Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II, Just Sing, Star Trek Online, more added to PS Store

This week’s PlayStation Store update will take players into the unknown with a handful of new titles.

First up is The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II, a JRPG from XSEED Games. Developed by Falcom, players will return to the kingdom of Erebonia and attempt to save it from civil war on the PS3 and PS Vita.

Also available this week is a pair of free-to-play games for the PS4 that are out of this world… literally. In honor of the 50th anniversary of the franchise, Star Trek Online will let players sit in the Captain’s Chair and experience more than 125 episodes as they “explore strange new worlds and seek out new life and new civilizations.” Meanwhile, The Tomorrow Children from Q-Games drops players in a world where “mankind is on the verge of extinction, and you must cooperate with other players to build your town and defend it from monstrous invaders.”

Finally this week, Ubisoft will launch Just Sing, their karaoke spinoff of the Just Dance franchise, for the PS4. If you just need to sing, now’s your chance.

More information on all of these games can be found after the break. And a complete rundown of this week’s new add-ons and discounts is available at the PlayStation Blog. (more…)

NY Court dismisses Lindsay Lohan’s lawsuit against Rockstar and Grand Theft Auto V

grandtheftautov-bikiniHey, remember when Lindsay Lohan filed a lawsuit against Rockstar Games for using her image without permission in Grand Theft Auto V? I’m going to be honest with you, I completely forgot it was still an open case. Apparently, the gears of justice grind slowly, but last week, the Supreme Court of New York County dismissed Lohan’s case.

According to the Court Report, Lohan’s claim was dismissed because Rockstar did not use her name or likeness in Grand Theft Auto V. While Lohan believes that Rockstar stole her “signature style” for the bikini model featured in most of the game’s advertisements, the Court ruled otherwise.

However, the Court also said that even if Rockstar had based the character on Lohan, her claim would still be dismissed because Rockstar’s authorship of Grand Theft Auto V is protected under the First Amendment as “a work of fiction and satire.”

The Court also dismissed a similar lawsuit from Karen Gravano last week. Gravano, the daughter of famed mafia underboss Sammy “The Bull” Gravano, claimed that Rockstar illegally based the character of Andrea Bottino on her. While both women share a past entwined with the Sicilian Mafia and reality TV, like Lohan’s suit, the Court ruled that even if Rockstar had based the character on Gravano, they were protected by the First Amendment.

While this sounds like a pretty definitive end to two rather frivolous lawsuits, this might not be over for Rockstar. Both Lohan and Gravano have the ability to appeal the ruling and will likely do so.

New Retail Releases: Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II, Touhou Genso Rondo: Bullet Ballet, Just Sing, More

newreleases090616

Welcome to the first week of September, the unofficial start of the “Fall Gaming Avalanche.” I guess most publishers didn’t get the memo, because only a handful of new titles will be available on store shelves this week…

Players interested in obscure Japanese RPGs will finally get the chance to play The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II on the PS3 and Vita this week. Published by XSEED and developed by Falcom, Trails of Cold Steel II is a tactical turn-based title where the fate of the kingdom is at stake and only a plucky band of outsiders can save the day.

And speaking of obscure Japanese oddities, NIS America will release Touhou Genso Rondo: Bullet Ballet for the PS4 this week. The “bullet hell” shooter includes a Story Mode for one or two players, an online Battle Mode, and a punishing Boss Rush Mode.

If all this fighting has you depressed, you can always turn that frown upside down and sing your heart out with Ubisoft’s Just Sing, a singing-only spinoff from their Just Dance series. Bop along to Britney Spears, Sia, Justin Bieber, and more on the PS4 or Xbox One.

Finally this week, Bethesda will launch The Elder Scrolls Online: Gold Edition for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The popular MMORPG still doesn’t require a monthly subscription, but it now comes bundled with all four downloadable expansions: Imperial City, Orsinium, Thieves Guild, and Dark Brotherhood.

We’ll be back later this week with a look at the new additions to the PlayStation Store, Xbox Games Store, and Nintendo eShop. In the meantime, have a good Labor Day!

Batman: The Telltale Series – Episode 2 will be released on September 20

batmantelltale-header

Telltale Games has announced that the next episode in Batman: The Telltale Series, Children of Arkham, will be available to download for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on September 20. The episode will be released for the PS3, Xbox 360, and mobile devices at a later date.

Story details from Episode 2 are still being kept under wraps, but it sounds like The Penguin might complicate Batman’s plan to take down Carmine Falcone:

An old friend becomes a new adversary as Bruce learns more about the Wayne family legacy and Batman escalates the fight against crime and corruption throughout Gotham.

PAX West attendees interested in learning more about the future of Batman: The Telltale Series should head out to a special Crowd Play event at the Wyvern Theatre on Saturday, September 3. Hosted by The Nerdist’s Dan Casey, a noted “Batman Expert,” fans will get the chance to see the worldwide debut of Episode 2: Children of Arkham before anyone else.

PS Store Today: God Eater 2 Rage Burst, Attack On Titan, Resident Evil 4 for PS4, more

We’re hunting giant monsters in today’s PlayStation Store update…

First up is Bandai Namco’s God Eater 2: Rage Burst, a PS4 and PS Vita sequel to 2011’s Gods Eater Burst. Rage Burst picks up right where the first game left off, and reintroduces players to a team of warriors out to stop the rampaging “Aragami” with weapons known as “God Arcs.”

More man-eating monsters populate Attack On Titan, Koei Tecmo’s adaptation of the smash-hit anime series. Available now for the PS4, PS3, and PS Vita, Attack On Titan adds “a few original twists” to the story as Eren and his friends try to protect the Walls and stop the Titans.

The final game in this week’s giant monster parade is one that should be familiar to nearly every gamer… Resident Evil 4. Capcom has re-released the popular horror shooter for the PS4 with improved graphics and full Trophy support.

More details on all three of these games (and a few other new releases) can be found after the break. And, as always, a complete rundown of this week’s new add-ons and discounts can be found at the PlayStation Blog. (more…)

Mighty No. 9 Review: Mega Meh

mightynonine-header

When I was eight years old, there was only one place I wanted to go after school on Fridays: Gas City. Yes, a gas station. Not that I enjoyed the place or anything… rather, it was what was inside the station that intrigued me. See, back in the 80s, movie and game rental stores were everywhere. Pizza places had their own rental corner, grocery stores had theirs, and yes, even gas stations. The reason I kept going back to Gas City was because they had one game that no other rental store had: Mega Man. I remembered the exhilaration of staying up all night playing the game, and the sadness of having to return it on Sunday. I was never able to find the game for sale, so renting it was my only means of playing it.

I also distinctly remember having a meltdown once at the Record Town in the mall. My birthday had just passed, and my grandma gave me a check. To a small child, that was all the cash in the world. I was at the mall with my family, and we stopped so my dad could look at cassettes. But behind the clerk’s counter, stacked up to the ceiling, were Nintendo games for sale. I remember just staring at the games until one caught my eye: Mega Man 2. I had to have that game, and with a fresh $20 check in my pocket, my young mind figured that was all I needed. My mom had to break the news to me that I couldn’t just hand the check over to the cashier and get the game. Oh man, did I lose it. Here I was, about to own one of the greatest NES games ever made, only to be shot down by something as meaningless as financial insolvency? That did not sit well. Luckily, my mom took me out to cool off while my dad got it as a Christmas present, so all was not lost.

Point being, I’ve been a diehard Mega Man fan for as long as I can remember. Thus, when I heard that the Blue Bomber’s creator, Keiji Inafune, was making a spiritual successor to the franchise that I adore so much, I felt like a kid again. I could not wait until I was able to get my hands on another game, even if it was just Mega Man-ish. With the exception of Mega Man 9 and Mega Man 10, Capcom has been mind-baffling stingy with releasing proper titles for this game. So even though I wasn’t getting an actual Capcom game, I was happy enough to get something similar. Unfortunately, Mighty No. 9 is not the robot I was looking for. (more…)

Madden NFL 17, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, King of Fighters XIV, more added to PS Store

While the fourth quarter is still ahead of us, publishers are running up the score with today’s PlayStation Store update.

Let’s start things off with Madden NFL 17, the latest entry in EA Sports’s long-running football franchise. A rebuilt Franchise Mode is the focus of this year’s game, which is now available to download for the PS4 and PS3. Developer EA Tiburon is also touting improvements to the gameplay on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.

Also available to download for the PS4 this week is Square Enix’s Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. The latest game from Eidos Montreal picks up where Deus Ex: Human Revolution left off and explores the aftermath of a terrorist attack that’s left mechanically augmented humans “deemed outcasts and segregated from the rest of society.”

And if you think elective surgery to become some kind of cyborg is crazy, then the future portrayed in The King of Fighters XIV is just as wild. More than 50 humans, robots, demons, and monsters have come together to compete in a new fighting tournament from developer SNK and publisher Atlus on the PS4.

Finally this week, a trio of side-scrollers will surely appeal to retro-minded PS4 owners. Inside is a mysterious platformer from Playdead, and after a short round of Xbox One/PC exclusivity, it’s now available to download through the PlayStation Store. Inside shares a minimalist aesthetic with Metrico+, a PS4 platformer that was inspired by infographics. And Worms W.M.D. brings the strategy series to the PS4 for the first time.

More information about all of these games (and a few other new releases) can be found after the break. And don’t forget to visit the PlayStation Blog for a complete rundown of this week’s new add-ons and discounts. (more…)
