This week’s “Game of the Weekend” also comes from the 3DS eShop. WayForward’s Mighty Switch Force! is on sale for $2.99 all weekend long.

New Releases: NCAA Football 13, Rhythm Thief & the Emperor’s Treasure, Ice Age 4, More

It is hot. Like, too hot. Too hot to do anything but complain. And complain we will, as we’re in the dog days of Summer and the new release slate is ridiculously bare. Game publishers will eventually jump onto the “Summer Blockbuster” mentality, I just wish they’d do it sooner.

This week’s big new release is NCAA Football 13 for the PS3 and Xbox 360. It’s joined by Sega’s 3DS rhythm game, Rhythm Thief and the Emperor’s Treasure and the multiplatform movie tie-in game, Ice Age: Continental Drift – Arctic Games.

Nintendo has also selected the second Game of the Weekend, Sakura Samurai: Art of the Sword, which will be available at a discounted price ($4.99) all this weekend.

If you’re looking for more games from a bygone era, Nintendo has also added the NeoGeo game 2020 Super Baseball to the Wii’s Virtual Console.

The DSiWare and WiiWare Shops also received a ton of new titles this week, you can check them out after the break. (more…)

Nintendo Download: Kingdom Hearts 3D demo, Marvel Pinball, more

Marvel Pinball 3D leads this week’s smattering of 3DS eShop releases. But shooting a virtual metal ball through tables based on Iron Man, Captain America, and the Fantastic Four doesn’t compare to this week’s biggest addition: a Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance demo.

Tongue-twisting titles aside, Nintendo also added a second demo to the 3DS eShop today, the Sega-published rhythm game Rhythm Thief & the Emperor’s Treasure.

In other news, Nintendo is jumping on the weekly bargain bandwagon with their “3DS eShop Game of the Weekend” promotion. The first title to get a temporary price cut is indie side-scroller VVVVVV, which will be available for $4.99 this weekend.

Pokemon Black 2/White 2 to be released on October 7

The DS still has one big game (OK, technically two) left in it as Nintendo plans to release Pokemon Black 2 and Pokemon White 2 this Fall. Today, the publisher confirmed that the games will be available in stores on October 7.

Nintendo also announced they’ll be adding Pokemon Dream Radar, an augmented reality game where Pokemon invade your house, to the 3DS eShop on the same day. Several hard-to-find Pokemon caught in Pokemon Dream Radar can even be transferred to Pokemon Black 2/White 2.

“Fans will want to count the days until October 7, when they’ll not only get to play the successor to one of the biggest Pokemon adventures ever, but also expand their Pokemon experience to the Nintendo 3DS with Pokemon Dream Radar,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing. “No matter whether people are playing on Nintendo DS or Nintendo 3DS, they’ll be getting an incredible Pokemon experience that expands upon the beloved Pokemon Black Version and Pokemon White Version games.”

It’s Pokemadness!

Activision announces Wreck-It Ralph tie-in game

Normally, when Activision announces they’re producing a video game tied to a film, I shrug with a certain sadness. It is a shrug that says “Haven’t they given up the ghost?”

But Wreck-It Ralph managed to stop me mid-shrug, because the concept of the Disney film may work in the game’s favour. In a nutshell, Ralph is an arcade bad-guy, who sets out to prove that he can be a good guy. The game itself will take the form of a 2D side-scrolling beat’em up in a similar fashion to classics like Double Dragon or the recent game based on cult comic film adaptation Scott Pilgrim Vs The World. Activison Publishing Executive VP David Oxford certainly sees it that way:

“Wreck-It Ralph, as a brand entity, is perfectly suited for video game stardom. With the fantastic characters and creative atmosphere envisioned by Walt Disney Animation Studios, we know fans are going to love seeing their newfound favorite characters embark on an all-new side scrolling adventure.”

The company is clearly targeting the film’s audience, choosing to release Wreck-It Ralph exclusively on Nintendo systems (DS, 3DS, and Wii). The game will take place after the events of the film, with the Wii version offering a classic two-player co-op mode, with Ralph’s friend Fix-It Felix as the other character. The game will hit stores around November 2, when the film is rampaging into cinemas.
