The film industry uses the opening of blockbuster season to signify the start of Summer. After that, the trio of Editor-In-Chief John Scalzo, Staff Writer Mike Ryan, and special guest Adam Woolcott talked about the expunging of the Star Wars Expanded Universe, and the unearthing of Atari’s E.T. landfill. Next, they examined Microsoft’s Xbox Originals film production plan and their possible E3 2014 announcements before turning to Nintendo and Fatal Frame 5‘s Japanese exclusivity, Mario Kart 8‘s free game deal, and Super Smash Bros. 4‘s Best Buy debut. Activision unveils Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare trailer a bit early after leak

Activision was all set to unveil Call of Duty 2014 on Sunday, May 4. But late last night, the trailer found its way onto the Internet (specifically, Destructoid), so Activision sped up their timetable.

The next Call of Duty game will be titled Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, and it will star Kevin Spacey as a private military contractor who is attempting to take over the world. To do that, Spacey’s character has outfitted his troops with power armor, cloaking devices, Spider-Man-esque climbing gloves, hoverbikes, portable bulletproof walls, and other futuristic weaponry.

Activision trademarked the Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare name in 2010 (along with Future Warfare and Space Warfare), so it good to see them finally doing something with it. The game is in development at Sledgehammer Games and will be released on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One (with possibly more platforms to come) on November 4.

Call of Duty 2014 to focus on private military contractors; full reveal set for Sunday

Activision has confirmed that the next Call of Duty game, the Sledgehammer-developed Call of Duty 2014, will be fully unveiled on Sunday, May 4. Aside from a single image, the game has been kept heavily under wraps. But a teaser video posted to the franchise’s official YouTube channel has confirmed that Call of Duty 2014 will focus on a private military corporation (PMC) takeover of the United States.

To promote the reveal, Activision has partnered with Vice to produce a mini-expose on PMCs, which is embedded above. The video takes a very dim view of PMCs, so it will be interesting to see how the game’s story will handle PMCs and the soldiers that work for them.

Call of Duty 2014 will be released this November and is in development for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The game is also likely in development for the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U as well, but we won’t know for sure until Sunday.

First image from Call of Duty 2014 revealed

CallOfDutyLogoDuring their Game Developer Conference panel last month, developers from Sledgehammer Games gave the attending audience a quick glimpse at an “in-game character image” from the currently unannounced Call of Duty 2014. Today, IGN revealed that image, an extreme close-up of a soldier, to the world.

Call of Duty 2014 is in development for next-generation platforms (PC, PS4, and Xbox One) and will be released this Fall. A current-generation version of the game (for the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U) is also expected, but remains unconfirmed as of now. An official announcement of the game will likely occur next month.

Sledgehammer says Call of Duty 2014 is “ambitious” and “creative”

CallOfDutyLogoActivision typically uses the month of May to announce a new Call of Duty game, but that didn’t stop Sledgehammer Games’ Glen Schofield from talking about the latest entry in the franchise during last week’s Game Developers Conference.

Sledgehammer’s General Manager stated that the currently untitled game (known internally as Call of Duty 2014) is the “most ambitious, most creative game we’ve ever made.” Along with partner Michael Condrey, Schofield’s track record at Sledgehammer includes 2011’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, as well as an unreleased third person action game set within the Call of Duty world. The pair first worked together at EA, where they produced James Bond 007: From Russia With Love and the much-loved Dead Space. A short “in-game character image” from Call of Duty 2014 accompanied Schofield’s words, but it’s probably going to be a while before we see anything more than that.

Call of Duty 2014 marks Sledgehammer’s first time as the primary developer on a game in the series. In February, Activision confirmed that the series would be moving to a “three-year cycle” with Sledgehammer switching off with Infinity Ward and Treyarch to develop new games in the Call of Duty franchise.

Sledgehammer Games developing Call of Duty 2014 as franchise adds third team

sledgehammergames-logoFor 2006’s Call of Duty 3, Activision handed the Call of Duty series off to Treyarch to complete a new game in the series while original developer Infinity Ward completed work on Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Since then, the two developers have worked in tandem to release a new Call of Duty game every year, with Treyarch taking the “even” years and Infinity Ward releasing their title during the “odd” years.

But yesterday, during their quarterly financial report, Activision announced they will add a third team to the mix to give each developer three years to create a new Call of Duty.

Sledgehammer Games assisted Infinity Ward on 2011’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and they will use that experience as the lead developer on the still-shrouded-in-mystery Call of Duty 2014. According to Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg, the publisher moved the Call of Duty series to a three-year development cycle to give each team more time to produce a great game: “This will give our designers more time to envision and to innovate for each title.” Hirshberg added that he believes “the 2014 game is going to be one of if not the best Call of Duty game ever.”

No other details were revealed about Call of Duty 2014, but Activision usually makes a formal announcement of the latest Call of Duty title in May ahead of the E3 Expo.

“Next-Gen Call of Duty” game in development at Sledgehammer Games

sledgehammergames-logoSledgehammer Games was founded in 2009 and the currently have just one credited game to their name: 2011’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Six months after that game shipped, the developer announced that they were staffing up for their next project, which was to be a new game in the Call of Duty series. With Black Ops II and Ghosts released in the interim, its fair to ask, what happened to Sledgehammer’s CoD game?

Apparently, it’s still in the works and the company is still hiring new people to work on it.

Sledgehammer recently posted a large number of job announcements to their Careers page concerning a “next-gen Call of Duty game.” Details on the game are scarce, but several postings describe it as “hyper realistic.”

We know that Activision plans to release another Call of Duty game this Fall. Will Sledgehammer get their time in the spotlight? If history is any guide, we’ll find out for sure this Spring when Activision will officially unveil the next title in the Call of Duty series.
