90s Arcade Racer becomes 90s Super GP… and it’ll be released for Switch, PC, PS4

Remember The 90s Arcade Racer? The throwback racing game was previously in development for the PC and Wii U, and publisher Nicalis originally planned to release the game in 2013. But here we are four years later, and the game has several new destinations… and a new name.

According to its official website, The 90s Arcade Racer will now be known as 90s Super GP, and it’s now in development for the PC, PS4, and Switch. But don’t worry, its core theme remains:

Overview
It is the nineties, and there is time for arcade racing! 90s Super GP is soaked in the nostalgia of the greatest era of racing video games, when “realism” and tedious minutiae took a back seat to fantastic environments, hyperspeed drifting, and paint-scraping!

Offering three different racing classes and a variety of exciting gameplay modes, 90s Super GP skillfully combines the feel and aesthetic of classic arcade racers with the polish, physics modeling, and widescreen HD visuals of current-generation games.

Features

  • Intense stock car, supercar and formula racing in the style of the best arcade racers of the 1990s
  • Bright colors, crazy track layouts and dance music evoke the golden era of arcade racing games
  • Finely tuned driving physics with precision handling and old-school drifting
  • 12 unique vehicles with different attributes and customizable colors
  • Six dynamic and shortcut-filled courses, three of which have “Long” and “Short” variations
  • Arcade mode for quick races in any unlocked vehicle on any unlocked course
  • Championship Mode with four circuits in each of the stock, supercar, and formula racing classes
  • Local and online multiplayer modes, with online leaderboards

Nicalis isn’t ready to announce a new release date for 90s Super GP, but it’ll hopefully be available soon.

First Wii U trailer for The 90s Arcade Racer drifts into view

The 90s are alive on the Wii U. Developer Antonis “Pelikan13” Pelekanos and publisher Nicalis have released a new Wii U gameplay trailer for The 90s Arcade Racer, giving us a new look at the Daytona USA-inspired title. In addition to the de rigueur jungle course, the game will also include a track modeled after a slot car set. Pay attention to the background as the car whizzes around the very 90s bedroom for a host of Easter eggs including a television with an NES underneath it.

The trailer closes with a glimpse at Pop Dat!, a minigame embedded in The 90s Arcade Racer. Players will control a gun-toting mouse who has to shoot down a series of balloons. Yup, that’s pretty 90s.

The 90s Arcade Racer is also in development for mobile devices (iOS and Android) and PC platforms (Windows, Mac, and Linux), and should be available sometime this year.

Here’s the first gameplay trailer for the Daytona-inspired 90s Arcade Racer

Before Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport, racing game fans cut their teeth on “arcade racers” like Sega’s Daytona USA and Namco’s Ridge Racer.

Most of the arcades we frequented in those days have shut their doors, but the freewheelin’ spirit of those games will live on in Pelikan13’s The 90s Arcade Racer. Currently in development for the Wii U, mobile devices (iOS and Android), and PC platforms (Windows, Mac, and Linux), The 90s Arcade Racer will attempt to meld together elements from our favorites 90s arcade racers in a brand new game for modern audiences. Basically, it’s the “Snakes On A Plane” of on-the-nose game titles. But how on the nose is the title? Why not see for yourself in the first ever gameplay trailer, which has been embedded above.

The 90s Arcade Racer currently doesn’t have a release date and will be available… wait for it… when it’s ready.

The 90s Arcade Racer development is going well; Summer 2014 launch planned

ArcadeRacerThere’s been an update about The 90s Arcade Racer over at Nicalis news blog. The developer is excited to announce that porting the game from PC to Wii U is going well, despite having its “fair share of challenges.” There are a few things that aren’t translating to Wii U (and likely won’t be able to work on other consoles, either).

However, the developers have emphasized that “fidelity, image quality and a smooth framerate are our priorities,” and they are happy so far. The main goal for them is to make a “fun arcade experience,” and they want for there to be 30 cars you can race against in each race.

There’s no release date yet, but Nicalis’ goal right now is a mid-2014 release for The 90s Arcade Racer on the PC and the Wii U.

Nicalis picks up Kickstarter project The 90s Arcade Racer

Nicalis is well known for bringing VVVVVV, NightSky, and Cave Story to Nintendo platforms over the past three years. And they’re likely going to to continue their goodwill streak with their first Wii U project, The 90s Arcade Racer.

The 90s Arcade Racer started life as a Kickstarter project that was originally headed to the three PC platforms (Windows, Mac, and Linux). Nicalis stepped in and offered to back the developer, Antonis Pelekanos, with additional resources and the ability to publish the game on iOS and Android devices as well as the Wii U eShop.

As you can see from the trailer above, The 90s Arcade Racer takes its cues from the classics of the 90s arcade including Daytona USA, Sega Super GT, and Indy 500.

Blending the best bits of those three games together, The 90s Arcade Racer will include stock cars, supercars, and open-wheel racers in a game that features three tracks and “a nice blend between reality and fantasy. All while keeping with the 90s theme.”

The 90s Arcade Racer is expected to be available in November or December of this year.
