Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice will be released on September 27

sonicboomfireandiceOriginally slated for a Fall 2015 debut, the launch date for Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice was pushed into 2016 last September. This weekend, at the 2016 SXSW Gaming Expo, Sega confirmed that the Sanzaru-developed 3DS title will be released on September 27.

It’s not exactly a speedy return for Sonic the Hedgehog, but the character (and his famed red sneakers) will hoof it to San Diego this Summer for a special Sonic 25th Anniversary Party on July 22. Taking place alongside the glitz and glamour of San Diego Comic-Con, Sega will treat fans to special guests, musical performances by Crush 40 and Hyper Potions, exclusive 25th Anniversary merchandise, and more.

Tickets can be purchased now through Universe.com for $25 apiece.

newreleases032015

Prepare to race into battle with this week’s new releases…

Koei Tecmo and Nintendo are mashing together the massive battles from the Dynasty Warriors franchise with the beloeved characters from The Legend of Zelda once again in Hyrule Warriors Legends, a 3DS re-release of the Wii U blockbuster. Players who opt for the portable version of the game will be able unlock several new characters (including Linkle, a gender-swapped version of Link) and a new level based on The Wind Waker.

A pair of racing games that’ll surely appeal to people who love anything with four wheels are also set to be released this week. First up is TrackMania Turbo, a “fantasy racer” for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One from Ubisoft. Players will be able to put the pedal to the metal on more than 200 tracks and even build their own using the included Tracker Builder. Also available is Sebastien Loeb Rally Evo, a new offroad rally racer from Milestone for the PS4 and Xbox One. Originally released for the PC earlier this year, console players will now get a chance to drive through the mud on the way to victory.

Finally this week, Camouflaj will bring their award-winning mobile game Republique to the PS4. Even with a controller in hand, players will get the same stealthy experience with all five episodes from the game’s first season.

We’ll be back later this week with a look at the new digital-only releases on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Games Store, and Nintendo eShop.

New Releases: Pokken Tournament, EA Sports UFC 2, Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, More

newrelease031316

Put your dukes up, this week’s new release report is looking for a fight…

Nintendo and Bandai Namco kick things off with Pokken Tournament, a Wii U adaptation of the relatively recent arcade game. If you’ve ever wanted to take control of your favorite Pokemon as they battle it out, now’s your chance.

A bit more down to Earth, but featuring fighters who are equally bizarre (cough Mike Tyson cough), is EA Sports UFC 2. EA’s second trip inside “The Octagon” for the PS4 and Xbox One promises a more realistic fighting experience and deeper Career options.

Also available this week is Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games for the 3DS. While the two mascots won’t be trading blows, the Olympics always bring out a strong sense of competition for the whole world. And Mario versus Sonic is a fight that’ll probably never be settled.

Finally this week, Terraria is now available as a retail release for the 3DS, and Need For Speed will race onto the PC.

A full list of this week’s new releases can be found after the break. (more…)

Far Cry: Primal was the best-selling game of February 2016

farcryprimal-header

It’s time to listen to the mastodon roar as Ubisoft’s Far Cry: Primal was declared the best-selling game of February 2016 by The NPD Group. Proving that players might be in the market for more titles that feature pre-modern warfare, Far Cry: Primal beat out Call of Duty: Black Ops III, which took the #2 slot.

Several other new releases broke into the top ten last month, including Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 at #4 and Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright at #9. But the most surprising result might be the less-than-stellar debut of Capcom’s Street Fighter V. Even after a big push from Sony, the much-hyped fighting game was only able to punch its way to #7.

Sales of new PS3 and Xbox 360 games continued to drop last month, and total retail spending on new games slipped 10% from February 2015. Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, NPD’s Liam Callahan said: “New physical software trends suffered due to a sharp decline in seventh generation consoles of 52% despite the 14% (or $28 million growth) in eighth generation software. Portable software also had a drop of 30% due to a poor comparison to the launch of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D, which coincided with the launch of the New 3DS.”

A complete look at last month’s top ten best-selling titles can be found after the break. (more…)

Nintendo Download: Star Ghost, Mega Man Battle Network 6, Bravely Second demo, more

Wii U and 3DS owners will get a chance to try out a procedurally-generated space shooter, a Game Boy Advance classic, and an exclusive bonus adventure that’s part of an upcoming RPG…

Star Ghost is a procedurally-generated space shooter for the Wii U that was developed by Rhys Lewis, a developer that was formerly employed employed by Rare and Retro Studios. Also available this week for the Wii U is Mega Man Battle Network 6: Cybeast Falzar / Cybeast Gregar, which was originally released for the Game Boy Advance in 2005, and is the final game in the Mega Man Battle Network series.

Finally this week, Square Enix will bring a Bravely Second: End Layer demo to the eShop for the 3DS. In “The Ballad of the Three Cavaliers,” players will return to the land of Luxendarc and embark on an exclusive adventure with Yew, Magnolia, Janne, and Nikolai that won’t be available in the full version of the game. Players will even be able to earn bonuses that’ll transfer to Bravely Second when its released on April 15.

More information about all of these games (and a few other new releases) can be found after the break. (more…)

Kirby battles aliens with power armor in Kirby: Planet Robobot

Not a hoax! Not a dream! Kirby, Nintendo’s adorable pink puffball, is going to battle aliens and pilot a walking mech in his next game. Set to be released for the 3DS on June 10, Kirby: Planet Robobot is all too real:

Invaders have mechanized Dream Land. To restore his home to its original form, Kirby must use their technology against them with the new Robobot Armor. The Robobot Armor can even destroy a variety of obstacles in his way.

Kirby: Planet Robobot will support a wide variety of Amiibo figures, each of which will grant Kirby new copy abilities. A brand new Kirby series of Amiibo figures (featuring Kirby, King Dedede, Meta Knight, and Waddle Dee) will also be available. Finally, the game will include a four-player co-op mode known as “Team Kirby Clash.” Players will be able to select one of roles and battle it out with a series of bosses.

Power armor in a Kirby game… The only way this dream could be more beautiful is if Kirby: Planet Robobot is just a prelude to “Super Mario Warriors.”

Metroid Prime: Federation Force is still set for a Spring 2016 release… here’s a new trailer

Nintendo initially unveiled Metroid Prime: Federation Force during last year’s E3 Expo to a rather… let’s say divided… public response. Fans were furious about its focus on fast-paced shooting as opposed to exploration, the art style, and the complete absence of Samus Aran. But Nintendo pressed on, re-revealing the game during today’s Nintendo Direct presentation.

This new trailer for Metroid Prime: Federation Force more closely links its storyline to Samus Aran (though the popular heroine doesn’t make an appearance), but the gameplay still looks to be a co-op shooter at its core. Producer Kensuke Tanabe spoke a bit about Federation Force’s genesis and the reason behind Samus Aran’s absence, but the developer seemed to directly address the dissenters with his final words: “What I can say for sure is that Metroid Prime: Federation Force is a game that absolutely belongs in the Metroid universe. That, I promise.”

Metroid Prime: Federation Force will be released exclusively for the 3DS this Spring and Tanabe’s entire speech can be found after the break. (more…)
