Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s Blackout Mode will include zombies, vehicles, and 80 players
With the beta test for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4‘s Blackout Mode set to begin next week, Activision has reached out to Game Informer to share a few details about their take on the battle royale genre.
According to the magazine, Blackout Mode will support 80 players during the beta and at launch, though developers from Treyarch said that number could change in the future: “So we’re starting with 80 players, but we’ve gone higher than that. Whenever we launch a game as a beta or whatever, that’s the beginning of something. We’re going to actively be participating in the community and taking feedback, making changes and adapting, evolving the game as feedback rolls in. So there’s a lot that can go on that can happen beyond that first impact of the game going out there.”
The publisher and developer also shared a brief glimpse at the first set of vehicles that players will be able to commandeer in Blackout. A Cargo Truck (which holds five players) and an ATV (which holds two) will be the ground options, but four players will also be able to travel by sea in a Zodiac Inflatable Boat, while five can take to the air in a Little Bird Helicopter.
Finally, Activision confirmed that zombies will play a big role in Blackout, though we won’t know exactly how they work until the beta begins.
But speaking of the Blackout Mode beta, the publisher revealed the schedule for the upcoming online test on the game’s official website:

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice wins “Best of Gamescom” at Gamescom 2018
Gamescom 2018 closed its doors for the last time today, and From Software’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice slashed its way towards the coveted “Best of Gamescom” award.
There were a wide range of winners at this year’s expo, with all three consolemakers predictably winning “Best Game” on their respective platforms. In case you were wondering, those awards went to Spider-Man (“Best PS4 Game”), Ori and the Will of the Wisps (“Best Xbox One Game”), and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (“Best Nintendo Switch Game”). Nintendo’s fighter also collected the audience-voted award “Most Wanted Consumer Award.”
Other platform-specific awards were claimed by Ubisoft’s Anno 1800 (“Best PC Game”) and Madfinger’s Shadowgun War Games (“Best Mobile Game”).
The complete list of nominees and winners can be found after the break. And it’s never too early to start planning for next year’s expo. Gamescom organizers announced that next year’s show will begin on August 20. (more…)
Break back into a zombie-filled Alcatraz in a new trailer for CoD: Black Ops 4’s “Blood of the Dead” map
After shining a spotlight on “Voyage of Despair” and “IX,” Activision and Treyarch are back with a new trailer for “Blood of the Dead,” the third Zombies map set to launch alongside Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.
Players will once again descend on a zombie-filled Alcatraz in this remake of “Mob of the Dead” that also features the original Zombies heroes:
“Blood of the Dead” takes the classic Zombies heroes — Richtofen, Dempsey, Takeo, and Nikolai – on a journey to a secret laboratory beneath the iconic Alcatraz Penitentiary. Encountering a familiar enemy Hell-bent on imprisoning them for all eternity, the Primis crew quickly realize that the future predicted by the Kronorium – the future they sought to secure – is now in serious jeopardy.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will be released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on October 12.
Dark Horse will publish a prequel comic for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s Zombies Mode
Last week, Dark Horse announced that they’re working on another Call of Duty Zombies comic series, which will serve as a prequel to the Zombies Mode set to be included in this Fall’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.
The new Call of Duty Zombies comic will once again be written by Justin Jordan, with interior artwork by Andres Ponce and Mauro Vargas, cover artwork by E.M. Gist, and colors by Dan Jackson. According to the Dark Horse Newsfeed, we know that Issue #1 will be available in stores on September 5 (with a collected edition sure to follow sometime in the future):
In Call of Duty Zombies, pieces are set in motion that shadowy forces have long been putting into place. They believe what comes next cannot be stopped. Little do they know an unlikely group from around the globe is about to be assembled.
Dark Horse Comics and Activision invite fans to meet the brand-new cast of characters from this year’s game!
Gist will sit down for a signing session at Dark Horse’s Comic-Con booth tomorrow, July 19, at 3:00 PM (Pacific Time). He’ll be joined by Treyarch’s Jason Blundell and Craig Houston.
In case you missed it, Activision and Treyarch recently released a new Story Trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s Zombies Mode. The game will be available for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on October 12.
Latest CoD: Black Ops 4 trailer includes a glimpse at the Zombies story… and a zombie tiger
Activision and Treyarch have unveiled a brand new trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 that provides a deeper look at the time-travelling storyline at the center of the game’s Zombies Mode:
Scarlett Rhodes is out to solve her eccentric father’s mysterious disappearance. With the help of three loyal outcasts, she’ll fight waves of the undead and uncover a prized relic wielding an extraordinary power that threatens all of humanity.
It looks like Scarlett, and her compatriots, will jump between the waterlogged interiors of the Titantic in “Voyage of Despair” to the gladiatorial combat of “IX” (but carrying their futuristic weaponry the entire time). I’m sure it’s a longshot, but I’m hoping the zombified tiger makes his way into every timeline.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will be released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on October 12.
The Road to E3 2018: Sony’s Big Showcase… Featuring Death Stranding, Spider-Man, The Last of Us Part II, and More
The 2018 E3 Expo begins in exactly 18 days… so let the speculation begin! Today, we’re peering into our crystal ball at what Sony might have in store for gaming’s biggest showcase.
Sony Interactive Entertainment recently made “a rare break from tradition” and gave fans an early glimpse at the four games they plan to highlight during their 2018 E3 Showcase. As usual, Sony will shine a spotlight on several cinematic single-player adventures, including Kojima Productions’s Death Stranding, Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part II, Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima, and Insomniac’s Spider-Man. All four games are expected to launch later this year (though, full disclosure, only Spider-Man has an official release date), so Sony should have plenty to say. (more…)
CoD Black Ops 4 Reveal: Treyarch will give players three Zombies experiences at launch
Activision and Treyarch hosted their “Community Reveal” for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 earlier today, and they delivered a massive amount of information during the livestream.
The big brains at Treyarch have announced they’ll bring three Zombies experiences to Black Ops 4 at launch. And because they’re always mixing things up, this time around, fans will be able to fight zombies on the Titanic (“Voyage of Despair”) and in a gladiator arena (“IX”). A third map (“Blood of the Dead”) will be familiar to fans as a remake of the Alcatraz-set “Mob of the Dead” scenario. Multiple difficulty levels and a streamlined “Zombie Rush” mode will also be available:
Celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the original Call of Duty Zombies, Black Ops 4 also debuts an entirely new and unprecedented Zombies experience that’s the biggest Day One offering in franchise history… with three fully-featured Zombies experiences at launch… IX, Voyage of Despair, and Blood of the Dead.
With immersive new adventures, a brand new cast of characters and a nefarious new enemy, Black Ops 4 Zombies will feature the deep gameplay and easter eggs that the rabid community of fans devours. It also includes the most customizable action to date, new systems for creating and completing community challenges, and social systems designed to connect players. Black Ops 4 also reintroduces difficulty levels and an in-game tutorial to onboard new players to the Zombies universe, while giving hardcore players the option of ratcheting up the challenge.
Additionally, Zombie Rush is a brand new mode that streamlines the gameplay experience, introducing enticing new challenges to grizzled veterans, while creating a whole new tempo of gameplay for newcomers.

CoD Black Ops 4 Reveal: Blackout Mode brings Battle Royale to Call of Duty
Activision and Treyarch hosted their “Community Reveal” for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 earlier today, and they delivered a massive amount of information during the livestream.
As expected, Call of Duty is diving headfirst into the “Battle Royale” genre with Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s Blackout Mode. We don’t know how many players will be able to compete in Blackout Mode, but we do know it’ll feature “the largest map ever built in Call of Duty,” as well as the ability to play as classic characters from the entire Black Ops series:
[In] today’s world premiere, the team also introduced Blackout… the new battle royale-style experience that combines Black Ops’ signature fast, fluid, guns-up combat, with fierce new levels of survival competition across iconic Black Ops settings re-imagined at a colossal scale. Blackout is an experience unlike any other game or mode in Call of Duty history, where players will have to scavenge, strategize, compete and survive to win.
Featuring the largest map ever built in Call of Duty… 1,500 times bigger than Nuketown… Blackout thrusts players into a collision course as they play as classic characters spanning the history of the Black Ops series including the original Call of Duty Zombies Origins cast.
Battling solo or in teams, players will engage in diverse combat complete with ground, air, and sea vehicles across a gamespace unlike anything ever in Call of Duty. Players will encounter fan-favorite Black Ops map locations and call upon a massive arsenal of Black Ops weaponry and equipment as the winner-takes-all action creates a new way to play Call of Duty.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will be released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on October 12. And the first trailer for Blackout Mode has been embedded above.
