The Golden Pixel Awards 2011: Gaming’s Best, Worst, and Everything Else
Welcome to Warp Zoned’s first ever Golden Pixel Awards. Sit back and relax as we reward the best (and worst) games of 2011 with accolades based on their rather unique accomplishments.
The Apocalypse List
The bombs have fallen, the zombies have horded, food is scarce, and you’ve boarded yourself up in a bunker that’ll stand for a hundred years. What better way to spend your time in “The Vault” than by playing Warp Zoned’s favorite games from 2011? It doesn’t matter if you call it a “Top Ten List” or “Our Favorites From 2011,” but these are the games we plan to keep playing even if there was no game industry to keep making games. (more…)
Minecraft tops Time Magazine’s top 10 video games of 2011
Time Magazine has announced their “Top 10 Everything of 2011” lists, which of course contains a list of video games. Did your favorite games of this year make the list? Number 10…
10. Battlefield 3
9. Sword & Sworcery
8. Dark Souls
7. The Elder Scroll V: Skyrim
6. Bastion
5. Batman: Arkham City
4. Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception
3. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
2. Portal 2
1. Minecraft
My favorite game of 2011, Dead Space 2, did not make that list – nor have I seen it on any other lists. That’s what happens when games get released at the beginning of the year, I suppose. Ah well. For full commentary, check out the Time Magazine article.
Skyrim wins Game of the Year at 2011 Spike TV Video Game Awards
It’s seems like we’ve been hearing about The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim non-stop since the game’s release on November 11. Apparently, the Spike TV Video Game Awards Advisory Panel took all that chatter to heart as they awarded Bethesda’s RPG masterpiece their Game of the Year award last night. Not surprsingly, Skyrim took home Best RPG and Bethesda was awarded Studio of the Year as well.
However, the big winner of the night was Portal 2. Valve’s full-fledged retail sequel to the surprise hit Portal took home five VGAs including Best PC Game, Best Multiplayer, Best Performance by a Human Male & Female, and Best DLC.
Another big winner, believe it or not, was Bastion. The Supergiant Games-developed action RPG won for Best Downloadable Game, Best Original Score, and Best Song (“Build That Wall”). Congratulations to everyone at Supergiant, you deserved each and every one of those wins.
Batman: Arkham City, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword each won two VGAs.
The complete list of winners can be found after the break. (more…)
Obvious News Alert! Modern Warfare 3, Skyrim top November NPD list
The NPD Group has released their report of the best-selling games in November 2011 and in a stunning upset, the number one spot went to… Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
OK, a stunning upset that is not. And the rest of the top ten wasn’t any more surprising as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim breathed fire on the number two spot and Battlefield 3 was redeployed to the front as the third best-selling game in November.
The industry’s biggest month was able to supply even more new releases for the list as Assassin’s Creed: Revelations (#4), Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception (#7), Saints Row: The Third (#8), and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (#9) all earned a spot on the top ten.
In fact, November 2011 turned out to be one of the biggest months for game sales ever. Anita Frazier, a spokesperson for The NPD Group, said, “This November marks the best November on record for sales of new physical content.”
Here’s the full top ten:
1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PC)
2. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
3. Battlefield 3 (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
4. Assassin’s Creed: Revelations (360, PS3, PC)
5. Just Dance 3 (Wii, Xbox 360)
6. Madden NFL 12 (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PSP, PS2)
7. Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception (PS3)
8. Saints Row: The Third (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
9. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (Wii)
10. Batman: Arkham City (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
Complete list of 2011 Spike TV Video Game Awards nominees
Spike TV has revealed the complete list of nominees for the 2011 Spike TV Video Game Awards and Portal 2 has teleported back into the public’s consciousness as it leads the way with 11 nominations. Batman: Arkham City is also preparing for a big night as it racked up nine nominations. Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception rounds out the top three with seven nominations.
Not surprisingly, those three titles will all vie for this year’s Game of the Year award along with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.
There were a few blunders (who wants to break the news to the VGA Advisory Panel that Epic Mickey was released in 2010?), but Spike TV seems to finally be getting the hang of this awards show thing. One thing the channel definitely got right was the love for Bastion, which walked away with five nominations. That’s more than The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. I’m definitely pulling for “Build That Wall (Zia’s Theme)” by Darren Korb to win Best Song in a Game.
The complete list of nominees is available after the break. (more…)
Battlefield 3 blows away the competition in October NPD report
The NPD Group has released their report on the ten bestselling titles in October and, not surprisingly, Battlefield 3 takes the top spot. EA’s modern warfare sim likely won’t hold onto the crown for long as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was released to record-breaking sales earlier this week.
Battlefield 3 was followed by a slew of new releases including Batman: Arkham City, NBA 2K12, Rage, Just Dance 3, Dark Souls, and Forza Motorsport 4. That’s right, the brutal action RPG Dark Souls outsold Microsoft’s big racing franchise.
Holdovers for this month include Madden NFL 12, Gears of War 3, and that other football game, FIFA Soccer 12. The complete top ten for October can be found after the break. (more…)
Nightwing is nobody’s sidekick in this Batman: Arkham City trailer
WB Games and Rocksteady plan to release the Nightwing Pack for Batman: Arkham City on November 1, but they’ve decided to give us an early taste of the former Boy Wonder going toe-to-toe with The Joker’s thugs in the trailer above.
One thing’s for sure, Chris O’Donnell has never been this badass in his whole life.
WB Games detects 4.6 million copies of Batman: Arkham City shipped
It looks like The Joker really does get the last laugh as WB Games has announced that 4.6 million copies of Batman: Arkham City have been shipped worldwide since its launch a week ago. The massive success of Arkham City likely gives it the highest first-week sales total for any game released in 2011.
“Batman: Arkham City is one of the best action adventure games, proven by the tremendous reviews, and it further establishes the Batman brand as a marquee franchise for our growing business,” said Martin Tremblay, President, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. “Rocksteady Studios went above and beyond in delivering an incredible game and the support of the entire team at Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Entertainment drove the excellent campaign a game like this deserves.”
“The true test for any game is what the players think and we have been thrilled by their reaction to Batman: Arkham City,” said Sefton Hill, Game Director at Rocksteady Studios. “The team at Rocksteady put every ounce of effort into making the best Batman experience we possibly could, so we are overwhelmed by the incredible feedback from the community.”
Batman: Arkham City is now available for the PS3 and Xbox 360. A PC version is also in the works and will be released November 15.
