All Articles: Doom (2016)
Doom: Annihilation will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on October 1
Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has announced they’ll release Doom: Annihilation on Blu-ray and DVD on October 1… just in time for the spooky season.
Doom: Annihilation is a Direct-To-Video reboot for the film franchise, and it won’t have any connection to 2005’s Doom (which, believe it or not, starred The Rock before he became one of the biggest movie stars in the world). Nor is it based on id Software’s excellent Doom 2016 or it’s upcoming sequel, Doom Eternal. However, it is rated R (for “bloody violence and language throughout”), and it has portals to Hell, a bunch of nasty demons, and a platoon of space marines to serve as gory cannon fodder:
Based on the popular original video game, Doom: Annihilation is an explosive, terrifying thrill ride. On the darkest moon of Mars, scientists have found an ancient portal which allows teleportation throughout the universe. Considered to be mankind’s greatest discovery, it’s actually a gateway from Hell, unleashing a swarm of demons looking to steal the souls of everyone who gets in their way. It’s up to Lieutenant Joan Dark and an elite unit of Marines to destroy an ever-growing horde of bloodsucking and soul-stealing beasts and prevent them from taking over planet Earth.
Doom: Annihilation probably won’t be a cinematic masterpiece, but there’s surely worse ways to fill time on a dreary October day.
Here’s the first Teaser Trailer for the Doom movie reboot Doom: Annihilation
Universal Studios has been promising/threatening to release a new film based on id Software’s Doom for years. But even though original stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Karl Urban, and Rosamund Pike all became massive stars in the intervening years since 2005’s Doom, the studio decided to go the reboot route when they officially announced the new adaptation last April.
Now we know that it’ll be titled Doom: Annihilation and that it looks to be a slightly more faithful adaptation of the game franchise. A newly released Teaser Trailer gives us a glimpse at a platoon of space marines (though no clearcut shot of the Doomguy), a roving band of demonic imps, goretastic special effects, and the promise that unethical scientific shenanigans opened a “Portal to Hell.”
However, the film also looks to have a much lower budget than 2005’s Doom, and that’s because Doom: Annihilation will be released direct to DVD/Blu-ray and streaming services sometime this Fall.
And just in case you were wondering what the developers at id Software think of the new film, they rather bluntly informed a fan that “We’re not involved with the movie” on Twitter.
Universal’s Direct-To-DVD studio is making another Doom movie
Critics were extremely unkind to Universal’s Doom adaptation way back in 2005. Even though it features a stacked cast (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Karl Urban, and Rosamund Pike), the film could only garner a measly 19% on Rotten Tomatoes. But come on, that first-person scene was pretty badass, wasn’t it?
And now that Doom 2016 has rejuvenated the franchise, Universal is going back to the Doom universe for a new movie.
According to a new report on Variety, the studio’s “Direct-To-DVD” arm, Universal 1440 Entertainment, will produce the untitled sequel. Universal 1440 Entertainment is most recently responsible for the Death Race sequels (the ones without Jason Statham) and the Tremors sequels (the ones with Michael Gross, but without Kevin Bacon).
The news of another Doom movie was originally confirmed by actress and singer Nina Bergman on Twitter. She wrote that she has a starring role in the sequel, which is set to start shooting soon in Bulgaria with “a super cool Director.”
There’s no word yet on who’s going to sign up to play the Doomguy… or if the Doomguy will even be included in the film for that matter. Other key questions – such as “When will it be released?” and “Will it take place on Mars?” – also went unanswered by Universal.

Become part of The Resistance in Wolfenstein II’s awesome Launch Trailer… Doom officially launches for the Switch on November 10
Captain America rather famously socked Adolf Hitler in the jaw back in the 1940s, but Wolfenstein’s BJ Blazkowicz has a more extreme reaction to finding Nazis on American soil in an alternate 1960s. And Blazkowicz’s love of heavy artillery is actually rather similar to Doomguy’s reaction to the forces of Hell on Mars, which will be available for Switch owners very soon.
