Warp Zoned’s 2016 Golden Pixel Awards: A Look Back at the Year in Video Games
In a very real way, the game industry wiped the slate clean in 2016.
After nearly a decade of development difficulties, Square Enix unleashed Final Fantasy XV on the world. Fumito Ueda and Sony Japan Studio overcame similar troubles to finally release The Last Guardian. Id Software shook off the past and was reborn after the launch of the fourth game in the Doom franchise. Blizzard closed the book on their failed “Titan Project” with the release of Overwatch. Naughty Dog said goodbye to Nathan Drake, but gamers said hello to altered realities that were both “augmented” and “virtual.” Nintendo found new kingdoms to conquer with Super Mario Run. And the launch of No Man’s Sky taught us that while the hype machine sometimes fails to deliver, the chance for a brighter tomorrow is always there.
But before we venture off into that great unknown, let’s look back at some of gaming’s highlights from 2016. (more…)
Conan O’Brien’s Clueless Gamer segment is being developed as a standalone series
Conan O’Brien has produced some of the best television of the last few years when he’s taken his eponymous TBS talk show on the road to visit far-flung locales like Cuba, Comic-Con, and Armenia. But the host can also score big laughs by playing video games (badly) in a small non-descript room as part of his regular Clueless Gamer segment. The segment works so well that Team Coco and TBS have decided to get together and produce a standalone series based on it.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, production on the Clueless Gamer spinoff will start next month, though O’Brien won’t be hosting it:
“We’re going into production next month on a new series, Clueless Gamer, based on the viral video [Conan O’Brien has] done where he essentially makes fun of video games, gets celebrities to play and makes commentary on them,” TBS president Kevin Reilly told THR during an interview about the future of the late-night talk show. “We’ve gotten to the point where video game companies are sending us their new product for us to play and make fun of because it’s been such a huge success. We’re going to go into production on a series of that.”
The most recent Clueless Gamer segment featured Conan sitting down with Terry Crews to play Battlefield 1. But the comedian has also recently fumbled his way through Overwatch, Mortal Kombat X, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Doom, and many others.
Home Alone gets the 8-Bit Cinema treatment in their latest video
Maybe it’s just me, but the “set traps to capture bad guys” genre of games seems like it should be bigger. There’s Night Trap and Tecmo’s Deception series, but I’m having trouble coming up with any others.
Even though Christmas was a few days ago, it’s still a great time for Christmas movies, and 8-Bit Cinema has gifted us their latest video… Home Alone. This time, the “What If It Was A Game?” troupe has transformed Kevin McAllister’s battle against the Wet Bandits into an overhead action RPG similar to The Legend of Zelda (naturally, The Old Man is portrayed by Old Man Marley).
While 8-Bit Cinema normally gives new and classic movies the game adaptations they never had, several different games based on the Home Alone franchise have been released over the years, including one for the NES. The real game is a side-scroller, but it’s functionally identical to 8-Bit Cinema’s adaptation.
Animated interquel Gravity Rush: Overture (The Animation) is now available
Gravity Rush 2 will be released exclusively for the PS4 on January 20, but fans who want to know what happened after the end of the first game should check out Gravity Rush: Overture (The Animation), an animated interquel that fills in the gaps between the sequel and its predecessor. Part 1 is embedded above and Part 2 can be found after the break.
And if you can’t wait to try out Gravity Rush 2, a demo is now available to download from the PlayStation Store. (more…)
Universal Studios Japan unveils first look at Super Nintendo World amusement park
Universal Studios Japan has given fans their first look at “Super Nintendo World,” which will open in 2020. The first Nintendo-themed area for the amusement park chain will celebrate its grand opening just before the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, and a brand new conceptual rendering has given us a glimpse at Peach’s Castle and Bowser’s Castle.
Universal has announced plans to spend nearly half a billion dollars to build the massive attraction:
Super Nintendo World will be comprised of expansive and multilevel environments filled with unprecedented, state-of-the-art rides, interactive areas, shops and restaurants, all featuring Nintendo’s most popular characters and games. Development cost at Universal Studios Japan is currently expected to exceed 50 billion Yen [$433,520,000]. Super Nintendo World will be developed mainly using the park’s current parking area and part of an area designated for future expansion.
In addition to the sights and sounds of the Mushroom Kingdom, Universal has promised that “Super Nintendo World” will stimulate “all five senses” for Nintendo fans. Perhaps Link’s recipe file from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will make its way onto the menu at “Super Nintendo World.”
Universal will also build Nintendo-themed areas at Universal Orlando and Universal Studios Hollywood. Details on those attractions will be announced at a later date.
Blizzard Publishing book-publishing label launches with World of Warcraft Coloring Book
The “Fantasy” section at your local Barnes & Noble is probably overflowing with adaptations of Blizzard’s biggest franchises. Yesterday, the developer announced their intention to get into the book-publishing business with the launch of their own label, Blizzard Publishing.
“Great stories and inspiring artwork have always been at the heart of everything we do,” said Lydia Bottegoni, the Senior Vice President of Story and Franchise Development at Blizzard Entertainment. “The creation of Blizzard Publishing gives us new opportunities to celebrate the art and stories of our games with Blizzard gamers as well as fantasy and sci-fi fans around the world.”
Blizzard is launching their new venture with World of Warcraft: An Adult Coloring Book, an “epic volume of more than 80 pieces of concept art, sketches, and more.”
The Blizzard Publishing label will also be used to retell some of the expanded universe stories from years part, including a line of reprinted “Blizzard Legends” titles. The first three book in the “Blizzard Legends” line will be Warcraft: The Last Guardian by Jeff Grubb, Warcraft: Lord of the Clans by Christie Golden, and World of Warcraft: Rise of the Horde by Christie Golden. Blizzard will also reprint a series of manga collections, starting with Warcraft Legends: Volume One and Warcraft Legends: Volume Two.
Blizzard Publishing has plans to release a number of additional titles in 2017 including Art of Hearthstone, Cinematic Art of StarCraft, as well as additional novel and manga reissues. All Blizzard Publishing titles can be purchased from the Blizzard Gear online storefront, and many will also be available at your local bookstore.
Commercial director Simon McQuoid will probably direct the next Mortal Kombat movie
Kevin Tancharoen directed two feature-length webseries based on the Mortal Kombat saga for Warner Bros. (2011’s Mortal Kombat: Legacy and 2013’s Mortal Kombat: Legacy II), but the studio has also spent the last five years trying to produce a third theatrical adaptation of the fighting franchise. And after all that time, it looks like they may have finally found their director.
According to Variety, Simon McQuoid is in discussions to direct the next Mortal Kombat movie, with Saw‘s James Wan serving as a producer. Lawrence Kasanoff, one of the driving forces behind 1995’s Mortal Kombat and 1997’s Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (and the upcoming Tetris movie), has signed on as an Executive Producer. No actors are currently connected to the third Mortal Kombat film, but Warner Bros. confirmed the film’s script will be written by rookie screenwriter Greg Russo.
Even if you’re a serious film buff, McQuoid’s name is probably something of a question mark. Until now, the filmmaker has worked exclusively in advertising, though Variety notes that his commercials have won multiple awards including a Grand Clio, a D&AD Pencil, and a GRANDY Award.
Nintendo is taking a Legend of Zelda Escape Room on tour in 2017
It looks like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild won’t be the only new Hyrulian adventure that Nintendo has planned for 2017. The consolemaker has teamed up with Scrap, the winner of USA Today’s “Best Escape Room of 2016” award, to create a Zelda-themed live puzzle experience known as Defenders of the Triforce:
While the words “escape room” might come to mind when describing this new experience, Defenders of the Triforce is so much more than that. Instead of escaping from a locked room, participants work in teams of six to solve a mystery in a huge area, all within a set time limit. The experience will let guests interact with classic items and characters seen in The Legend of Zelda series like the Goron, Zora, and Kokiri tribes. Discovered items can be used to solve puzzles and move forward into other areas, just like in The Legend of Zelda games.
The Defenders of the Triforce Puzzle Tour is currently scheduled to hit eight cities next year, and tickets can be purchased at ScrapZelda.com:
