Nintendo will re-release Wii and GameCube titles for Nvidia Shield in China

Nintendo began working with Nvidia several years ago, when the consolemaker was looking for a company to provide a graphical kick for their “NX” concept. In time, the NX would be revealed as the Nintendo Switch, and Nvidia confirmed the console would be powered by its popular Tegra chip. Today, Nintendo returned the favor in a surprising announcement to come out of China.

Speaking to Engadget, Nvidia has revealed that Nintendo will release remastered versions of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and Punch-Out!! for the Nvidia Shield microconsole in China. Other games from Nintendo’s GameCube and Wii catalogs will be released for the Shield in the future… including Super Mario Galaxy.

Extending the business relationship that brought Nvidia technology to Nintendo Switch, some of Nintendo’s most beloved Wii and Nintendo GameCube titles are officially headed to China for the first time. New Super Mario Bros. Wii, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Punch-Out!! are remastered in 1080p and available on the China version of Nvidia Shield, released today.

Because the Shield is so similar to the Switch, this deal might give us a window into Nintendo plans for its back catalog on the Switch. But that’s conversation for another time.

Staff of Polygon name their “500 Best Games of All Time”

Polygon recently celebrated its fifth birthday with a weeklong countdown of their choices for the “500 Best Games of All Time.”

Along with a high-profile roster of special guests (including Jeremy Parish, Susan Arendt, Jon-Paul Dyson, and Benj Edwards), the site’s staff put together this massive ranking of games that includes titles from nearly every platform and stretching back to the very beginning of the medium. They even set some ground rules:

We asked everyone to vote based on innovation, polish and durability, rather than simply personal taste. We cut games released in 2017 to eliminate recency bias. And we left out sequels that we deemed too similar to the games that came before them.

Collecting all those votes together, we then combed through the data for anomalies and came up with the final order you see here.

Polygon’s final tally looks very similar to our own “Scientifically Proven Best Video Games of All Time,” and this includes their selection of Tetris as the #1 game of all time.

Niantic’s next augmented reality game is Harry Potter: Wizards Unite

Niantic’s Pokemon Go turned the mobile gaming world upside down last year, as millions of players tried to “catch ’em all,” and escape to the wilderness to chase Pokemon hiding out in the real world. Yesterday, the developer announced their next augment reality game for mobile devices, and I think it’ll likely make an even bigger splash with the gaming public.

In Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, players will get the chance to “go on adventures, learn and cast spells, discover mysterious artifacts, and encounter legendary beasts and iconic characters as they explore real-world neighborhoods and cities across the globe.”

“At Niantic, our goal is to leverage technology to create real world experiences that help people to discover the wonderful, and often magical parts of the world around them,” said Niantic’s CEO, John Hanke. “The beloved Harry Potter stories have captured imaginations worldwide for more than 20 years and soon we’ll turn the fantasy into augmented reality, allowing fans and their friends to become wizards and witches.”

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will be the first title published by Portkey Games, a new division within WB Games devoted to creating video games based on characters and locations from J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World. So you can expect more Harry Potter games to be announced in the not-too-distant future.

More information on Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will be announced in 2018.
