Daily Scoop: July 8, 2011 – Friday at last!
There are few things that put me in a better mood than Friday! It doesn’t hurt that I’ve got loads of games to play all weekend, including F.3.A.R., the Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception beta, and Link’s Awakening. I’m also nearly finished A Storm of Swords, which gives me a few short days to inhale A Feast for Crows before A Dance with Dragons comes out. Laundry? Cleaning? Sleep? Pffft.
Amazon’s Deal of the Day in video games today is absolutely amazing. It’s Hori’s Pikachu Charge Stand for the Nintendo DSi and DSi XL. It’s 50% at $14.99, and it is flippin’ cute. Like, way cute.

Fortified Zone, Qix added to 3DS eShop
Nintendo has unleashed the latest Nintendo Download and it is chock full of Virtual Console goodness on the 3DS eShop.
The service will be receiving two Game Boy classics today: the run-and-gunner Fortified Zone and the puzzler Qix.
3DS owners will also have access to the four games being added to the DSiWare Shop today. They include Jewel Keepers: Easter Island, a match-3 puzzler; Make Up & Style, a makeup artist sim; Farm Frenzy, a farming sim; and Roller Angels, an insanely colorful platformer.
Nintendo didn’t forget Wii owners eithers as the WiiWare service will receive Just Jam, a rhythm game that lets you “mix, match and lay down your own tunes.”
More information on all of these titles can be found at the Nintendo Download weekly newsletter.
New Releases: Earth Defense Force Insect Armageddon, More
The Summer slowdown is here. Just five games are scheduled to be released this week. But as a wise (and animated) man once said: “Celebrate your country’s independence by blowing up a small part of it.” And that’s just what I plan on doing with D3 Publisher’s Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon (PS3, Xbox 360), the closest thing we’ll ever get to a Starship Troopers video game.
Also available this week is a quartet of games that couldn’t be more diverse:
This week’s Nintendo Download includes Final Fantasy III, Kirby’s Dream Land
Are you ready to play one of the greatest RPGs of all-time in this week’s Nintendo Download?
The Wii’s Virtual Console plays host to Final Fantasy III (in actuality, the sixth game in the series) this week. The Super NES classic will be joined by the WiiWare release Big Town Shoot Out, a light gun western.
The 3DS’ eShop will receive a single game this week, Kirby’s Dream Land. Believe it or not, this Game Boy title was gaming’s introduction to the pink puffball.
DSi owners will receive a quartet of new games this week (which are also available on the 3DS eShop) including Moto eXtreme, a motorcycle racing game; Hearts Spades Euchre, a card game collection; Boardwalk Ball Toss, a bottle smashing game that’s not rigged; and The Lost Town: The Dust, an overhead zombie shooter.
More information on all of these titles can be found in Nintendo’s weekly newsletter.
“War is coming” in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 game trailer
If you thought the first Deathly Hallows game was just a cover-based shooter with Daniel Radcliffe stepping in for Marcus Fenix, check out the trailer for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 above. Besides watching Harry and Ron mow down dozens of people, you can also see Harry blindfiring from behind cover at a Dementor. Delta Squad Voldemort doesn’t stand a chance.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 was developed by EA Bright Light and it’ll be released for the DS, PC, PS3, Wii and Xbox 360 on July 12.
Nintendo Download: Guilty Gear Tangent, Stratego
Nintendo’s weekly update of their download services includes a bunch of quirky titles today.
On the DSi Shop there’s Pro Jumper! Guilty Gear Tangent!?, which is platformer spun off from the Guilty Gear series of fighting, and Stratego: Next Edition, a portable version of perhaps the greatest board game ever. Also available on the DSi Shop is Delbo, a Bust-A-Move-like puzzle game.
All of this week’s DSiWare offerings can also be downloaded from the 3DS eShop, which receives one exclusive of its own: the Game Boy classic Tennis.
On the WiiWare side of things there’s The Mystery of Whiterock Castle, a hidden objects game.
More information on all of these titles can be found after the break. (more…)
BioShock Infinite and Uncharted 3 lead Game Critics Awards Best of E3 2011 nominees
Game Critics Awards have announced the nominees for E3 2011 and while none of them are surprising, it does give a glimpse of what the biggest games are going to be in the coming year.
BioShock Infinite and Uncharted 3 lead the pack with four nominations a piece, while fan favorites like Battlefield 3 and Batman: Arkham City sit among the next tier with three nominations each. As far as publishers go, Electronic Arts and Sony Computer Entertainment lead the industry with a commendable fourteen nominations each, while the Xbox 360 holds the most nominations on a platform, with a whopping 55 total. Ironically, the PlayStation Vita debuted with seven, while the well-established Wii only garnered two, down twelve from last year’s awards.

Bejeweled 3 coming to DS, PS3, Xbox 360
It’s a match made in heaven as PopCap Games has announced they’ll be bringing Bejeweled 3 to the DS, PS3 and Xbox 360. In addition to the retail releases, a downloadable version of the game will appear on the PSN and XBLA. All three… err, five… versions will be released this Fall.
“Critics agree that Bejeweled 3 raised the standard for match-3 games to new heights,” said Ed Allard, studio head at PopCap Games. “This holiday, we’re bringing that experience to PlayStation 3, PSN, Xbox 360, Xbox Live, and Nintendo DS gamers with adaptations that look great and play even better on each platform.”
This week is the best time to catch up on PopCap’s previous puzzlers as the current XBLA Deal of the Week features big savings on the publisher’s back catalog including Bejeweled 2 and Bejeweled Blitz Live.
