Rumor: Batman: Arkham Origins to have a multiplayer mode
According to reports on Kotaku, the third instalment of the Arkham series, Batman: Arkham Origins, will include a multiplayer mode which will allow players to take on the role of the game’s villains.
Kotaku says that “two independent sources” contacted them, of which one of them had contacted them before with some “pre-reveal tips” about the game that proved to be accurate.
The report states that you will take control of Bane’s and the Joker’s goons. In at least one of the multiplayer modes, players will be given the task of killing The Dark Knight and his sidekick, Robin. The villains said to be included in the multiplayer mode are Killer Croc, Deadshot, Firefly, Black Mask, Deathstroke, and “some kind of Electroman character” – who will possibly end up to be revealed as Electocutioner.
Batman: Arkham Origins will will swoop down for the Wii U, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC on October 25.
The Dark Knight returns this October in Batman: Arkham Origins
Riddle me this! What was Gotham City like before The Dark Knight battled The Joker in Batman: Arkham Asylum? We’ll get to find out this Fall as Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has announced the third game in the Arkham series will be available soon for the PC, PS3, Wii U, and Xbox 360. Batman: Arkham Origins will be released on October 25 and will tell the story of a “young, raw, unrefined” Batman during the early days of his career:
Batman: Arkham Origins features an expanded Gotham City and introduces an original prequel storyline occurring several years before the events of Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City. Taking place before the rise of Gotham City’s most dangerous villains and assassins, the game showcases a young, raw, unrefined Batman as he faces a defining moment in his early career as a crime fighter that sets his path to becoming the Dark Knight. As the story unfolds, witness identities being formed and key relationships being forged.
Sadly, Arkham Origins won’t be developed by Rocksteady Studios, the team behind Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. Instead, WB Games Montreal will take up the cape and cowl for this origin story. With a little less than seven months to go before its released, we won’t have to wait long for details on Arkham Origins. For example, the game’s appearance on the cover of the May 2013 issue of Game Informer gives us our first look at one of Batman’s foes: Deathstroke.
A companion 3DS/Vita game, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate will also be available on October 25. Developed by Armature Studio, the 2.5D game will take place after Arkham Origins and will feature a “Metroidvania” style of play.
WB executive confirms Batman: Arkham Asylum 3 will be released in 2013
Time Warner is a massive company, so it’s not surprising that their video game division, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, got short shrift during their most recently quarterly financial report. But the one bit of video game news we did get was a doozy.
John K. Martin, Time Warner’s Chief Financial Officer, confirmed that Batman: Arkham Asylum 3 is in development and will be released this year:
[W]e also have a strong games release this year, which will include the next release in the Batman Arkham franchise. So all in all, we expect Warners to post another very strong year in 2013.
Martin did not say if Rocksteady would be the team behind Arkham Asylum 3, but there’s plenty of previous rumors to fuel a little speculation on this one. That includes the possibility Arkham Asylum 3 will be set in the Silver Age or that it’ll feature a title from all those domains that WB Games registered last month.
Whatever it turns out to be, for now, we can all say, “Holy awesome announcement, Batman!”
Warner Bros. has (probably) registered more Batman: Arkham Asylum-related domains
Batman: Arkham City wasn’t always known as Batman: Arkham City. Originally, WB Games referred to the project as Batman: Arkham Asylum 2 when it was first unveiled during the 2009 Spike TV Video Game Awards. it was only later that we would learn the game’s official title as part of a mass registration of domain names by WB Games.
Can you guess where this is going? Yup, Warner Bros. has gone on another domain registration spree.
The following domains were all registered by MarkMonitor, the domain management company that handles all of Warner Bros.’s web addresses. So it is (technically) unknown if Warner Bros. even owns these domains. But they probably do. And they could have been registered for any number of reasons. As misdirection… as a pre-emptive strike against domain squatters… to promote a product completely unrelated to video games… for some other reason entirely. It is literally too early to tell.
But here’s the list of domains anyway. Personally, I think “Batman: Arkham Knight” sounds kind of awesome…

Rumor: Rocksteady readying Silver Age-styled Batman: Arkham Asylum prequel
Maybe the joke’s on us, but Variety is reporting that Rocksteady is planning to follow-up Batman: Arkham City with a prequel based on The Dark Knight’s Silver Age showdowns with The Joker.
One question, though. Who would voice The Clown Prince of Crime now that Mark Hamill has said he’s finished playing The Joker?
That wasn’t answered in the Variety report, but their tipster did reveal a bit more about the game. First, it’s said to be “highly stylized” and will feature cameo appearances from some of Batman’s fellow Justice League of America members. The game is also quite early in development and will launch in 2014 (or possibly later) for next generation systems.
You know, next week’s Comic-Con convention would be the perfect time to announce a new Batman game…
WB Montreal working on multiple unannounced DC Comics games
I think it’s safe to say that Batman: Arkham Asylum changed the way people view the superhero game. In fact, WB Games Montreal studio head Martin Carrier said that exact thing in a recent interview with Canadian Business: “Batman: Arkham Asylum [has] really changed peoples’ perceptions of the superhero game.”
During the lengthy interview, Carrier revealed that his studio is hard at work on multiple games based on characters from the DC Comics universe:
None of your titles have been announced, but you’re working on DC Comics games, right?
Carrier: We’re definitely working closely with DC on different titles, yet to be announced. It’s one of the reasons we talk to Geoff Johns and Jim Lee [the publisher’s head honchos] on a regular basis.
Carrier also confirmed that, like Batman: Arkham Asylum, none of titles they’re working on will be movie-to-game adaptations. However, with Man of Steel due to hit theaters in 2013, I’d bet a good chunk of Bruce Wayne’s billions that a new Superman game is in the works at WB Games Montreal.
