Crash Banidicoot N. Sane Trilogy will be released for PS4 on June 30

Activision and Vicarious Visions have announced that the Crash Banidicoot N. Sane Trilogy will be released for the PS4 on June 30.

The publisher, working with Sony, plans to include the first three games from the franchise (Crash Bandicoot, Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, and Crash Bandicoot: Warped) in the compilation, and each game will get a complete makeover with remade graphics and audio:

This is a AAA remaster. We’re giving this the love and attention to detail that we pay to all of our AAA games. We’re building it using the original level geometry so that it plays as close to the original as possible. We’ve also referred to this as a remaster plus, as we are adding new features that we think the fans are going to love!

Members of the Vicarious Visions team also stopped by the PlayStation Blog today to discuss some of the development choices they made with the Crash Banidicoot N. Sane Trilogy.

N. Sane in the Membrane… Crash Bandicoot Trilogy crashes onto PS4 in 2017

Last seen as a welcome retro distraction in Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, everyone’s favourite orange marsupial is returning to the PlayStation 4 in Crash Banidicoot N. Sane Trilogy, developed by Vicarious Visions.

The developer, which originally got involved with Crash after working on Crash Bandicoot: The Huge Adventure for the Game Boy Advance in 2002, dubbed the N. Sane trilogy a “Remaster Plus” on the PlayStation Blog. This need for a new moniker is because the original games designed by Naughty Dog are 20 years old, and all the assets used would not directly translate to the new generation of consoles. To that end, Vicarious Visions rebuilt the trilogy collection from scratch, using the original geometry of the levels, but redoing the animation, art, and audio.

The result is a trio of games (Crash Bandicoot, Cortex Strikes Back, and Warped) that feel familiar, but have been completely retooled to almost better resemble a brand new game. The eyebrows are back, but in glorious high definition. There will also be Time Trials in all three games, plus the original will now have a proper save system. Vicarious has even managed to snare the original voice actors, including Jess Harnell and Lex Lang, to record fresh dialogue.

Although they didn’t specify an exact date, Sony confirmed the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy will drop sometime in 2017.

Voice actor strike reveals unannounced games like Lego Marvel 2, Brothers in Arms, more

legomarvelsuperheroes-header

SAG-AFTRA, a union representing voice actors and stunt performers, authorized a strike against game developers that began this morning. As part of the process, the union has published a list of projects that members are no longer allowed to work on, and it includes several unannounced games.

It wasn’t much of a shock to learn that EA Sports is already hard at work on Madden NFL 18 and NHL 18, but listings for Lego Marvel 2 and Brothers in Arms were a bit more surprising (though not unexpected). While WB Games has yet to make any noise about a new Lego Marvel game, Gearbox confirmed the existence of a fourth Brothers in Arms game last year.

A large number of mobile games also make up a large part of the list, as well as a few games that are denoted only by codenames. For example, Take-Two is working on something called “Alligator,” while EA is developing games under monikers as diverse as “Odin,” “Fearless,” “Scorpion,” and “Timbits.” We may never know what these codenames refer to (they may even belong to games that have already been released), but one of the union’s major demands is for developers to be more transparent during the hiring process and to use a game’s actual title when contracting with vocal/stunt performers.

Finally, several highly-anticipated 2017 titles will be affected by the strike including Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue, Injustice 2, and Crash Bandicoot Remastered. So hopefully the two sides can reach an equitable agreement soon.

UPDATE: A representative from WB Games has informed us that the inclusion of “Lego Marvel 2” in the SAG-AFTRA strike list is actually a reference to Lego Avengers, which was released earlier this year. However, Lego Avengers was announced in January 2015, several weeks before the union’s deadline for projects that must be part of the picket line.

I’m not sure why it was included on the list (it’s possible the union goofed), but the official line from WB Games is that “Lego Marvel 2” is definitely not a reference to “Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2” or any other unannounced game. That said, I’d be very surprised if WB Games isn’t working on another Lego Marvel game, and we’ll likely hear more about “Lego Marvel 2” in the future.

Long-lost animated cutscenes from Crash Bandicoot emerge

One of many former mascots for Sony’s PlayStation, Crash Bandicoot, was originally going to feature animated cutscenes between levels. Footage released yesterday via YouTube, thanks to a user named “9Matt2,” gave gamers their first look at the animation, which had been lost for more than 20 years.

David Siller, a Producer on Crash Bandicoot, spoke to Crash Mania about the cartoon:

“It was based on ideas for where we were going with this IP at that time. It was probably too ambitious in nature and was also trying to be humorous. It was never used or even embedded in the game as a hidden ‘easter egg’ treat.

Once UIS licensed the game to Sony for publication, Sony did not want it utilized since they were heavily pushing the ‘3D’ agenda.”

The first segment of the video was supposed to be the game’s intro, while the second part was going to be used for the outro of the game. Crash Bandicoot hasn’t been heard from in a long time, but it’s always fun to get a taste of gaming history.
