Darksiders II rides into stores on June 26; pre-order bonuses announced

If you buy into the “2012 Phenomenon,” I’ll bet you thought the world was going to end on December 21… but you’d be wrong! The world will actually end on June 26. That’s when the biggest, baddest horseman of all, Death, rides into stores in Darksiders II.

In addition to the release date, THQ also revealed a trio of retailer-specific pre-order bonuses for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 game:

GameStop
Death Rides Pack: Features multiple exclusive side-quests allowing players to explore more of the Maker’s Realm and Dead Plains. In addition players will be able to aid an ancient Construct, battle The Bloodless and retrieve Karn’s lost treasure.

Best Buy
Angel of Death Pack: Features enhanced armor with an angel inspired design as well as a pair of matching scythes. In addition players will receive an exclusive purple colored visual trail for their crow.

Amazon
Deadly Despair Pack: Features an additional speed boost for Death’s horse Despair, that allows players to traverse the world at a much faster rate.

“Death Lives” in new Darksiders II trailer; Summer 2012 release date confirmed

“What Began With War… Ends With Death”

A new Darksiders II trailer is here, and with it, comes confirmation of the game’s Summer 2012 release on the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. Darksiders II is also being planned as a Wii U launch title, so 2012 is going to be a good year to be the Grim Reaper.

Or is the Death that’s a part of the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse a different scythe-wielding skeleton? Demonology is hard.

Darksiders II developer calls PS3 a “pain in the ass”

The PlayStation 3 has come a long way since launching in 2006. It has built a substantial library of blockbuster exclusives, the PSN has grown close to parity with Xbox Live, and most titles coming out look just as good if not better than their 360 counterparts. That doesn’t mean they’ve gotten any easier to make, though.

Speaking with Eurogamer, Darksiders II Game Director Marvin Donald described the PS3 as a “pain in the ass to work on.” Donald went on to say, “there are some things you just can’t do, or you have to do differently. Yeah, it’s a pain.”

It’s hard to argue with the results the PS3 architecture has produced, but I think we all hope that the PlayStation 4 will be a little easier to develop on.

Wii U demo reel footage was from PC, PS3, Xbox 360

Nintendo of America’s president, Reggie Fils-Aime, admitted in an interview to GameTrailers (full interview above) that the footage used in their demo reel was from the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 versions of those games. “We’re talking a year away from when the system’s going to launch,” Fils-Aime said as the reason for using the footage. The footage included Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier and Darksiders II, and other footage shown during the press conference included Battlefield 3 (which hasn’t been formally announced for the Wii U by anyone). The games looked fantastic… but they weren’t being run on Nintendo’s hardware.

I’m not entirely sure how I feel about this. On the one hand, Microsoft and Sony have bought been caught running games on other systems and showing the footage off as their own, but that still doesn’t make Nintendo’s subterfuge ok. On the other hand, this is a misleading and dishonest way to promote the new console, but at least Nintendo came right out and admitted it after the fact. The whole thing has left a bad taste in my mouth. Perhaps a reasonable price tag on the Wii U will get rid of that.

Nintendo @ E3 11: Third party Wii U games include Tekken, Assassin’s Creed, a lot more

After playing a video showing some of the industry’s top developers singing the praises of the Wii U, Nintendo unveiled the third party lineup that’ll be available for the system:

  • Aliens: Colonial Marines
  • Darksiders II (which will be a launch title)
  • Dirt for Wii U
  • Metro: Last Light
  • Ninja Gaiden III: Razor’s Edge (working title)
  • Tekken for Wii U (with a stylus-powered character creator)
  • Batman: Arkham City (which elicited cheers from the crowd)
  • Assassin’s Creed for Wii U
  • Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Online
  • Unnamed Electronics Arts games
  • Unnamed EA Sports games

So basically, every hot PS3 and Xbox 360 game is also in development for the Wii U. While BioShock Infinite wasn’t on the list, Irrational’s Ken Levine was included in the developer montage and seemed very impressed with the Wii U.

Whoa!

THQ officially announces Darksiders II

THQ confirmed that Vigil Games had begun work on Darksiders II a few days after the first Darksiders hit store shelves. Now, nearly 18 months later, the publisher has officially announced that Darksiders II will be released for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 sometime in 2012.

Darksiders II takes place concurrently with the first game, this time following Death during Earth’s final hours. While searching for War in the midst of the Apocalypse, Death will encounter “a dramatically larger world […] as well as bigger and more challenging dungeons and [a] vast array of new enemies and bosses.” In the end, humanity may not need a hero to save them, but Death.

Danny Bilson, Executive Vice President of Core Games, commented: “We have taken the best parts of Darksiders and improved on them with a host of new mechanics and features. You will see great things from this epic game.”

THQ also revealed that Darksiders II will grace the cover of the July issue of Game Informer. Check out the exclusive art from Vigil’s Joe Madureira. It is pretty awesome.
