Evolve’s last behind-the-scenes trailer is all about “Creating A Monster”

Turtle Rock Studios has posted the fifth, and final, episode of “The Evolution of Evolve,” their behind-the-scenes look at Evolve. This episode is all about the Monsters and how Turtle Rock attempted to make the beasts less alien and more relatable to players. Because I know that when I’m hunting human prey in the forest, I think of myself as a giant Cthulhu-like demon. Everybody does that, right?

Evolve will be released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on Feburary 10, but Turtle Rock will host a beta test in January, which you can read all about here.

Turtle Rock unveils Evolve’s third Monster, Wraith, and beta test details

If the Monster you’re unveiling is an invisible she-beast that can kill you without being seen, can it really be called an unveiling? That’s the question we’ll have to grapple with as Turtle Rock Studios has released a trailer showcasing Evolve‘s third monster design, Wraith. Writing on the game’s official website, Turtle Rock laid out the four attacks that make Wraith more of a deadly assassin than an out-and-out brawler:

  • Warp Blast allows Wraith to travel almost instantly to a target and create an explosion wherever she lands, dealing damage to everything around her.
  • Her Decoy ability spawns a dangerous clone of herself that attacks targets while distracting the Hunters. With the Decoy deployed, Wraith becomes invisible and the Decoy can be used strategically to escape from combat or allow the player to re-position themselves for surprise attacks.
  • Abduction steals hunters away from their teammates. During an abduction attack, Wraith travels large distances, grabs the target, and returns to her original location all within the blink of an eye.
  • Supernova creates a large arena for Wraith to fight in. Inside the Supernova, Wraith becomes a frenzied melee beast of pure energy as her scythe-like blades cut down just about anything in their path. If Wraith leaves the Supernova area, she returns to her normal state.

For an even more in-depth look at Wraith, Turtle Rock has released an extended Interactive Trailer featuring a full battle between four Hunters and a Wraith. You can find it after the break.

In other Evolve news, the developer has announced that Xbox One owners will be able to take part in an open beta test on January 15. PC players will be able to jump into the test on January 16 with PS4 players following a day later on the 17th. However, neither of these platforms will have an open test. On the PS4, participants will be limited to those that played Evolve’s “Big Alpha.” “Big Alpha” players will also get in on the beta on the PC and they’ll be joined by owners of Left 4 Dead or BioShock Infinite, who will also receive invites. More details about each platform’s beta test can be found at Evolve’s official website.

Evolve will be released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on February 10. (more…)

Insert Quarter: The Rise and Fall of THQ’s Empire

insertquarter-header

Insert Quarter is our showcase for some of the best and most interesting writing about video games on the Internet.

Gamers often didn’t know what to make of THQ. The publisher built its empire on the backs of tie-in games based on Nickelodeon and Pixar properties such as SpongeBob SquarePants and The Incredibles. But they also produced intriguing original games such as Saints Row: The Third and Darksiders. They were even the initial driving force behind Evolve, one of 2015’s most anticipated games. But that all changed when the company went bankrupt early last year.

So what happened? Tracey Lien, writing for Polygon, set out to discover the answer by talking to as many former THQ employees as she could including the charismatic (but possibly crazy) Danny Bilson. Her portrait of a publisher in free fall makes you wonder, could anything have been done?

Many blame the company’s fall on the licensed games well drying up. Some pin it on the commercial failure of the company’s uDraw tablet for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Others point to poor management and too many risky bets.

“There isn’t any one, isolated event that killed the company,” says a former THQ executive who asked to not be named. “This was one of the most successful video game businesses in America. We were a billion dollar company. It was complicated.”

THQ suffered a “death by a million spider bites,” the executive says.

Turtle Rock: Evolve’s DLC maps will be free

evolve-header

Turtle Rock’s Creative Director, Phil Robb, recently sat down with IGN and confirmed that all post-release maps for Evolve will be free. The consumer-friendly move is an attempt by Turtle Rock to keep the Evolve community from splitting into multiple different factions:

“First thing we [Evolve’s creative leads] said was we can’t break the community up, so all of our maps will be free. We never want anyone to get booted off of a server because they haven’t bought something.”

Robb also revealed that Evolve will receive paid DLC in the forms of additional Hunters and Monsters. However, players will still be able to join games featuring downloadable Hunters or Monsters regardless of whether or not they’ve purchased them:

“We’ll have characters and monsters, and even if you don’t buy them, if your buddy wants to buy the DLC, that’s cool, and your game will be enhanced through his purchase,” Robb said. “So, you won’t be able to play as those characters, but you will certainly be able to play with those characters.”

Evolve will likely be one of 2015’s earliest hits when it’s released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on February 10.
