Nintendo Power will shut down this December
Living in an age of instantaneous and free information has brought with it an unparalleled level of enlightenment across the globe, but it does have a downside… and its victims… namely, the hard copy press. Yesterday, Nintendo announced that their long-running official magazine, Nintendo Power, would be hanging up its joypad with its December 2012 issue.
The house of Mario released the following statement concerning the magazine, which was originally published in-house by Nintendo before they gave the rights to Future Publishing’s US arm in 2007:
Nintendo can confirm that Future US will end the production of Nintendo Power magazine with the last issue slated for December 2012. For Nintendo Power subscription inquiries, please visit nintendopower.com/customerservice.
The demise of Nintendo Power comes only after a year after another high profile gaming magazine, GamePro, was forced to close after its new quarterly format was poorly received. And as we languish in our nostalgia of excitedly reading gaming magazines and adorning our walls with their posters, we wish the employees of Nintendo Power the best with whatever the future holds for them.

Daily Scoop: August 20, 2012 – Weekends are never long enough
If my life were a James Bond film, that would be the title: Weekends are never long enough. It’s the sad truth, friends! They’re always packed to the gill these days, with awards ceremonies, and family stuff, and Sleeping Dogs, and homework. I can’t wait for this term to be over! Oh, and also, mega huge congratulations goes out to Tristin Hightower for winning Geek of the Year at Friday’s Philly Geek Awards! She deserved every moment of that standing ovation.

Nintendo Download: New Super Mario Bros. 2 on Sunday
This week’s Nintendo Download is a bit on the light side, but that’s because The Big N is waiting until Saturday night at midnight (which is technically Sunday, August 19) to add New Super Mario Bros. 2 to the 3DS eShop. The Super Mario sequel is Nintendo’s first simultaneous digital/retail release and whether you buy a physical copy or grab the download right at midnight, it’s this week’s biggest release, without question.
If you’re looking for something to download today, Crazy Chicken: Pirates is available in both a DSiWare version and a 3DS eShop version. It tasks players with “[restoring] peace to the Caribbean shores by shooting crazy pirate chickens.” Does that mean there are sane pirate chickens?
Finally, this week’s “Month of Mario” selection is Mario’s Picross. The Game Boy classic can be downloaded from the 3DS eShop for $2.99 from now through Wednesday, August 22.
Nintendo dates new Professor Layton, Paper Mario, many more; delays Luigi’s Mansion 2
It’s beginning to look a lot like Fall as Nintendo has announced release dates for many of their biggest 3DS, 3DS eShop, and DS releases for the rest of the year.
Art Academy: Lessons For Everyone! and Crosswords Plus will lead things off on October 1. Style Savvy: Trendsetters launches later in the month on the 22nd and then Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask makes its North American debut on October 28.
The Big N also has a big November planned with Freakyforms Deluxe: Your Creations, Alive! (November 5) and Paper Mario: Sticker Star (November 11).
Sadly, Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon won’t make it into stores before the end of 2012. The ghostbustin’ sequel has been pushed back and given a new “first half of 2013” release window.
Mamma mia! Oh well, hit the jump for a massive list of release dates for many of this Fall’s Nintendo-published and third party 3DS, 3DS eShop, and DS games. (more…)
NCAA Football 13 is the bestselling game of July 2012
The NPD Group has released their list of the ten bestselling games of July 2012 and, surprising no one, NCAA Football 13 took the top spot.
The football sim was the only new release from the month of July to crack the top ten, but to be fair, there weren’t very many games released last month. Instead, the top ten is populated by holdovers like Lego Batman 2, The Amazing Spider-Man, and two Call of Duty games (Black Ops and Modern Warfare 3). According to Joystiq, this motley crew could only manage sales of $260.7 million, a 23% drop from July 2011’s take of $338.5 million.
The full top ten is available after the break. (more…)
Nintendo Download: Super Mario Land 2 discount, Real Bout Fatal Fury Special, more
Welcome to your weekly Nintendo Download news! This week, Nintendo has discounted Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins as part of their Month of Mario promotion. The game will carry a $2.99 price tag from today through Wednesday, August 15.
Are you looking for something new instead? How about these new additions to the company’s download services:
Touch Battle Tank 3D (3DS eShop) – In Touch Battle Tank 3D, it’s you on a solo mission against a nearly unstoppable army of killer tanks. Your strategy – keep the action going and the shells flying!
Commando: Steel Disaster (DSiWare) – A military group is being attacked by some of its own war machines. It’s up to a commando and vehicle specialist code-named Storm to stop this terrorist threat.
Real Bout Fatal Fury Special (Wii Virtual Console) – Originally released in 1997, this fighting game is the sixth installment in the Fatal Fury series. With a system based on previous games in the series, the game introduced a more evolved two-line battle, improved the power gauge system and abolished the ring out system.
Wario Land goes for the gold in this week’s Nintendo Download
With the Opening Ceremonies of the 2012 Olympic Games less than 24 hours away, the big game in this week’s Nintendo Download is very fitting. The Olympics are all about the quest for the gold medal and the Game Boy classic, Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, is also all about the desire for gold. Though, in this case, Wario is looking for a giant gold statue instead of a tiny medal.
Wario’s first starring role in a game is also one-half of this week’s entry in Nintendo’s “8-Bit Summer.” Mario’s evil twin is joined by the Game Boy puzzler Mole Mania on the 3DS eShop.
Hit the jump for a look at the rest of the games in this week’s Nintendo Download as well a pair of 3DS eShop deals. (more…)
New Releases: MiCoach by Adidas, More
With a solitary new release last week and just a handful of new releases scheduled for this week, I think gamemakers are doing everything they can to avoid the juggernaut that is The Dark Knight Rises.
Can you blame them? But three games did manage to slip through to store shelves…
505 Games is bucking the trend by releasing MiCoach by Adidas for the PS3 and Xbox 360.
The exercise game is joined by a pair of DS games, the high-speed puzzle platformer, To-Fu Collection, and the match-3 puzzle game, Cradle of Persia.
