Two new Dark Souls III trailers reimagine the game as an animated short and 80s Direct-To-Video schlock
With less than two weeks to go before Dark Souls III‘s launch, Bandai Namco has decided to have a little fun with their marketing materials.
First, the publisher commissioned Eli Roth (the director of Cabin Fever and Hostel) to produce an animated short based on the game’s lore. In “The Witches,” a “lonely knight” comes face-to-face with three witches and attempts to repel their attacks. If you’re at all familiar with the Dark Souls franchise, you can guess how well that goes.
The second video reimagines Dark Souls III as the kind of ridiculous Direct-To-Video flick that haunted the shelves of Blockbuster in the 80s and 90s. You can check out a faux commercial for this “VHS release” after the break.
Dark Souls III will be released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on April 12. (more…)
Latest Dark Souls III trailer mixes together “True Colors” and grotesque demons
I’m not sure if Gears of War was the first game to marry a recycled 80s pop tune to a visually discordant trailer, but it’s certainly the most famous example of this mini-movement. And it’s still inspiring publishers and developers today, as Bandai Namco recently released a new Dark Souls III trailer soundtracked by “True Colors.”
Originally recorded by Cyndi Lauper for her album of the same name, a cover of “True Colors” is used in the trailer above to contrast the game’s grotesque menagerie of monsters against the hero’s inner feelings. Will he be consumed by darkness, or serve as a shining beacon to the land? We’ll all find out together when Dark Souls III is released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on April 12.
A Day-By-Day Guide to All of 2016’s New Video Games (April – September)
The Spring and Summer months are currently less dense with new releases than the first three months of the year, but that should change fairly soon, especially since publishers have staked a claim to every week from the beginning of April to the end of June with at least one big new release dropping every seven days.
Are you ready? Because here… we… go… (more…)
Dark Souls III’s Opening Cinematic is appropriately dark and somber
From Software’s Dark Souls franchise has a deep and engrossing backstory that I am woefully unequipped to discuss in any depth. However, that didn’t stop the developer from releasing the Opening Cinematic for the upcoming Dark Souls III. And even without any knowledge of the nuts and bolts of the series, I can still see the beauty in the dark and somber short film.
Dark Souls III will be released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on April 12.
Dark Souls III will be released on April 12; Collector’s Edition announced
Bandai Namco and From Software have unveiled a brand new trailer for Dark Souls III, but this one has a surprise at the end… a release date! The publisher and developer have also announced details about Dark Souls III’s Collector’s Edition, which has been priced at $129.99 and will be available for the PS4 and Xbox One. It’ll include a Dark Souls III Game Disc, Collector’s Box, Prima Starter Guide, Official Soundtrack, Official Art Book, Cloth Game Map, and a 10” Red Knight Statue.
Players who pre-order the standard version of Dark Souls III on the PS4 or Xbox One will be upgraded to the special Day One Edition, which will include the Prima Starter Guide, Official Soundtrack, and “Exclusive O-Sleeve Packaging.”
Dark Souls III will also be released for the PC (via Steam) on April 12.
Dark Souls III will be released in April 2016
Bandai Namco and From Software have narrowed down that “Early 2016” release window for Dark Souls III… but it might not be as early as you’d hoped.
As part of this year’s Tokyo Game Show, the publisher and developer announced that Dark Souls III will be released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One in North America in April 2016. They also confirmed that the game will have a “deeper sense of role-playing” than previous games in the series:
Dark Souls III pushes a deeper sense of role-playing than previous iterations of the series with key additions that provide players with a set of tools and in-game options to customize their gameplay experience. Skills, a new addition to the Dark Souls combat mechanics, adds attack modifiers to each weapon type, allowing players an increased tactical advantage in combat. Increase an axe’s attack power with War Cry or break an enemy’s guard with a quick upward swing from Ready Stance. The choice of if and when players use these added abilities is up to them. Players will also be able to equip their character with a wide variety of armor sets, medieval weaponry, as well as come across powerful sorceries and miracles as they develop their own personal style of play.
From Software must really love the Springtime as the developer will launch a major new title during the season for the third year in a row after this year’s Bloodborne and last year’s Dark Souls II.
Bandai Namco has released a gameplay trailer for Dark Souls III
The Dark Souls franchise will make its PS4 and Xbox One debut early next year (or rather, the first original entry in the series will) and now we’ve gotten our first look at it as Bandai Namco released the first gameplay trailer for Dark Souls III during this week’s Gamescom expo.
If you prefer your action games to be gothic and gruesome, Dark Souls III is the game for you:
Dark Souls III continues to push the boundaries with the latest, ambitious chapter in the critically-acclaimed and genre-defining series. As fires fade and only embers remain, journey once more into a world filled with more daunting and colossal enemies and environments. Players will be immersed into a world of epic atmosphere and darkness through faster gameplay and amplified combat intensity. New to the series are the Battle Arts attacks as each weapon will be equipped with its own unique Battle Art to deliver powerful attacks that will break through enemy defenses.
Dark Souls III will be released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One in early 2016.
