an entertaining new entry in the “hack and slash” canon that is actually a sweet story of love and family.

I swear I’m not making that up. (more…)

Diablo III Review: Welcome Back to Tristram

It was a long time coming, but the mythical day finally arrived: Diablo III was released on May 15 to much fanfare. Over the ensuing weeks, I’ve poured less time than I wanted to into the game, deterred by my inability to sign into the servers and play the game. You must be online at all times and signed into Battle.net in order to play, so when servers crash, even your solo campaign is brought to a grinding halt. In spite of the constant server maintenance, annoying lag, and abrupt changes made to gameplay, I still had plenty of fun. But the question remains: was Diablo III worth the long wait? (more…)

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition Review: The Journal of a Minecraft Adventurer

Minecraft is a phenomenon that had passed me by. Mojang’s sandbox world sounded interesting, but I was never sure what to make of it. However, when Microsoft announced plans to bring Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition to the Xbox Live Arcade, I decided to finally give it a shot. But it wasn’t I who wrote the following review. It’s actually a journal that belongs to an unnamed adventurer who just so happens to look just like me. (more…)

Max Payne 3 Review: Another One of These, and Make it Strong

So here I am, reviewing Max Payne 3, and I wonder: was it worth it? Was playing this game worth the frustration, crashes, audio bugs, and insane loading times just to get to the main screen so that I could go through more loading times to get into the game? As I sit here with my head in my hands between sentences, I wonder: How did I get here?

Wavy Lines… Wavy Lines… Wavy Lines… Wavy Lines… Wavy Lines…

(You know, those lines that tell you we’re going back in time, because I thought it would be a good idea to model my review on the opening scene of the game I’m reviewing.) (more…)

Resident Evil Revelations Review: Revel in This Iteration

Set between Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5, Resident Evil Revelations is a portable thrill-ride that combines a lot of elements from the series. This the second Resident Evil game to hit the 3DS and is a more robust experience than Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D. Players take control of Jill Valentine and a host of other characters to explore a derelict cruise shp in search of the missing Chris Redfield and his partner. Is the adventure worth the price of admission? Or will it make players want to abandon ship? (more…)

Awesomenauts Review: Get Ready to Launch Fun into Space!

Awesomenauts is a colorful and competitive arena game with some light platforming that feels like you’re in an 80s cartoon. Set in the year 3587, it’s got aliens, humans, and, of course, lots of robots. You play as the Awesomenauts, who are touted as the most powerful mercenaries in the whole universe. It’s a ragtag group, but when the goal is galactic conquest, you need the best of the best. While this game isn’t necessarily the best of the best, playing as the Awesomenauts can be a whole lot of fun. (more…)

Birds of Steel Review: A Quick Flight Over World War II

Before playing it, I was subconsciously convinced that Konami’s Birds of Steel was an airborne rendition of Konami’s classic Nintendo hockey game, Blades of Steel. After starting the game, and realizing that no one was wearing ice skates or hitting hockey pucks, I was a bit disappointed. But alas, this review is not for Blades of Steel, it’s for Birds of Steel – the half-flight-sim, half-aerial-combat title which is the spiritual cousin to IL-2 Sturmovik, and was created by the same development team at Gaijin Entertainment. (more…)
