Kickstart This! Winter 2013 Edition

Hello and welcome to the first Kickstart This! of 2013. A new year brings us new projects that we can help push from the planning stages to a grateful reality by offering donations in exchange for credits, goodies, and whatever oddities these humble game designers can dream up. This month we have the nomadic turn-based strategy game Unwritten, fantasy MMORPG Oceania, cuter-than-cute dungeon adventure Monsters Ate My Birthday Cake, evolutionary RPG Wildman, hectic sci-fi shooter Defend the Fawkin Station, and last, but by no means least, puzzle strategy game Pixel Kingdom. General Akamoto is having a pretty bad day. Just as he’s about to become Japan’s new Shogun, he’s betrayed by one of his own and killed. The icing on the cake? Someone is impersonating him. Skulls of the Shogun features fantastic art and sound design that marry themes from ancient Japanese art style with Cartoon Network style. The aesthetic attention to detail by 17-Bit is remarkable. The whimsical Japanese fantasy setting is brought to life by magnificent character and level design, and accessible, progressive tactical strategy gameplay. (more…)

The first cross-platform Xbox Live Arcade game is here. 17-Bit’s tactical action game Skulls of the Shogun can be synced with your Xbox 360, Windows Phone, Windows 8 PC, and Windows RT tablet so that you can always get a game in.

It’s available for 1200 Microsoft Points ($15) and features, I swear I’m not making this up, vibrant ghost-samurai warriors:

Skulls of the Shogun is a mashup between classic turn-based strategy and fast-paced arcade gameplay. Washing up on the shores of the afterlife, players meet and join forces with vibrant ghost-samurai warriors, magical animal-monks, and mustachioed samurai generals on the way to recapturing lost honor! Boasting an easy to play interface while retaining compelling depth, Skulls of the Shogun is a challenging test of skill for veteran gamers, but friendly even to players new to the genre.

Temple Run 2 downloaded 20 million times in first four days

templerun2Temple Run 2, sequel to Imangi Studios’ original Temple Run, was downloaded by quick fingers over 20 million times in just four days on the App Store. In that time, there have been over 210 million game sessions, which adds up to over 1,775 years of gameplay.

Holy. Crap.

It only took eight hours for the game to get to the #1 Free App, and right now, it’s the #3 Top Grossing App. How long will it take it to overcome the original, which has been downloaded over 170 million times across the App Store, Amazon Marketplace, and Google Play?

Temple Run 2 is currently available for free from the App Store on iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch. It’s due to come out on Android devices later this week.

Atari US files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy to become separate company

atari

Try to follow along, if you dare. In 1984, the original corporate entity known as “Atari” became two separate companies: the home-based Atari Corporation and the arcade-based Atari Games (which owned all of Atari’s arcade properties). In 1998, Hasbro purchased Atari Corporation and renamed the company to Hasbro Interactive. Meanwhile, the next year, IESA purchased GT Interactive and renamed it Infogrames. IESA then purchased Hasbro Interactive in 2001 and changed the name again (this time to Infogrames Interactive). In 2003, IESA came to an agreement with Atari Games to allow Infogrames Interactive to become Atari Interactive, Infogrames to be known solely as Atari, and IESA itself to be rebranded as Atari SA. In 2008, Atari SA purchased Atari Games and there was finally one Atari to rule them all for the first since 1984.

Until today.

Today, Atari’s US companies (Atari, Atari Interactive, Humongous, and California US Holdings) have filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection in a bid to form their own company, separate from Atari SA. After the bankruptcy filing, Atari expects to find a new buyer within 90-120 days. This new owner will control the Atari name and logo, as well as the rights to most (if not all) of the company’s major franchises including Pong, Asteroids, Centipede, Missile Command, Battlezone and Tempest.

Atari is making this move as their recent mobile titles (including Atari’s Greatest Hits, Asteroids Gunner, Breakout Boost, and Outlaw) have all been very profitable while parent company Atari SA remains riddled with debt.

While the new Atari won’t be the same Atari that was founded by Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney in 1972 (and included Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak as early employees), it’ll be interesting to see where the company goes from here.

2013 Independent Games Festival nominees announced

independentgamesfestival-header

The finalists have been announced for this year’s Independent Games Festival, and the lists are full of games I love, and games I can’t wait to love. I’m sad that 10000000 isn’t on there, considering that’s what would get my vote for the game that totally destroyed my life for two days. Well, I guess that might not be what developers want to be known for, but I promise – it’s a compliment.

Whether or not my favorite time on the iPad is represented here, there are plenty of great games being celebrated. Kentucky Route Zero is up for Excellence In Visual Art, Pixeljunk 4AM has been nominated for Excellence In Audio, and another one of my favorites, Super Hexagon, might just win Excellence In Design. The games will be playable at GDC in March on the expo floor. Hit the jump for the full list of categories, finalists, and honorable mentions. (more…)
