Daily Scoop: October 29, 2014 – New Indie Royale Bundle
It’s yet another rainy Wednesday, but that’s ok! Because we have lots and lots of great video game deals to keep our spirits up. Woo!
First up, let’s talk about the Debut 20 Bundle at Indie Royale! Beat the average to get The Interview, Another Star, Accidental Runner, Cubot, Irregular Zone, Koala Kids, and Thief Town. Give them more than $5 and get a bonus album as well!
Over at Steam, the Daily Deal is for early access to The Red Solstice. It’s 40% off right now, marking it down to $11.99. There are some great sales at the Humble Store right now as well! Out of the Park Baseball 15 is $9.99, Sacred 3 is $24.99, and Back to Bed is $4.79, among others.
And, of course, there are t-shirts!
Daily Scoop: October 28, 2014 – Coin Crypt is a featured new release on Steam today!
Well, we haven’t completely finished Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, but the credits did roll last night. We have a few more side missions to finish, and we’re considering playing it over again, but we definitely haven’t enjoyed it as much as we did Borderlands 2. But you’ll just have to wait for my review to hear my full opinion.
In the meantime, let’s talk about deals, starting with Coin Crypt! Although part of the Philadelphia-based team (Dumb and Fat Games) that made it, Greg LaBonav and Tyler Myers, are currently bicycling across the country, their game launched on Steam, and they’re listed in the featured new releases section. The game is also discounted down to $8.49 right now, which is even more reason to scoop it up!
Oh, and, you know, the Midweek Madness is BioShock Infinite for $7.49, and the Daily Deal is Transformers: Fall of Cybertron for $14.99, but whatever! Philly game devs represent!
Let’s also talk about the amazing new Humble InDIE Bundle. Pay what you want for OlliOlli, Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, and Tower of Guns. Beat the average to unlock Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, Jazzpunk, four copies of Risk of Rain, and more games to be announced. (Honestly, that tier is worth it just for one copy of Risk of Rain, let alone 4!) Pay $12 or more to unlock Shadowrun Returns. And, finally, pay $65 or more to unlock the Box O’ Treats, which includes a hoodie, 13 collectible cards, and a cassette tape with tracks from the games on it, among other things. How cool is that?
Let’s check out all of today’s awesome shirts!
Warner Bros. is creating a Mortal Kombat X tie-in web series
It’s unlikely we’ll ever get to see Mortal Kombat: Legacy III now that Kevin Tancharoen has departed the web series that became an Internet sensation after the director publicly released a proof-of-concept short by accident. But Warner Bros. is picking up the slack with the creation of a new Direct-To-Internet production house, Blue Ribbon Content.
Blue Ribbon’s first project will be a live-action web series that ties in to the story of the upcoming Mortal Kombat X. Like the game, it will pick up after the events of 2011’s Mortal Kombat and “[showcase] some of the franchise’s most storied characters, [as well as] introducing a new generation of fighters.” As of now, Warner Bros. isn’t ready to reveal who they have in mind for the cast or the director’s chair.
Mortal Kombat X will be released for the PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One on April 14, 2015. Presumably, this new web series will be released in a similar timeframe.
John Cena will curate WWE 2K15 soundtrack and team up with Wiz Khalifa for two tracks
2K Games struck gold when they decided to hand the last three NBA 2K soundtracks over to curators such as Jay-Z (NBA 2K13), Lebron James (NBA 2K14), and Pharrell Williams (NBA 2K15). Yesterday, the publisher announced they’re going to try again by giving the musical reins of WWE 2K15 to John Cena, one of the most popular “WWE Superstars” working today.
Cena took his duties very seriously and didn’t just pick a handful of songs to appear on the soundtrack. He teamed up with Wiz Khalifa to perform on two of the songs (“All Day” and “Breaks”), which will also be featured on a companion soundtrack album. Set for release as a digital download on October 21, the soundtrack album will include the following tracks:
- Wiz Khalifa & John Cena – “All Day”
- B.o.B (Featuring Future) – “Ready”
- Rudimental (Featuring Emeli Sandé & Nas) – “Free”
- Wiz Khalifa – “We Dem Boyz”
- Flo Rida (Featuring Sia) – “Wild Ones” [WrestleMania 28 Version]
- Knife Party – “Bonfire”
- Big Smo (Featuring Alexander King) – “Workin’”
- Mystery Skulls – “Ghost”
- Royal Blood – “Come On Over”
- Wiz Khalifa & John Cena – “Breaks”
Four additional songs can be heard in the game including Avenged Sevenfold’s “This Means War,” Dizzee Rascal’s “Heart Of A Warrior” (featuring Teddy Sky), Florida Georgia Line’s “This Is How We Roll” (featuring Luke Bryan), and Rise Against’s “Zero Visibility.”
WWE 2K15 will be available for the PS3 and Xbox 360 on October 28 and on the PS4 and Xbox One on November 18.
Oh my god… somebody is making a Tetris movie
And that somebody is Larry Kasanoff, the same producer behind 1995’s Mortal Kombat and 1997’s less-impressive Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. Kasanoff told The Wall Street Journal that his production studio, Threshold Entertainment, has signed a deal with The Tetris Company to produce the film as a theatrical release.
There’s no word yet on who will star in the film or when it’ll open in theaters, but Kasanoff believes that Tetris: The Movie should take the form of a massive sci-fi blockbuster:
“It’s a very big, epic sci-fi movie,” Threshold’s CEO Larry Kasanoff tells Speakeasy [a WSJ blog] exclusively. “This isn’t a movie with a bunch of lines running around the page. We’re not giving feet to the geometric shapes.”
Kasanoff’s sci-fi take on the game’s story isn’t the first time Tetris has looked to the stars for inspiration. The “plot” of 2002’s Tetris Worlds involved rescuing a race of intelligent machines from a dying planet through the power of “Tetrion Gates.” Each gate was unlocked once the player lined up a series of Minos (Tetris pieces) along the bottom of the well.
Personally, I hope it’s like the Captain N episode, “The Trouble With Tetris.”
Dead Rising film scores a director in Leprechaun’s Zach Lipovsky
Canadian director Zach Lipovsky, best known for the Made-For-TV movie Tasmanian Devils and the upcoming reboot of the Leprechaun franchise, Leprechaun: Origins, has signed on to helm the film adaptation of Capcom’s Dead Rising. He will be working a the script penned by screenwriter Tim Carter, who served as a Producer on the well-received web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy.
The 90-minute digital film is being produced by Legendary Pictures’ new subsidy Legendary Digital Media, and will be distributed via Sony’s Crackle streaming service in North America, while Content Media Corp has snagged the international distribution rights.
