Kickstart This! Jingle Bells Edition

As John Lennon sang, “So this is Christmas, and what have you done?” It is the time of giving and the season to be charitable, and what better present to give than to donate to a worthy gaming project? However, for all you grinches out there, never fear! Not one of our games is Christmas-themed, so you still have a dazzling array of genres to choose from. There are deadly floppy-eared pets in Super Bunny Insurrection, the Myst-esque atmospheric exploration game Dream, and music creation using galaxies in DJ Space. Then we’ve got an attempt to build a legendary arcade emporium in Scotland with the Epic Arcade Project, and, last but not least, the Gobstopper of games, GameTron 1000.

Remember though, a game is for life, not just for Christmas. (more…)

Nano Ninjas Review: More like Nano Nonjas

nanoninjas-header

Nano Ninjas is a tower defense game for iOS devices from indie developer Bad Chunk. It sets angry robots who look like samurais and ninjas against actual ninjas. It’s built very similarly to Plants vs. Zombies, giving you the main adventure as well as some smaller minigames that unlock as you play the game. Your ninjas unlock as you go level to level as well, with the robots also increasing in difficulty. While it seems like a simple enough formula, does copying something popular make it work? (more…)

Industrial Toys set to launch their iOS FPS Morning Star in Spring 2013

Mobile developer Industrial Toys, which was co-founded by Halo Executive Producer Alex Seropian, has announced their “ambitious” first title, Morning Star.

In Morning Star, players will take on the role of a soldier aboard the Joplin, a research ship that has just received the first confirmed communication from an alien civilization. After exploring a strange alien artifact, these aliens transport the Joplin across space “to take part in an epic war that is not their own.”

Industrial Toys has recruited science fiction author John Scalzi to write Morning Star’s story and they’re striving to create a unique Unreal Engine-powered first person shooter experience on the iOS. To that end, they’ve removed the standard “virtual stick” control scheme for something specifically built for a mobile platform from the ground up.

“With Morning Star, we’re looking to change expectations for what kind of experience core gamers get from their mobile devices,” said Seropian. “We’re breaking new ground on everything from the visuals to the story to the ongoing support we’ll provide in the way of content, events and player involvement. It’s gonna be nuts.”

Morning Star is currently scheduled for a Spring 2013 release.

Angry Birds Star Wars Review: I’ve Got A Bird Feeling About This

Angry Birds Star Wars comes on the heels of the less-than-stellar puzzle-solving fiasco that was Bad Piggies, and is the next game in the Angry Birds Series (which also includes Angry Birds, Angry Birds Space, Angry Birds Seasons, Angry Birds Rio, Angry Birds Magic) from Rovio Entertainment. After that Bad Piggies episode, not only do we have our slingshot back, but we have a Lightsaber, too! How is that not amazing? (more…)

Angry Birds Star Wars “Hoth” update is now available

Earlier today, I was alerted to the fact that Rovio has released the “Hoth” update to Angry Birds Star Wars. And of course, I immediately updated the game and started playing. I’ve had things to do today (hey, naps are important, plus if I remember correctly from Daria, TV counts as a place to be), but I’ve peppered in as much playtime as I could and I’m almost done with all the levels.

The first update for ABSW is based on Episode V, The Empire Strikes Back and takes place on the ice planet of Hoth. Rovio says “[F]ans must lead the desperate Rebel birds to safety as they’re pursued by AT-ATs and Pigtroopers. Luckily the Rebels have an ace up their sleeve.” Yup, if you’ve been playing and noticed one of the characters missing from the lineup thus far, you’ll be happy to see that Princess Leia has made her debut (as the pink bird) and has an interesting (and mostly helpful) power.

Check out the trailer to see the Hoth adventure in action and if you’ve already purchased Angry Birds Star Wars, get the free update for iOS with 20 levels, and start it. Now! It’s pretty fun.

The Hoth update is coming soon to Android, Mac, and PC.

GameFly publishes their first game: iOS puzzler Writer Rumble

GameFly, gaming’s biggest rent-by-mail company, has announced the release of their first self-published game today. Writer Rumble was published by the recently formed GameFly Games and is now available on the iTunes App Stores for $0.99.

Writer Rumble combines two wonderful things: The gameplay from Boggle and literary legends like Edgar Allen Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, the Brothers Grimm, Jane Austen, and Homer. Each literary legend has an arsenal of special moves that change the board as they battle monsters (in a Survival Mode) and each other (in a local/online multiplayer mode). If you’re playing Writer Rumble on an iPad, you can also fire up some splitscreen multiplayer play.

“We are thrilled to have an addictively fun, quality-driven game such as Writer Rumble as our first foray into publishing under the new GameFly Games label,” said Sean Spector, GameFly co-founder and SVP of Business Development and Content. “Mobile gaming is an ever growing part of the gaming experience, and publishing high quality games is an important part of our digital strategy at GameFly.”

An Android version will be available in early 2013 and a variety of downloadable content packs will also be released throughout next year.

2012 Spike TV Video Game Awards nominees announced

It’s hard to believe that Spike TV has been handing out their Video Game Awards for ten years, but that’s exactly what will happen when the 2012 edition of the awards shows airs on Spike TV (and simulcast on Xbox Live) this December.

Once again hosted by Samuel L. Jackson, this year’s “Game of the Year” will come from a list that includes Assassin’s Creed III, Dishonored, Journey, Mass Effect 3, and The Walking Dead. Journey actually scored seven total nominations, making it one the most honored games at the 2012 VGAs (an honor it shares with Halo 4 and Borderlands 2).

This year’s slate of “Spike TV VGA World Premiere Trailers” (always the highlight of every VGA show) will include several unannounced projects as well as hugely anticipated 2013 releases like The Last of Us, Gears of War: Judgment, and South Park: The Stick of Truth.

The 2012 Spike TV Video Game Awards will take place on Friday, December 7. The complete list of nominees can be found after the break. (more…)
