Cuphead, Forza Motorsport 7: Ultimate Edition, Burning Fight, more added to Xbox Store

Cuphead has arrived on the Xbox Games Store!

The side-scrolling shooter was inspired by animated shorts that were popular in the 1930s, and Xbox One players will finally get the chance to challenge its devilishly difficult bosses now. It’s joined on the digital storefront today by Turn 10’s latest racing simulation, Forza Motorsport 7: Ultimate Edition, and Hamster’s latest NeoGeo re-release, Burning Fight.

You can learn more about all of today’s additions to the Xbox Games Store after the break. (more…)

Content Crash #12: Should Game Journalists Be Good at Games?

Welcome everyone to the Content Crash podcast. I’m your host, Dan Hartnack. And with me, as always, is Keno Eastmond.

We’re chasing a number of stories this time including another look back at Gamescom 2017 and PAX West 2017 and the possible plotline for Half-Life 2: Episode 3. But the one discussion I’d like to have is if game journalists should be good at game.

This question came about because a journalist from VentureBeat uploaded a video of a playthrough of Cuphead. Recorded during Gamescom, Cuphead is an upcoming side-scrolling shooter with a highly-stylized Disney feel, and it looks amazing. But anyway, the journalist uploaded a video of his experience with Cuphead and he is just downright bad at the game.

So, should game journalists be good at games? Let’s discuss it.

Xbox UK wants to prepare us for “7 Ways Cuphead Is Going To Utterly Destroy You”

Studio MDHR will finally release Cuphead for the PC and Xbox One this month, and the side-scrolling shooter recently made appearances at Gamescom and PAX West. While attendees got to experience its insane difficulty firsthand, it’s hard to believe a game as adorable as Cuphead could be so brutal.

Thankfully, Xbox UK is here to help.

Microsoft’s British team has put together “7 Ways Cuphead Is Going To Utterly Destroy You,” a new video that highlights some of the most difficult moments from the game. Hopefully, your thumbs will be up to the task when Cuphead launches for the PC and Xbox One on September 29.

Travel back to the 1930s and watch Conan play Cuphead with Kate Upton on Clueless Gamer

Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Conan O’Brien and another episode of Clueless Gamer!

The comedian traveled down to the dingy Clueless Gamer set last night to play Studio MDHR’s Cuphead. Heavily inspired by 1930s animation (like Fleischer’s Superman cartoons), Cuphead is a side-scrolling shooter that’s designed for two players. So naturally, Conan decided to call up supermodel Kate Upton and asked her to hold his second controller.

Upton wasn’t very interested in their “date,” but she was actually pretty good at Cuphead. If this whole modelling thing doesn’t work out, she’s definitely got a future in the video game industry.

The highly-anticipated Cuphead is currently in its final stages of development, and will be released for the PC and Xbox One on September 29.

Microsoft announces September 29 release date for Cuphead

The 2017 E3 Expo has yet to officially begin, but as far as I’m concerned, the biggest announcement happened today during Microsoft’s Press Conference. No, I’m not talking about the Xbox One X, but Studio MDHR’s side-scrolling shooter, Cuphead.

As part of their presentation, the consolemaker announced that Cuphead will be released for the PC and Xbox One on September 29. They also unveiled a short new trailer for the game, which was inspired by cartoons from the 1930s:

Xbox One console exclusive also coming to Windows 10. Cuphead is a classic run and gun action game heavily focused on boss battles. Inspired by cartoons of the 1930s, the visuals and audio are painstakingly created with the same techniques of the era, i.e. traditional hand drawn cel animation, watercolor backgrounds, and original jazz recordings.

Yup, that is all I need out of my Xbox One this year. Th-Th-The, Th-Th-The, Th-Th… That’s all, folks!

Microsoft’s “Epic 2017” includes Crackdown 3, Sea of Thieves, Tacoma, Cuphead, and more

We’re nearly to the end of February, but Microsoft thought today was a great day to launch their first major game of 2017, Halo Wars 2. To celebrate, the consolemaker turned the spotlight on their “Epic 2017” in a special episode of This Week on Xbox.

Besides delving deeper into the latest addition to the Halo franchise, Larry “Major Nelson” Hyrb and friends explore Crackdown 3, Phantom Dust, Sea of Thieves, State of Decay 2, and several indie games (including Ron Gilbert’s Thimbleweed Park and Studio MDHR’s Cuphead) set to launch this year through the ID@Xbox program.

Microsoft’s Chris Charla also confirmed that ID@Xbox developers will have a major presence at GDC 2017, and Microsoft’s Showcase will include more than 20 titles. GDC attendees will get a chance to play Fullbright’s Tacoma (and many others) when the conference kicks off in San Francisco next week.

Finally, Phil “Head of Xbox” Spencer had a few more words to say about Microsoft’s “Epic 2017” on the Xbox Wire, and he also confirmed that a remake of Voodoo Vince will be available for the PC and Xbox One this Spring.

Cuphead’s release date bounces to Mid-2017

cuphead-header

Studio MDHR has announced that Cuphead, a side-scrolling shooter that borrows its look from 1930s cartoons, won’t be released by the end of the year as originally planned. Writing on their official website, the developer announced that Cuphead will now be available sometime in the late Spring or early Summer of 2017:

Throughout this year we discussed reducing the scope to make a 2016 release, but we made the difficult decision to delay the launch in order to ship with our vision intact. We are happy to announce that Cuphead will be coming to Xbox One, Windows 10 and Steam in Mid-2017.

Cuphead originally debuted at E3 2014 as a “Boss Rush” shooter before Studio MDHR revealed the addition of “run and gun” platforming levels earlier this year.

See one of Cuphead’s “run and gun” levels for the first time

Cuphead, Studio MDHR’s deranged side-scrolling shooter, was originally scheduled to be released for the PC and Xbox One last year. But instead, the developer decided to push its release back by nearly a year to make their homage to 1930s animation even grander.

When it was first announced, Cuphead was described as a “Boss Rush” shooter, a game where players would battle a series of increasingly tougher bosses before taking aim at the final boss. However, Studio MDHR’s extra work has added a large number of Contra-esque platforming levels to the game as well, and they’re finally ready to show one off in the E3 2016 trailer embedded above. As you might expect, the animation is beautiful, the soundtrack is jazzy, and the shooting action is intense.

Barring any other delays, Cuphead will be released for the PC and Xbox One sometime this year.
