All Articles: Deus Ex: Human Revolution
The real-life science behind Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Deus Ex: Human Revolution brings up some interesting ideas about the future of the human body. It has limitations. You can’t jump 15 straight up into the air. You can’t crush steel with your fist. But what if you could upgrade your body like the PC you are using to play Deus Ex?
Rob Spence is a cyborg (more specifically an eyeborg, he lost an eye and replaced it with a camera). Join him on a journey through the science behind prosthetic and cyborg technology in Deus Ex: Human Revolution and in real life. From eyes, to arms and legs, Spence showcases some of the most advanced technology in prosthetics.
All we can do is wait and see. Your body might be the next thing to become obsolete.
GameStop gives $50 gift card to Deus Ex: Human Revolution PC purchasers
The Deus Ex: Human Revolution/GameStop kerfuffle is over and the executives at GameStop appear to be really sorry.
After removing an OnLive coupon from every copy of the PC version of the title, GameStop’s customers were resaonably upset. To make this mess right (or make their customers “whole” as Judge Milan would say), GameStop is offering a $50 gift card and a Buy Two, Get One Free coupon on all used games to anyone who bought Deus Ex 3 on the PC. That is way more than making someone “whole” as the original coupon was only good for an OnLive-capable version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution.
While it’s still not completely clear that what GameStop did was legal (though Deus Ex publisher Square Enix was OK with it), this goes a long way towards making the bad press disappear.

GameStop removes OnLive coupons from Deus Ex: Human Revolution; Square Enix is cool with it
Man, they don’t get much weirder than this.
Square Enix, the publisher of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and OnLive, the cloud gaming company, recently announced a deal that the PC version of the game would include a voucher for free access to the OnLive version. Fast forward to yesterday, and we learn that GameStop executives have directed their exployees to open copies of Deus Ex and remove the OnLive coupon. This move is legally dubious at best.
The new release surgery occured because GameStop has their own game streaming service in the works. “Square Enix packed the competitor’s coupon with our DXHR product without our prior knowledge and we did pull and discard these coupons,” GameStop public relations representative Beth Sharum said.
Following the Internet outcry, GameStop pulled all remaining copies of the PC version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution from store shelves. GameStop planned to return all of these copies of the game to their distributor after an agreement with Square Enix.
But then Square Enix comes out and publicly announces that they’re totally cool with GameStop removing the OnLive coupon from the game’s box:
“As part of Deus Ex: Human Revolution’s boxed offering on PC, Square Enix included a third party coupon. GameStop was not made aware of this inclusion and Square Enix respects the right of GameStop to have final say over the contents of products it sells and to adjust them where they see fit in accordance with their policies.”
This story is just bizarre on all sides. GameStop’s cloud gaming initiative, Spawn Labs, is still a year away. Doing battle with Square Enix by physically opening new copies of a game and removing an advertised addition is borderline criminal. We as gamers should be furious. But then Square Enix gives GameStop their blessing to do as they please with the retail copies!
And all of this is happening around a game where corporations control everything. The irony, she burns.
New Releases: Deus Ex Human Revolution, Tropico 4, Devil Survivor 3DS, More
The driest August ever (both weatherwise and gamewise) continues this week as just a handful of new releases will make their way onto store shelves.
The biggest release is the long-awaited Deus Ex: Human Revolution, which will be available on the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. Eidos Montreal has been hard at work on the third Deus Ex game since before the company was purchased by Square Enix. The only other completely new game available this week is Tropico 4. El Presidente’s latest conquest is coming to the PC now and to the Xbox 360 sometime in the future.
The rest of this week’s new releases are all re-releases in some way. Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked is a 3DS remake of the DS game of the same name while Nintendo has the second wave of their Nintendo Selects budget line (Mario Strikers Charged, Punch-Out!!, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Paper Mario) set for release this week.
Slim pickings to be sure (though Punch-Out!! is a complete steal at $19.99), but the big autumn game avalanche is coming soon. So be patient.
Deus Ex “Conspiracy” trailer has more to it than it’s letting on
In our exclusive interview with the Game Director of Deus Ex, Jean-Francois Dugas let us know how important it was for the team to create a plot where the player is always guessing at who to trust and what’s really going on. In addition the same great visuals and sound we’ve gotten from past trailers, the latest Deus Ex: Human Revolution piece captures that there’s some really shady stuff going on.
We’ll all get a chance to figure out exactly what that is when Deus Ex relases for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 on August 23.
Square Enix’s E3 lineup includes playable Final Fantasy XIII-2
Final Fantasy XIII-2, which was first announced at Square Enix’s 1st Production Premier event back in January, will headline the publisher’s E3 slate.
The game will be playable for the first time on the E3 show floor, where it will be joined by other big titles like Hitman: Absolution, Tomb Raider and Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Suffice it to say, Square Enix has hugely embraced the Eidos Interactive properties they acquired back in 2009. Square Enix will also be showcasing Deep Silver’s Dead Island at their booth, which they will distribute in North America.
Hit the jump for a ton of information on Square Enix’s E3 lineup straight from the publisher. (more…)
Deus Ex viral marketing: Sarif Industries testimonials
Sarif Industries has helped these people achieve better lives, and they can help you, too. In one of the creepiest viral marketing videos I’ve seen for a game, we get a little taste of the transhumanist themes of the upcoming Deus Ex: Human Revolution.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution launches on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 on August 23. In the meantime, check out our exclusive interview with Game Director Jean-Francois Dugas.
Interview: Augmenting Deus Ex: Human Revolution With Game Director Jean-Francois Dugas
One of the more high profile developers we got to interview at PAX East 2011 was Jean-Francois Dugas, Game Director on Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Eidos Montreal hopes the upcoming sequel will establish the franchise as a dominant force in gaming, but it’s been a long journey for Dugas and his team in their attempt to accomplish that. Throughout the interview we talk about the challenges of reviving an older franchise, their unique relationship with their Japanese publisher, Warren Spector’s feedback, and influences from movies to anime to Metal Gear to… Professor Layton?
