EA: Multiple unannounced games coming in 2020, next Battlefield scheduled for 2021, and Dragon Age 4 is in the works for 2022 (or later)

Executives from Electronic Arts had a lot to talk about yesterday during their latest quarterly financial report. So let’s dive right in…

CEO Andrew Wilson kicked things off by confirming that the next game in the Battlfield franchise is being prepped to launch sometime during the company’s 2022 Fiscal Year (which runs from April 1, 2021 – March 30, 2022) for the PS5 and Xbox Scarlett. In the meantime, developer DICE will spend 2020 creating updates and new content for Battlefield V:

Our Battlefield franchise and its community are also a major focus for us, and we’ll add new content and new ways to play Battlefield V in FY ’21. Targeting new innovation that will be enabled by next-gen platforms and a growing install base on the new consoles, our next Battlefield game is set for FY ’22.

With one of the company’s strongest developers taking an extra year to polish their next game, you might be wondering what EA has on tap for 2020. Thankfully, COO Blake Jorgensen used his portion of the presentation to fill in the gaps.

Jorgensen said that EA has multiple unannounced titles scheduled for release in 2020, including a pair of games from the publisher’s EA Partners program, and possibly at least one remaster (which would release alongside the already-announced Command & Conquer Remastered). He also talked quite a bit about Apex Legends, and confirmed that EA’s shooter will be coming to “new platforms and mobile” in the near future. While it’s possible he’s referencing the Switch in that quote, he’s more likely referring to the PS5 and Xbox Scarlett.

Looking further out, Jorgensen even mused about the status of Dragon Age 4. According to the executive, fans shouldn’t expect the next entry in BioWare’s acclaimed RPG franchise to arrive before EA’s 2023 Fiscal Year (which begins on April 1, 2022).

Finally, Andrew Wilson came back around to comment on the recent decision by the NCAA to allow college athletes to receive monetary compensation for their name or likeness. While many fans are hoping this means that EA will resume production on the NCAA Football franchise, Wilson would only say that the company is watching the situation closely:

With respect to NCAA Sports in general, yes, we have been in that business before as well. We saw the news today as did you, said by the NCAA Working Group. That news today was new to us. We’re still digesting it. We would anticipate that there is still a number of things that would have to happen over the coming years before we will be able to get back into that business, but certainly we’re watching closely.

EA’s next major releases, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Need For Speed Heat, will both be released in November.

Kingdom Hearts III, Resident Evil 2, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe unsurprisingly lead NPD’s list of best-selling games from January 2019

Kingdom Hearts fans were kept waiting more than a decade for the third game in the franchise, but Square Enix finally rewarded their patience with the launch of Kingdom Hearts III last month. As you might have guessed, fans purchased the game in droves, pushing it all the way to the top of The NPD Group’s list of best-selling games from January 2019.

Two highly-anticipated re-releases, Resident Evil 2 (#2) and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (#3) were close behind, and Bandai Namco’s Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown (#7) and Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition (#12) also cracked the top 20.

However, while several games had strong starts on the sales chart, the industry overall suffered a decline last month versus January 2018. All together, GamesIndustry.biz is reporting that total sales (hardware, software, and accessories) were down 19% to $893 million.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate beats up the competition as the best-selling game from December 2018

Even though it’s one of Nintendo’s marquee properties, the Smash Bros. series has always drifted a bit below the radar of the average gamer. That is definitely no longer the case, as The NPD Group revealed the best-selling games from December 2018 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate absolutely blew away the competition.

In fact, the tracking firm told GamesIndustry.biz that Smash Bros. Ultimate had a record-setting debut, and set a new “Launch Month” sales record for a platform exclusive. More impressive, it set this record even though Nintendo doesn’t share digital sales data with The NPD Group.

With the gift-giving season in full swing, some of 2018’s biggest games populated the rest of the list. Red Dead Redemption II slid down to #2, and it was followed by Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 (#3), Battlefield V (#4), and NBA 2K19 (#5).

Nintendo dominated the back half of the top ten, with three more titles on the list… Mario Kart 8 (#6), Super Mario Party (#8), and Pokemon: Let’s Go Pikachu (#9). Madden NFL 19 (#7) and Insomniac’s Spider-Man (#10) rounded out the top ten.

Red Dead Redemption 2 was the best-selling game of November 2018

It took an extra month, but Red Dead Redemption 2 is finally perched atop the NPD’s monthly best-seller list.

According to the tracking firm (as reported by GamesIndustry.biz), Rockstar’s open world epic was November’s best-selling game, topping such contenders as Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 (#2), Battlefield V (#3), and Fallout 76 (#4). Other new releases in the top ten include Pokemon: Let’s Go Pikachu (#4), Pokemon: Let’s Go Eevee (#5), and Spyro Reignited Trilogy (#5).

But the most important statistic in the NPD’s November report was on the hardware side of things, as the PS4, Switch, and Xbox One all sold over 1.3 million consoles. It’s the first time ever that three console platforms each sold more than a million units in a calendar month. All told, US consumers purchased more than $3.9 billion worth of video game hardware in November.

We’re digging deep into another Xbox Games Store update. Here’s what’s coming to the Xbox One this week…

The Battlefield franchise “returns to its roots” this week with the launch of Battlefield V. The World War II shooter will include multiple multiplayer modes (Grand Operations and Combined Arms) and a single-player mode (War Stories). A Battle Royale mode (Firestorm) will be added next Spring.

Also set to launch for Xbox One this week is Focus Home’s latest farming simulation, Farming Simulator 19, and Image & Form’s underground MetroidVania, SteamWorld Dig 2.

Battlefield V, Farming Simulator 19, Beat Saber, more coming to PS Store this week

It’s mid-week, so it’s time for another PlayStation Store update…

Electronic Arts will do battle with other game publishers this week for your attention with the PS4 launch of Battlefield V. Developer DICE is bringing the multiplayer shooter back to the World War II era, and they’ll add a Battle Royale mode to the game sometime next Spring.

Elsewhere on the PS Store, PS4 players who opt to download Farming Simulator 19 this week won’t have to deal with a rampaging army, but they will learn how their Thanksgiving feast moves from the farm to the table. But as they say, all work and no play make Jack a dull boy, so thankfully Beat Saber launches for the PS4 this week to provide a colorful rhythm experience for PlayStation VR owners.

Finally this week, Sony and Insomniac will expand Spider-Man once again with the Turf Wars expansion.

New Retail Releases: Battlefield V, Farming Simulator 19, More

The number of new releases has slowed to a trickle as we approach Black Friday, but there’s still a few big titles to look to this week.

Electronic Arts and DICE return to the battlefields of World War II this week in Battlefield V for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. It’s a little hard to keep up with the numbering that DICE uses for their multiplayer-focused franchise, but it’s interesting that Battlefield V doubles as the fifth numbered entry in the series and as a sly reference to the WWII-era slogan “V For Victory.”

You’ll find considerably less fighting in Farming Simulator 19 from Focus Home Interactive and Giants Software. According to the publisher, the PC, PS4, and Xbox One game will feature “the most striking and immersive graphics ever,” and players will also be able to pilot John Deere tractors for the first time.

A complete look at the rest of this week’s new retail releases can be found after the break. (more…)

New Retail Releases: Tetris Effect, World of Final Fantasy Maxima, Carnival Games, More

It’s not often that we can talk about a new Tetris game as the biggest release of the week, but that’s exactly what’s happening this week.

The Tetris Company has teamed up with Tetsuya Mizuguchi’s Enhance to transform the classic puzzle game into Tetris Effect, a wild extravaganza of sight and sound. Set to launch exclusively for the PS4 this Friday, November 9, Tetris Effect will also feature support for the PlayStation VR headset.

A pair of re-releases will also make their way onto store shelves this week as Square Enix will bring World of Final Fantasy Maxima, their chibi-styled crossover RPG, to the Xbox One for the first time. It’ll be joined by 2K’s Carnival Games, which brings its midway minigames to the PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.

Finally this week, WB Games is prepping a release of the Hitman 2: Gold Edition ahead of the action shooter’s Standard Edition launch next week. And stores will begin stocking the Xbox One S 1TB + Battlefield V Bundle, even though the included download code for Battlefield V won’t go live until next Thursday, November 15.
