Beatbuddy: Tale of the Guardians Review: A Toe-Tappingly Fun Ride

beatbuddy-review-header

Beatbuddy: Tale of the Guardians, the innovative and fun puzzle platformer by German developer Threaks, is finally here. We’ve been talking about it since PAX East, when we first fell in love with it. The developers have worked closely with famous musicians to create one-of-a-kind levels in which the in-game animations sync up with each part of the music. As you progress your way through the levels, opening up more of the environment, the song grows more complex, adding in another part of the song with each environmental queue. The game’s difficulty increases as well, with the puzzles getting more complicated and the platforming testing your reflexes. Add in the beautiful, hand-drawn levels and characters that are painfully adorable, and you’ve got yourself a perfect little game with lots to offer. (more…)

The narrator of Beatbuddy’s first gameplay trailer is awesome

Threaks has released the first gameplay trailer for their puzzle platformer, Beatbuddy: Tale of the Guardians. Pay close attention to the narrator as he describes all the “beautiful hand-painted levels, clever puzzles, head-bobbing music, and engrossing gameplay” that you see on the screen. He’s a hoot.

Beatbuddy: Tale of the Guardians will be available to download from Steam (for the PC, Mac, and Linux) on August 6.

Beatbuddy slides onto Steam on August 6

beatbuddy-boxA few days after the release of last week’s very amusing new edition of Threaks News, the developers of Beatbuddy have announced that the game has a new name (Beatbuddy: Tale of the Guardians) and an official release date (August 6). The PC, Linux, and Mac title will be available to download exclusively from Steam for $14.99.

Beatbuddy was included in our Best of PAX East 2013 roundup and we’re thrilled the game will be available to everyone soon. Are you unsure what Beatbuddy’s all about? It’s all about the beat…

Beatbuddy: Tale of the Guardians tells a story of an ethereal, blue creature who is awoken from his eternal slumber in order to save the world of Symphonia from losing music forever to Prince Maestro. Beatbuddy’s quest takes him to a series of worlds where he encounters vibrant characters, such as Harmony, Clef, Trebble, and Quaver, who aid him as he opens paths and solve puzzles on his journey. Threaks has created a rich, interactive experience utilizing its patent-pending sound technology that syncs in-game animations with the beat, enabling players to experience music that is woven into the fabric of this action-adventure.

Beatbuddy beta begins and Threaks shows off the game’s mo-cap session

Threaks is spreading the word about Beatbuddy, their upcoming rhythm-based puzzle platformer for the PC, with a new developer diary titled “Threaks News Episode 2.” Company CEO Wolf Lang and programmer Steve Liesche sit in their “new studio” (Translation: A desk in front of an air mattress) and show off the game’s “mo-cap session” (Translation: A guy in a Beatbuddy costume with ping pong balls taped to his face). I love those wacky Germans.

In actual Threaks news, Lang and Liesche announced that the Beatbuddy closed beta has begun. If you’re interested in joining, please email them at beatbuddy AT threaks DOT com.

Beatbuddy will be available through Steam’s download service sometime this Summer.

Threaks collaborates with Rhianna Pratchett on Beatbuddy

beatbuddy-header

One of our favorite games at PAX East 2013 was Beatbuddy, a musical puzzle-platformer from German developer Threaks.

Today, Threaks confirmed that Rhianna Pratchett will help with the story and script. After her work on the Tomb Raider reboot and Mirror’s Edge, Pratchett has become the go-to name for excellent game stories, and Threaks is thrilled to have her.

“When we started with the story of Beatbuddy last year, we initially held off contacting Rhianna because we assumed that she’d be too busy or might not be interested in a small indie project,” said Denis Rogic, Threaks’ Art Director. “It turned out that it was exactly the kind of thing she was looking for. It’s truly amazing knowing that we have Austin Wintory and Rhianna Pratchett providing their talents to our game.”

Beatbuddy will be available to download through Steam in July.

Beatbuddy Hands-On Preview: A New Approach to Rhythm Gaming

beatbuddy-header

Beatbuddy is a super adorable side-scrolling rhythm game made by a small German company named Threaks. It was on the show floor at PAX East, and after seeing their adorable plushy mascot on backpacks all over the expo floor, I needed to find out what this game was all about. Not only do they have a great little fellow to promote their game, they’ve also got fantastic gameplay to back it up. I was more than happy with Beatbuddy, and I was ready to stand there and play it for another hour, if they’d let me. (more…)

The PAXpocalypse List: The Best of PAX East 2013

paxeast2013-best-header

We don’t have the PAX pox, but what if the entire convention center was put under quarantine because of some mystery illness? What would you do? What would you see? We’d endure the PAXpocalypse by spending all of our time with the 13 games (nine playable, three developer-guided demos, and one board game) below. Though it would have to be after pushing the hordes of undead off our doorstep. Because any pox affecting PAXgoers would almost certainly have to lead to a zombie uprising. (more…)
