Breakout Boost Review: Boost Breaks Bricks Brilliantly

Call it Breakout. Call it Arkanoid. Call it Brickles. Whatever title you use, everyone is familiar with the “bricks-and-balls” genre.

A small paddle is located at the bottom of the screen while a large wall of bricks is located at the top. Using the paddle, players must knock the ball back into the wall until all the bricks are destroyed. It’s such a simple design that the genre is often referred to as “one-player Pong.” (more…)

Catball Eats It All Review: A Purr-fect Game on the Go

The iOS marketplace is full of crazy games, and I haven’t even come close to scratching the surface. But there’s one game I’ve discovered that fulfills almost every single thing I love about video games: it’s fun, it’s cute, it’s addictive, it’s smooth, and most of all, it works. That game is called Catball Eats it All, and it’s available for the iPad and iPod Touch. Imagine if you married Katamari with LocoRoco and plopped it down on the iPad. That’s the adorable union you’ve got with Catball. (more…)

The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection Review: Revisiting Perfection

The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection is something many gamers have anticipated for a long time. Hardcore fans of the series and those who never had a chance to play these two masterpieces were equally excited at the opportunity to play the games remastered and in high definition. The highly awaited Blu-ray disc also includes some bonus features, including the ability to play the game in full stereoscopic 3D. It’s a perfect package, with enough here to fill the appetite of nearly any gamer. (more…)

Borderlands: The Fallen Review: Spend Some More Time on Sunny Pandora

John Shirley – whose name you might remember from my scathing review of the BioShock novel – is at it again, this time with a novel entitled Borderlands: The Fallen. As you can guess, it’s a novel based on Pandora in the world of Borderlands. It follows Roland, the Soldier, on a mission (see what I did there?) to find an alien ship. After spending several hundred pages with Shirley, I was wary to dive into yet another tepid tie-in. But in a surprising turn of events, the book actually turned out to be not as bad as I’d feared. (more…)

Mario Kart 7 Review: More Tracks, More Fun, More Blue Shells

With the initial announcement of Nintendo’s 3DS, there was a flurry of obvious guesses as to what franchises would be brought to the new, revolutionary console. Chief among those was the Mario Kart series, which has leapt from one platform to the next with popularity and success. When the trailers first started pouring out for the latest game, titled only Mario Kart 7, fans were not disappointed. Having spent quite a bit of time behind the wheel, I can say that – while blandly titled – Mario Kart 7 lives up to all the hype built around it. (more…)

Super Mario 3D Land Review: An Innovative Way to Have Vintage Fun

I’ll just say this right off the bat and get it out of the way: Super Mario 3D Land is a ridiculous amount of fun, but there is also a ridiculous amount of frustration. Are you ready for levels that are so innovative and adorable they make you gasp in delight? Are you also ready for levels that make you want to hurl your (in my case, ludicrously expensive) 3DS against a wall? Chances are, if you’re even reading this review, Super Mario 3D Land is a game you want to play – and should. Just be sure you have a stress ball – and the charger for your 3DS – handy. (more…)

Resistance 3 Review: It Won’t Be Hard to Resist This Game

Insomniac Games had a lot to live up to with the newest entry in the Resistance series. The ending of Resistance 2 was so devastating, so powerful, so moving, that it was impossible for me to predict what was going to come next. I imagined some sort of intense space opera moving from there, possibly where humans went out into space, searching the rift that was created at the end of the second game. I created whole storylines in my head, many of which involved Hale somehow still being alive. But what I didn’t imagine was the utter and complete disappointment that would be Resistance 3. (more…)

Uncharted: The Fourth Labyrinth Review: You Remind Me of the Drake

Christopher Golden’s Uncharted: The Fourth Labyrinth is another tale set in Nathan Drake’s adventure-filled universe. For the first time, fans get to follow Drake through the plot of a book instead of actually getting to control him through one of Naughty Dog’s beloved games. As Drake and his mentor, Sully, race across the world trying to unlock the secrets of the labyrinths built by Daedalus, they unravel an ancient mystery and end up with more than they bargained for. But is an intriguing plot fueled by these famous characters enough for this book to be a success? (more…)
