Justin Verlander no-hits Major League Baseball 2K12 cover
With the World Series still fresh in everyone’s mind, 2K Sports has announced that Major League Baseball 2K12 will be comimg to the DS, PC, PS3, PSP, Wii, and Xbox 360 on March 6, 2012. They’ve also announced that Justin Verlander, the Detroit Tigers ace and probable AL Cy Young winner, will appear on the cover.
“Justin’s amazing performance this season speaks for itself,” said Jason Argent, vice president of marketing for 2K Sports. “Between his second career no-hitter and leading the league in virtually every pitching category, I can’t think of anyone else but Justin Verlander to serve as the face of Major League Baseball 2K12.”
“It’s a dream come true to be on the cover of Major League Baseball 2K12,” said Verlander, who pitched the second no-hitter of his career this season. “I’ve worked closely with 2K Sports on the MLB 2K series since 2007, and I couldn’t be more excited to continue my relationship with such a great baseball game.”
Roy Halladay of the Philadelphia Phillies was the cover athlete of Major League Baseball 2K11.
Hydrophobia Prophecy, DC Universe Online Free-To-Play added to PS Store
Did you pick up Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception today? If not, Sony has pushed another massive update onto the PlayStation Store and there’s surely something you find interesting.
This week’s big new release is Hydrophobia Prophecy, Dark Energy Digital’s water-logged survival horror game. It’s already made the rounds of the Xbox Live Arcade and Steam (in multiple different versions) and the “Prophecy” update is said to be the most complete version of the game yet. It’s available to download for $9.99 or, if you’re a PlayStation Plus subscriber, it’s free. Good deal!
This week also marks the beginning of DC Universe Online‘s Free-To-Play stage. The MMO is now, you guessed it, free to download and play. However, paid expansions will still be released including today’s “Fight For the Light” DLC pack.
Also available this week is Pinballistik, a pinball sim; Max & the Magic Marker: Gold Edition, an award-winning puzzle platformer; and a downloadable version of crossover fighting game Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe. Finally, a trio of new PS2 Classics were added to the store including space shooter Raiden III, half-vampire action game BloodRayne, and farming sim Harvest Moon: Save the Homeland.
PSP owners will be able to download one new game this week as well, a dungeon-crawling RPG from Atlus titled Fate: Extra. Apparently it’s based on a somewhat popular visual novel/anime.
More details on all of this week’s new releases and game add-ons can be found at the PlayStation.Blog.
New Releases: Uncharted 3, Sonic Generations, GoldenEye 007 Reloaded, More
November is here, and with it, the Fall gaming rush goes into overdrive.
This week sees the release of the PS3-exclusive Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, Naughty Dog’s latest Nathan Drake adventure promises to be its biggest yet. In fact, it’s so big, it’s off the charts (rimshot).
The rest of this week’s new releases are a throwback to a simpler time including…
- A high definition remake of GoldenEye, GoldenEye 007: Reloaded (PS3, Xbox 360)
- Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic meeting for the first time in Sonic Generations (PC, PS3, Xbox 360)
- The Lord of the Rings: War in the North (PC, PS3, Xbox 360), another LOTR action-RPG.
- Just when you thought it was safe to go in the water, there’s another Jaws game, Jaws: Ultimate Predator (3DS, Wii)
- And finally, there’s a new Oregon Trail game for the 3DS and Wii
For the non-throwback minded, there’ll also be an NCIS (PC, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360) game available in stores this week.

New Releases: Battlefield 3, Kirby’s Return to Dream Land, Pokemon Rumble Blast, More
The war begins this week as DICE’s Battlefield 3 will be published by EA on the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. The game will have two weeks by itself on store shelves before Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 returns fire on November 8. Have you chosen a side yet?
Also available this week is a Kirby game that we all thought was cancelled back in the GameCube days, Kirby’s Return to Dream Land. It’ll be available on the Wii this week, and yes, that’s Kirby wearing a Link hat and wielding a sword that looks suspiciously like the Master Sword. Nintendo will also unleash the melee-battling of Pokemon Rumble Blast on the 3DS.
A ton of smaller games will also make it onto store shelves this week including Namco Bandai’s Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi (PS3, Xbox 360), Sega’s The House of the Dead: Overkill – Extended Cut (PS3), Disney’s Disney Universe (PC, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360), Atlus’s The Cursed Crusade (PS3, Xbox 360) and Telltale’s Back to the Future (PS3, Wii).

Madden NFL 12 blitzes the September NPD list
Boom! After taking the month of August off thanks to the NFL lockout, the debut of Madden NFL 12 has reclaimed its rightful spot at the top of The NPD Groups’s monthly rankings.
The football sim was joined at the top of the charts by other big new releases: Gears of War 3 chainsawed the second spot and Deep Silver’s Dead Island landed at #3 (behold the power of hype, folks). EA Sports claimed the rest of the top five with FIFA Soccer 12 at #4 and NHL 12 a spot below. Resistance 3 at #7 and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine at #10 round out the bevy of new releases on this NPD list.
Holdovers from previous months include Deus Ex: Human Revolution (#6), Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars (#8) and Call of Duty: Black Ops (#9).
The complete top ten can be found after the break. (more…)
Sideway: New York added to PlayStation Store
Sony continues to roll out their “Only On PSN” exclusives with Sideway: New York, one of yesterday’s new additions to the PlayStation Store.
Sideway: New York is a puzzle platformer that follows Nox as he attempts to navigate a New York that is entirely covered in graffiti. The game has been priced at $9.99, but PlayStation Plus subscribers can snag it for 20% off.
Also new this week is a pair of NeoGeo remakes: the side-scrolling shooting of Metal Slug 2 and the one-on-one fighting of King of Fighters ’96. Both games can be downloaded for the PSP as well.
Finally, XS Junior League Football was added to the store as the latest PSone Classic. I never heard of it, either.

PSN experiences a new user information breach – 93,000 affected
It appears that Sony’s favorite network hackers took the summer off to get outside and enjoy some nice weather reconvene on how to continuously screw over the general gaming public.
As of yesterday, Sony has experienced a new series of attempts to test username and password combinations in order to find matches between the two. According to Philip Reitinger, Sony’s SVP & Chief Security Information Officer, the login information was likely obtained from another source, site, or company – but for all we know, it could have even been some of the same information obtained during the Anonymous outbreak earlier this year.
Fortunately, Reitinger states that the overwhelming majority of the login username/password sets failed to match – even more reason to conclude that it may have come from the previous PSN breach. He mentions that only one tenth of a percent (0.1%) – or 93,000 – of the accounts across PSN, SEN, and SOE were affected, and those accounts have since been locked, due to minimal or no activity on most of those accounts. No credit card information is reported to be in danger.
For those accounts where the username and password returned a match, Sony will require a password change after the temporary lock is lifted.
