Dying Light parkours to the top of the best-sellers list for January 2015
Question… if only one major new title made its way to stores in January, should we be surprised when that game takes the top spot in the monthly sales rankings from the NPD Group? We probably shouldn’t be, and yet, I was still mildly surprised that Techland’s Dying Light was the best-selling game during 2015’s first four-week frame. It was followed by the two biggest titles from 2014… Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare at #2 and Grand Theft Auto V at #3.
Minecraft, coming in at #4, continues to rise even without the holiday shopping season to bolster its sales rank.
Every other title in the top ten seemed to land in roughly the same position it held in December. NBA 2K15 held onto the #5 spot while Super Smash Bros. For Wii U / Super Smash Bros. For 3DS dropped two places to #6. Far Cry 4 was lucky number seven once more while the #8 spot was taken by Madden NFL 15 (which dropped five spots from #3). The final two spots were once again held by Destiny (#9) and FIFA 15 (#10).
While the best-selling software list was relatively stable (and saw a 5% year-over-year increase in sales), the PS4 reigned supreme on the console charts after a one-month hiatus. This turn of events was most likely due to Microsoft’s temporary suspension of the Xbox One’s $50 discount (it was reinstated on January 18).
If you’re looking for the full top ten from January 2015 in list form, you can find it after the break. (more…)
Xbox Store Today: Dying Light
It looks like just one game was added to the Xbox Games Store today and it’s Techland’s Dying Light for the Xbox One. The makers of Dead Island and Dead Island Riptide are back with another zombie title, this time centering around a vast city teeming with the undead. And those undead get nastier when the sun goes down (apparently, even zombies get Seasonal Affective Disorder). Thankfully, the human survivors can perform some sweet parkour moves to avoid the flesh-eating hordes:
Dying Light ($59.99)
Dying Light is a first-person, action survival game set in a vast open world. Roam a city devastated by a mysterious epidemic, scavenging for supplies and crafting weapons to help defeat the hordes of flesh-hungry enemies the plague has created. At night, beware the Infected as they grow in strength and even more lethal nocturnal predators leave their nests to feed on their prey. Live to survive another day. Good Night, Good Luck.
Dying Light, Grim Fandango Remastered, Life Is Strange Episode 1, more added to PS Store
It’s all about the undead in this week’s PlayStation Store update:
- Zombies figure prominently in Techland’s Dying Light for the PS4. The first-person survival game incorporates a day/night cycle and gives parkour moves to the player-controlled characters.
- The afterlife of the undead is the focus of Grim Fandango Remastered, a PS4/Vita Cross-Buy re-release of the popular adventure game from Tim Tim Schafer. Only Manny Calavera, a travel agent at the Department of Death, could make Limbo this exciting.
- The first episode of Dontnod’s Life Is Strange (available Friday on the PS3 and PS4) introduces us to Max, a woman who is able to bring people back to life thanks to her ability to rewind time.
Two decidedly un-undead games were also added to the Vita storefront this week. There’s the wacky RPG antics of HyperDimension Neptunia ReBirth 2: Sisters Generation and the dark puzzle-platforming of Nihilumbra.
More information on all of these games can be found after the break and a full rundown of this week’s new game add-ons and discounts can be found at the PlayStation Blog. (more…)
New Releases: Dying Light, HyperDimension Neptunia ReBirth2: Sisters Generation
Two new releases will be available in stores this week and they are…
Dying Light is a first person zombie game from Techland (the makers of Dead Island) that will introduce a day/night cycle to the action as well as include parkour elements partially designed by David Belle, the creator of parkour. It will be available for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
Also scheduled for release next week is HyperDimension Neptunia ReBirth2: Sisters Generation, a Vita remake of HyperDimension Neptunia MK2, an RPG that was originally released for the PS3 in 2012. The Vita remake will add new playable characters and minigames while also making the whole game portable for the first time.
Check back soon for more details on several new releases scheduled to launch on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Games Store, and Nintendo eShop this week.
PS3, Xbox 360 versions of Dying Light canceled by Techland
Dying Light, Techland’s parkour-infused zombie game, was originally in development for new-gen consoles (PS4 and Xbox One), previous-gen consoles (PS3 and Xbox 360), and the PC. However, now the developer is saying that the PS3 and Xbox 360 won’t be able to handle their full vision for the game. In an open letter to fans, Techland revealed the thought process behind the cancellation of the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Dying Light:
Therefore, after thorough internal testing, we have come to the conclusion that we have no choice but to leave past-gen systems behind and release Dying Light exclusively on the next-gen consoles and PC. Put simply, older consoles just couldn’t run the game and stay true to the core vision of Dying Light at the same time.
To ensure you enjoy Dying Light as much as we would like you to, we chose to release it without any compromises on the three strongest systems available. Thanks to this, you’ll get the full and best experience regardless of the platform you play on.
The PC, PS4, and Xbox One editions of Dying Light are still on track for a January 27, 2015 release. You can read the full letter from Techland after the break. (more…)
Insert Quarter: “Playing A Game” Versus “Grinding Through Content”
Insert Quarter is our showcase for some of the best and most interesting writing about video games on the Internet.
In this installment, Kotaku’s Yannick LeJacq examines the difference between “playing a game” and “grinding through content” added by the developer to increase the hours required to reach the end in games like Dying Light and The Sims 4.
Earlier this week, Techland announced that its new zombie-killing adventure Dying Light will have “50+ hours of gameplay.” Some might considering this good news. I don’t—at least at face value.
Why? Because 50 hours is a long [*******] time to spend in any video game, and I don’t trust Techland enough as a developer to believe they know how to guide me through such a slog gracefully. I took me roughly half that time to play their last zombie game, Dead Island Riptide. I loved the first few hours, and couldn’t stand the rest.

Dying Light parkours to an earlier release date: January 27
Previously pegged for a February release, Techland has announced the release date of Dying Light is moving up to January. January 27, 2015 to be exact. In development for the PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One, Dying Light adds a free running/parkour element to evading zombie hordes, which you slightly get a taste of in this promotional image for the new release date released by Techland:

Techland has another unconventional first-person game planned for 2015, the medieval melee monster hunter known as Hellraid, which will be released digitally for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Hopefully, it’ll get an official release date soon as well.
