13 Nintendo-published games for the Switch have sold more than 1 million copies

Nintendo-branded products have always taken up a hefty portion of Santa’s sack, and 2018 was no different as Switch sales were huge during the holiday season.

Nintendo sold 15.05 million Switch consoles during the last quarter of 2018, bringing the platform’s total install base to 32.27 million. Consumers also spent the last three months stocking up on software, purchasing 63.51 million games from October through December.

Two games stood out last quarter on the sales charts, as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate sold 12.08 million copies and the combined might of Pokemon: Let’s Go Eevee! and Pokemon: Let’s Go Pikachu! sold 10 million copies. All told, 13 Nintendo-published Switch games have joined the vaunted “Million-Seller” club during this fiscal year (April 2018 – December 2018):

Nintendo’s current fiscal year will end on March 31, and the consolemaker will announce their full-year sales figures sometime in April or May.

Octopath Traveler, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Hand of Fate 2, more coming to Nintendo eShop this week

It might be the middle of Summer, but it’s a big week for the Nintendo eShop…

Switch owners have been waiting patiently for another epic RPG to grace the console, and it looks like they might get their wish with tomorrow’s release of Octopath Traveler. The retro-styled RPG was created by Square Enix… and it features 2D sprites, 3D special effects, and eight overlapping stories. RPG fans might also want to be on the lookout for Hand of Fate 2, which drops players into a “living boardgame” and asks them to defeat the enigmatic Dealer. Hand of Fate 2 will be released for the Switch on Tuesday, July 17.

But don’t worry, Nintendo has no plans to sit this week out, as the consolemaker will bring Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker to the 3DS and Switch for the first time on Friday the 13th. Originally released for the Wii U in 2014, Captain Toad is a puzzle-adventure game that’s built up a fervent (but small) fanbase over the years.

You can learn more about the rest of this week’s additions to the Nintendo eShop (including Adventure Time: Pirates of the Enchiridion, Let’s Sing 2018, Radio Hammer Station, and more) after the break. (more…)

Are you ready for even more Amiibo figures? While I’ll probably never get my hands on a Little Mac, Nintendo has gone ahead and announced a fourth wave of the popular toys as well as a special Super Mario series.

Wave 4 will be available sometime this Spring and will be comprised of six figures (Robin, Lucina, Pac-Man, Wario, Ness, and Charizard). Meanwhile, the special Super Mario series will launch on March 20 and include new figures for Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Yoshi, and Bowser. The series will also include Toad, who will be making his Amiibo debut.

All of these Amiibo figures will be compatible with Super Smash Bros. For Wii U and some will work with other Wii U games such as Mario Party 10 and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is ready to search for shiny baubles on the Wii U eShop this week. The isometric action game, which is based off a series of bonus levels from Super Mario 3D World, gets Toad (and Toadette) out into the world in his first starring role.

Toad will be joined on the Wii U eShop this week by Fire Emblem, the Game Boy Advance classic that marked the franchise’s American debut. In other Virtual Console release news, the NES version of Lode Runner is also available to download today.

Over on the 3DS eShop, a trio of new games are now available including Ultimate NES Remix, a portable NES minigame collection. Also new on the digital storefront today is Christmas Wonderland 4, a hidden object game, and Violetta: Rhythm & Music, a music game based on the Disney television series.

More details about all of these games can be found after the break. (more…)

New Releases: Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, The Crew, Kingdom Hearts 2.5 ReMix, More

newreleases120214

Welcome to December, ladies and gentlemen! On the average, December is a month that doesn’t see many new releases, but 2014 appears to be different. Six major releases will be available in stores this week, which is extremely atypical for the the first week of the final month of the year.

We start things off with the delightful and adorable Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker for the Wii U. Based on the Captain Toad sections found in last year’s Super Mario 3D World, Nintendo may have outdone themselves with their latest attempt to cram a ton of cuteness into a game while keeping the gameplay appropriate for all ages. Yup, I thinkl Toad in an archaeologist costume searching for lost treasure means we’ve finally reached “Maximum Nintendo.”

Next up is Ubisoft’s cross-country racer The Crew. Available for the PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox 360, Ubisoft held several beta tests to ensure that The Crew’s online modes work like a charm. Also available this week is Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMix, a new Kingdom Hearts compilation for the PS3.

Speaking of compilations, Nintendo has smushed together both NES Remix games into a Wii U retail disc known as the NES Remix Pack. It’ll be joined by Ultimate NES Remix, a 3DS edition of the NES-based minigame collection.

Finally this week, Terraria will make the jump to the PS4 and the Xbox One.

Are you ready for your dose of Sunday cuteness? I hope so, because Nintendo has released a new trailer for Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. Featuring the “Mini-Universes” of the game, this trailer ping pongs through 70 different levels from the game and each one offers plenty of sights to behold. Keep your eyes peeled for #56, it appears to be based on the original Donkey Kong arcade game.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker will be released exclusively for the Wii U on December 5.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker will be released on December 5

captaintoadtreasuretracker-header

Nintendo hasn’t said much about Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker since they announced the game at this year’s E3 Expo. But today, the publisher confirmed that Captain Toad will march on to the Wii U on December 5 with a budget price of $39.99.

Captain Toad is based on a series of minigames that originally appeared in last year’s Super Mario 3D World. But for Captain Toad, they’ve expanded beyond those simple rotating levels and will now include bigger adventures like “exploring a haunted house or escaping a smoldering volcano.” I gotta admit, I didn’t think little Toad had it in him.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker will be the first game released by Nintendo with Toad in a starring role. And the game will get even bigger in 2015 when Nintendo will patch in support for their upcoming line of Amiibo figures.

EGX 2014 Report: Assassin’s Creed Unity, Arkham Knight, The Order 1886, and More

EGX London, formerly known as the Eurogamer Expo, finally gives UK players a chance to their hand at unreleased games after all the other big Summer shows: E3, PAX Prime, Gamescom, and TGS. It sits at the right time of year too! I always tend to get a bit down on games over the Summer when my consoles sit mostly unused. After playing a dozen of the biggest games scheduled to release over the next nine months, I’m excited to finally charge a DualShock 4 again. On top of that, talking to so many gamers in one place really gives you a nice vertical slice of where the industry sits at the moment. But first… the games! (more…)
