Will Square Enix release the next Dragon Quest game outside of the Japan? And if they do, how long will we have to wait? RPG fans have had to go through this same song and dance for most entries in the franchise, and it looks like things won’t be in different for the upcoming Dragon Quest XI: In Search of the Departed Time. But a Dutch PR firm may have spilled the beans a bit early.

Speaking to Gamer.nl, the unnamed company revealed they would be handling public relations for the title after Square Enix launches Dragon Quest XI in Europe and the rest of the “Western market.”

But assuming the company is telling the truth, we still don’t know when Dragon Quest XI will be available outside of Japan. And we also don’t know if all three versions of the game (it’s in development for the 3DS, PS4, and Switch) will make the trip.

All we know for sure is that Dragon Quest XI: In Search of the Departed Time is set to launch in Japan for the 3DS and PS4 on July 29. I hope you have your dancing shoes on, because anything after that (including the launch date for the Switch version in Japan) is still a mystery.

Square Enix debuted two new trailers for Dragon Quest XI: In Search of the Departed Time at last week’s Jump Festa in Japan. The massive new RPG is currently in development for the 3DS and PS4, though Nintendo Japan finally confirmed that it will also be available for the Switch.

The Cinematic Trailer, embedded above, will introduce fans to the game’s main characters and some of the new monster designs. Meanwhile, a new Gameplay Trailer, available after the break, gives fans a look at the 3D open world of the PS4 version and the more retro stylings of the 3DS version.

Dragon Quest XI: In Search of the Departed Time will be released sometime in 2017 in Japan. It’s unknown when, or if, the RPG will make its way to North America. (more…)

Square Enix announced the next game in the long-running Dragon Quest franchise today, while also kicking off the frenzy for more information on Nintendo’s NX system.

Dragon Quest XI: In Search of the Departed Time is the name of the next game in the series and its in development for the 3DS, PS4, and Nintendo’s NX system. The announcement event was held in Japan, and currently, Square Enix has only confirmed that the game will receive a Japanese release. However, we Dragon Quest fans in America should remain hopeful as the eleventh entry in the series will drop the MMO style of Dragon Quest X and return to the franchise’s single-player roots.

Dragon Quest XI: In Search of the Departed Time will be directed by Yuji Horii, with character designs by Akira Toriyama, and music by Koichi Sugiyama. A development house by the name of Orca will assist with the game’s production.

We don’t know much else about the game at this point, though we do know that the 3DS version will include a 3D game world on the top screen and a 2D sprite-based world map on the bottom screen. It’s a pretty neat effect and could make the handheld version of Dragon Quest XI the one to get. We also know that Toy Logic will assist in the development of the 3DS version.
