Penny Arcade Adventures: Episode 3 announced – FOR REAL

No, this is not a drill, or a joke, or a test of any sort. The third episode of Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, HAS JUST BEEN ANNOUNCED. If you knew me very well, you would know that I do not joke about these things, and that this is a thing that I have been wishing for. The Penny Arcade team will be joining forces with Zeboyd Games to make this happen. Episode 3 will launch in 2012 on “as many systems [as possible].”

Robert Khoo – who mentioned on Facebook that they had quite a few new projects coming out – said, “We originally had the idea of an NES-style RPG last year, but we couldn’t find the right people to do it. After we saw Zeboyd’s Breath of Death VII and Cthulhu Saves the World, we knew we didn’t have to look around anymore. Zeboyd was a perfect match.”

Now please pardon me whilst I faint. *vapors*

Sega officially laces up Sonic CD for PC, PSN, XBLA, mobile devices

A few days after Sonic’s CD adventure was inadvertently revealed by Major Nelson, Sega has officially announced that Sonic CD will be coming to the PC, PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade in late 2011. The game will also be available for mobile platforms including iPhone, iPad, Windows Phone and Android.

Featuring the first appearances of Amy Rose and Metal Sonic, the Sonic CD port will include widescreen graphics, the original Japanese soundtrack, special iOS features, Achievements/Trophies and the same story every Sonic fan knows and loves:

Following the classic story of the original, Sonic CD sees Dr. Eggman plan to cause chaos and take control of the future by stealing Time Stones from the Little Planet. Sonic must speed through levels and travel through time while fending off Eggman’s robots to recover the Time Stones, and save Amy Rose from his mechanical twin, Metal Sonic!

Sonic CD will make its public debut this weekend at PAX Prime. The game (actually, the XBLA version) will be available to play at the Microsoft booth.

Bungie Aerospace launching Crimson: Steam Pirates on iPad

When some people start talking about strategic turn-based action on the iPad, most other people start snoozing. But when Bungie, of Halo fame, said they were making a game for the iPad about steampunk pirates, my ears perked up a little. Crimson: Steam Pirates will be out on the iPad on September 1 for free. I will repeat that… FREE!

Developed by Harebrained Schemes and published by Bungie’s mobile publishing arm, Bungie Aerospace, you’ll play as the pirate Thomas Blood, who commands a fleet of swashbucklers. The first eight missions in Crimson: Steam Pirates will be free to play, but and additional eight missions can be found in Chapter Two, “Tales of Captain Blood,” which will cost you an extra $1.99. So its not completely free to play.

With a little bit of luck, and an Internet connection, on September 1, I will be screaming, “Yarr me skallywags! Swab the poop deck and fire upon the adjacent poop deck over yonder! Don’t let their steam escape! Steal their steam then we will sell it back to them at a higher price! Show them our poop deck is better than their poop deck!… POOP!”

It sounded much more eloquent in my head.

Sonic 4 Episode 2 announcement coming “very soon”

Hey, remember that side-scrolling reboot of the Sonic series that Sega said would honor the hedgehog’s Genesis roots? And no, I’m not talking about the upcoming Sonic Generations. It’s easy to forget, but I’m actually talking about the episodic adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog 4.

Episode I was released in October of last year and in the ten months since, Sega has mentioned nary a peep about Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II. But, according to Sega West CEO Mike Hayes, an announcement concerning the downloadable game will arrive “very soon.” And actually, we should “look out for that one.”

Mike, buddy, I don’t want to tell you how to run your business, but if there’s nearly a year between the release of Episode I and the announcement of Episode II, that’s not an episodic release schedule. Just ask Gabe Newell.

Fruit Ninja Free now on Andriod Marketplace

For those of you who don’t have an iPhone, you can now get Fruit Ninja for free on the Android Marketplace.

Have a vendetta against fruit? Look at it all just sitting there in the supermarket. It needs to be taught a serious lesson. That’s what the developer Halfbrick thought when they created Fruit Ninja, the wildly popular mobile app centered around ninjas and visceral sprays of juice. With unlockable backgrounds and blades, the fun and zen like trance you can receive is unending.

Free is good. Free is nice. Thanks, Halfbrick.

BioShock Infinite and Uncharted 3 lead Game Critics Awards Best of E3 2011 nominees

Game Critics Awards have announced the nominees for E3 2011 and while none of them are surprising, it does give a glimpse of what the biggest games are going to be in the coming year.

BioShock Infinite and Uncharted 3 lead the pack with four nominations a piece, while fan favorites like Battlefield 3 and Batman: Arkham City sit among the next tier with three nominations each. As far as publishers go, Electronic Arts and Sony Computer Entertainment lead the industry with a commendable fourteen nominations each, while the Xbox 360 holds the most nominations on a platform, with a whopping 55 total. Ironically, the PlayStation Vita debuted with seven, while the well-established Wii only garnered two, down twelve from last year’s awards.

For the full list of nominees as well as more interesting fact breakdowns, head over to the official site here.

No surprises in THQ’s E3 lineup

After a flurry of announcements this week, THQ has finally unveiled their complete E3 lineup. Aside from the new stuff like Metro: Last Light, WWE ’12 and UFC Undisputed 3, this is the same lineup of games THQ talked about last year.

Sadly, there appears to be no mention of the publisher’s more distant projects like Darksiders II, Devil’s Third, Guillermo Del Toro’s Insane and the Turtle Rock-developed first person shooter.

You can check out THQ’s complete lineup after the break. (more…)

Minecraft: Pocket Edition coming to Xperia Play first, demo at E3

Multiple Independent Games Festival award-winning title Minecraft is coming to Android and iOS mobile devices in the form of Minecraft: Pocket Edition. This version will be custom-tailored to the smartphone experience, with developer Mojang citing “different screen size compared to PC, different hardware, different attention spans,” as needing accommodation. The game will release first on Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Play, taking full advantage of the device’s game controls.

Minecraft: Pocket Edition will have a demo and information session at this year’s E3, and will later come to Android and iOS devices.
