PS Store This Week: Tekken 7, Danger Zone, Star Trek Bridge Crew, more

This week’s PlayStation Store update is like a reunion with old friends…

Things will really start to heat up this Friday, when Tekken 7 brings the story of the Mishima clan to an end on the PS4. The fighting game series that dabbled in storylines involving corporate-funded armies and sentient bears will finally resolve the mystery behind the Devil Gene and answer the question of who truly owns the Mishima Zaibatsu company.

But if you’re looking for something to download today, a trio of new games offer even more familiar faces. Three Fields launched Danger Zone for the PS4, a spiritual successor to the ridiculous crashes found in the Burnout series of racing games. Also available to download is Star Trek: Bridge Crew, a PlayStation VR-exclusive simulation of captaining your own Federation starship. Finally, Nihon Falcom will bring Ys Origin, a prequel to the popular RPG series, to the Vita.

Finally, Telltale’s The Walking Dead: A New Frontier comes to an end this week in Episode 5: From the Gallows.

You can learn more about these titles (and the rest of this week’s new releases) after the break. (more…)

Two brand new Open Betas are now available to download through the PlayStation Store for the PS4… and they’re both free.

First up, CD Projekt Red will give players the chance to try out Gwent: The Witcher Card Game. According to the developer, Gwent is “based on skill rather than luck” and will require the clever mastery of strategy and deception if you want to defeat your opponents. Elsewhere on the PlayStation Store, Marvel has launched a free-to-play beta for Marvel Heroes Omega, an upgraded adaptation of the mobile action RPG.

It’s also possible to travel back to the past this week with the PlayStation Store as Square Enix has added Star Ocean: Till the End of Time to the PS2-On-PS4 collection. Whether you’re playing it for the first time or the fifth, the epic RPG is now available to download for the PS4.

Later this week, Jason Voorhees will tear his way through a helpless group of camp counselors in Friday the 13th: The Game. The 4v1 multiplayer game will be available to download on Friday, May 26. Also set to launch for the PS4 this Friday is Rime, an exploration adventure from Tequila Works.

You can learn more about all of these games (and a few other new releases) after the break. (more…)

New Retail Releases: Ultra Street Fighter II, Disgaea 5 Complete, Rime, More

After recording a huge retail victory in April, Nintendo and its third-party partners are storming back this week with another batch of fresh Switch software.

Leading things off, Capcom will release Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers for the Switch on Friday, May 26. The publisher is hoping that this re-release will introduce the arcade classic to an entirely new generation, but it also includes a brand new first-person minigame, new color variations for all characters, and two new fighters (Evil Ryu and Violent Ken). Another re-release will make its way to the Switch this week courtesy of NIS America. The import house will launch Disgaea 5 Complete on Nintendo’s console, which will include the original strategy RPG and all of its downloadable content.

If you’re looking for new and never-before-seen games this week, Tequila Works will bring their puzzle platformer Rime to the PS4 and Xbox One. Featuring a unique and moody graphical style, the exploration game should offer an interesting change of pace.

Finally this week, THQ Nordic will bring the original Darksiders to the Wii U as Darksiders: Warmastered Edition. This new version of the action/adventure game include enhanced visuals and redone graphical effects.

LocoRoco Remastered, Strafe, NBA Playgrounds, more added to PS Store

It’s another throwback day for the PlayStation Store as several classic games receive re-releases on new platforms and long-forgotten genres get another chance with the gaming public.

First up is LocoRoco Remastered, a PS4 re-release of a quirky puzzle platformer originally released for the PSP. Players will need to tilt LocoRoco’s world of “blowing flowers, lively creatures, and pastel scenery” to fight back against a group of evil outer space creatures.

Also available to download this week is Strafe, a retro-styled first person shooter for the PS4 that includes procedurally-generated levels and tons of gore. And speaking of retro style, Saber Interactive has brought back the arcade antics of the NBA Jam franchise in NBA Playgrounds, which also launched yesterday for the PS4.

Fans of the Harvest Moon series will be pleased to learn that Yasuhiro Wada is back with another life simulation, Birthdays the Beginning. It’s launching on the PS4 alongside Harvest Moon: Save the Homeland, which was originally released for the PS2 in 2001. Resident Evil: Code Veronica X was also added to the PS2-On-PS4 section of the PlayStation Store yesterday.

You can learn more about all of these games (and a few other new releases) after the break. (more…)

Prey, Gnog, World to the West, more added to PlayStation Store

The month of May has belonged to Bethesda Softworks for a last few years, and it doesn’t look like they’re letting go anytime soon.

The publisher will bring Prey to the PS4 this week, and it’ll be available to download through the PlayStation Store on Friday, May 5. The first person shooter isn’t connected to Human Head’s Prey, but it does feature the same themes of malevolent aliens and human experimentation. Also available to download this Friday is World to the West, Rain Games’s followup to the well-received Teslagrad.

If you’re looking for something to play today, KO_OP has launched their “tactile 3D puzzle” Gnog for the PS4. It’s also compatible with PlayStation VR, so you can really get a feel for the game’s scary heads.

Finally today, Alex Rose Games will bring their “masocore” platformer Super Rude Bear Resurrection to the PS4. Players will die often as they rush through the game’s many stages, but luckily, “your previous bodies stack up and you can jump on them, push them around and use them as shields.”

On that happy note, you can find a complete rundown of all of this week’s new releases after the break. (more…)

What Remains of Edith Finch, Dragon Quest Heroes II, Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment, more added to PS Store

The PlayStation Store is bursting with new releases this week, so let’s not waste any time…

We start things off with What Remains of Edith Finch, a first-person narrative adventure for the PS4 from Giant Sparrow, the development team behind The Unfinished Swan. Giant Sparrow thinks of the game as a “collection of strange tales,” and players will need to explore a colossal mansion to learn the secrets of the Finch family.

If you’d rather whack things with a giant sword, PS4 owners will also get the chance to go medieval this week with the release of Square Enix/Koei Tecmo’s Dragon Quest Heroes II and Yacht Club’s Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment. More modern weaponry is available in Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3, a new combat simulation for the PS4 that offers an open world and gives players the ability to tackle missions in any way they choose.

A terrifying trio of new games will also be available to download for the PS4 this week. Deathstate is a “single-stick shooter” with retro-styled Lovecraftian monsters; Little Nightmares is a moody platformer from Bandai Namco; and Outlast II is a followup to Red Barrels’s first-person frightener. And speaking of horrors, The Walking Dead: A New Frontier – Episode 4: Thicker Than Water is also available to download for the PS4.
