Super Mario Odyssey takes home “Best of Gamescom” award at 2017 Gamescom expo
Hats off to Super Mario Odyssey…
Nintendo’s upcoming platformer took home five Gamescom Awards this year, including 2017’s “Best of Gamescom” title, as well as “Best Nintendo Switch Game,” “Best Action Game,” “Best Family Game,” and the fan-voted “Most Wanted Consumer Award.”
The only other game to capture multiple Gamescom Awards was Destiny 2, which won “Best Social/Online Game” and “Best Multiplayer Game.”
The international jury spread out the remainder of the Gamescom Awards and chose to honor Assassin’s Creed: Origins (“Best PS4 Game”), Middle-Earth: Shadow of War (“Best Xbox One Game”), Kingdom Come: Deliverance (“Best PC Game”), and Metroid: Samus Returns (“Best Mobile Game”) in the platform categories. Another wide variety of titles (including Project CARS 2, Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom, Pro Evolution Soccer 2018, and others) were big winners in the genre categories.
The complete list of nominees and winners for the 2017 Gamescom Awards can be found after the break. (more…)
Destiny 2’s Open Beta begins on July 21… here’s the first trailer
Destiny 2‘s Open Beta is just a few weeks away, and Bungie has revealed that participants will be able to try out the first mission from the Story Campaign, the “Inverted Spire” Co-Op Strike, and competitive multiplayer. You can get a glimpse at the action in the new trailer embedded above.
According to the developer, prospective Destiny 2 players who pre-order the game will receive Early Access to the upcoming Beta. PS4 pre-purchasers will be able to play their first match on July 18, and Xbox One owners will get to join in a day later on July 19. All players on both platforms will be able to enter the Open Beta on July 21.
Destiny 2 will be released for the PS4 and Xbox One on September 6. The game will also be available for the PC on October 24, with an Open Beta scheduled for sometime in August.
Super Mario Odyssey wins “E3 2017 Best of Show” from Game Critics Awards
A marquee upcoming release for the Nintendo Switch has once again claimed “Best of Show” from the Game Critics Awards at the E3 Expo. Super Mario Odyssey took home the big prize this year, along with additional wins for “Best Console Game” and “Best Action/Adventure Game.”
Altogether, Nintendo took home top honors in six categories. Super Mario Odyssey’s trio of statues were joined by “Best Handheld Game” for Metroid: Samus Returns, and “Best Original Game” and “Best Strategy Game” for Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle.
The editors that make up the Game Critics Awards panel made a lot of obvious picks in the rest of the categories, but they also threw in a few surprises. Strong debuts from Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus (“Best Action Game”), Destiny 2 (“Best PC Game”), and Forza Motorsport 7 (“Best Racing Game”) lead to a few big wins, but I’m not anyone was expecting Arc System Works to surprise the crowd with Dragon Ball Fighter Z.
All of this year’s winners can be found after the break. (more…)
God of War 4, Insomniac’s Spider-Man, new Assassin’s Creed, multiple unannounced titles, more to be unveiled during E3 Coliseum
The full lineup of panels for Geoff Keighley’s inaugural E3 Coliseum has been announced, and it looks like the series will give fans a closer look at God of War 4, Assassin’s Creed 2017, Insomniac’s Spider-Man, and several other upcoming titles. Keighley will also offer a showcase to a few games yet-to-be-announced from Bethesda Softworks, Square Enix, and Epic Games.
If you won’t be attending this year’s E3 Expo, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to tune in as most E3 Coliseum panels will be broadcast through Facebook Live, Twitch, Mixer, and YouTube.
You can find the complete E3 Coliseum schedule after the break. (more…)
Destiny 2’s Story Campaign, and more, unveiled by Bungie
Bungie’s Destiny 2 is less than four months away, and earlier this week the developer revealed more details about their upcoming game in an hour-long livestream.
The biggest change coming to the Destiny universe is the brand new Story Campaign, which will include a dramatic and cinematic narrative structure that can be played solo or with friends:
In the story of Destiny 2, the last safe city on Earth has fallen and lay in ruins, occupied by a powerful new enemy and his elite army, the Red Legion. Every player creates their own character called a “Guardian,” humanity’s chosen protectors. As a Guardian in Destiny 2, players must master new abilities and weapons to reunite the city’s forces, stand together and fight back to reclaim their home.
The livestream also offered the first details on new game types (“Countdown,” a competitive multiplayer mode), new subclasses (“Sentinel Titan,” “Dawnblade Warlock,” and “Arcstrider Hunter”), and an online matchmaking service that Bungie is referring to as “Guided Games.”
Destiny 2 will be available for the PS4 and Xbox One on September 8, and a release date for the game’s PC launch will be announced at a later date. A closer look at the Story Campaign, and a playthrough of the first Story Campaign mission, can be found after the break. (more…)
I Couldn’t Give Two Loots About Destiny 2
Destiny 2 will probably be upon us this year, assuming there are no delays like most AAA game these days. Bungie recently released the first teaser trailer alongside a rather naff logo. Seriously, the new logo looks like it was thrown together in Photoshop by a bored cat. I even managed to cook up some alternate designs while thinking about this opinion piece. The “2” just seems totally out of place. It could be more flush, using Roman numerals to match the Destiny font, or behind it, using a destroyed font to convey that war is coming, or is here already.
The trailer reveals very little about the game itself, beyond the fact that the Guardian Tower has fallen. It’s a clever story device, similar to Shepherd being resurrected at the start of Mass Effect 2, and it allows the game to shirk off aspects of the original, starting afresh with new adventures not constrained by the previous generation.
One issue Destiny fans never had to deal with was its graphics, as it is one of the prettiest first person shooters to grace the a console. The game’s problems lay in what was promised, or what fans hoped for, versus what was actually delivered. Even with The Taken King expansion, which is where I was introduced to the series, the game failed to truly dig into its own mythology, worlds, and threats, and became more of a slog, forcing players to revisit locations for the hundredth time all in the name of loot.
Yet, I don’t want to rant about failed promises of the original game. There is already an excellent post on Bungie’s Community Forums by “TrueMadnessNinja” that delves into the unfulfilled promises of the first entry. This is more of a wish list of things I wish had been in the first game, and I hope Bungie takes a look and can change my mind about picking up the sequel. (more…)
Rally the Troops! Destiny 2 is officially coming to the PC, PS4, Xbox One on September 8
“There will be a ton of loot!”
With that totally unselfish sentiment, Nathan Fillion’s Cayde-6 rallies the troops to take back the Last City in Destiny 2. Humanity has paid the ultimate price at the start of the shooter sequel, which is officially scheduled to launch for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on September 8.
Bungie wants to take players players on an adventure “filled with new destinations around our solar system to explore.” New weapons and abilities, and a “fresh” story, will also greet veteran Guardians and newcomers on the battlefield:
In Destiny 2, the last safe city on Earth has fallen and lay in ruins, occupied by a powerful new enemy and his elite army, the Red Legion. Every player creates their own character called a “Guardian,” humanity’s chosen protectors. As a Guardian in Destiny 2, players must master new abilities and weapons to reunite the city’s forces, stand together and fight back to reclaim their home.
The official Destiny 2 reveal trailer, “Rally the Troops,” shows two of the Vanguard, leaders of the Guardians, inspiring the people of the Last City in an impassioned (and occasionally sarcastic) call to arms. In Destiny 2, players will answer this call, embarking on a fresh story filled with new destinations around our solar system to explore, and an expansive amount of activities to discover. There is something for almost every type of gamer in Destiny 2, including gameplay for solo, cooperative, and competitive players set within a vast, evolving and exciting universe.
Bungie also confirmed that we’ll get our first look at a gameplay reveal during a special livestream on May 18. The broadcast will showcase “a variety of fun, action-oriented activities within Destiny 2, and will highlight the brand-new, epic adventure waiting for players.”
Unfortunately, your characters from the original Destiny will not carry over to Destiny 2. The developer is promising that all players will get a “fresh start” with the sequel.
Players who pre-order Destiny 2 on any platform will receive access to a pre-release beta, and Bungie is planning to offer the game in multiple configurations including a Standard Edition ($59.99), a Standard Edition + Expansion Pass Bundle ($89.99), a Limited Edition ($99.99), and a Digital Deluxe Edition ($99.99) featuring premium digital content. There will also be a Collector’s Edition ($249.99) containing a fully-wearable Frontier Bag, the Expansion Pass, premium digital content, and a Cabal-themed Collector’s Box.
