An open beta for Fallout 4’s modding tools is now available on the PC
Fallout 4 is about to get a whole lot crazier on the PC as Bethesda has announced Creation Kit is now available. Using the included modding tools, players will be able to craft new “quests, environments, characters, dialogue, outfits, weapons, and more” for other Fallout 4 players.
Players can search for new mods from within Fallout 4 by selecting “Mods” from the Main Menu. There, they’ll be able to select a mod, download it, offer feedback, and rate it all from the same spot.
Bethesda is still tweaking the Creation Kit tools, so the framework is currently available to download as an open beta through the Bethesda.net launcher. But eventually, Bethesda wants to make the Creation Kit available for the PS4 and Xbox One in June, and cross-platform compatibility for mods looks likely.
Fallout 4 wins “Best Game” at 2016 BAFTA Games Awards
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) held their annual Games Awards ceremony last night, and Bethesda’s Fallout 4 looted the trophy for “Best Game.” Surprisingly, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Fallout 4’s main rival throughout the 2015/2016 awards season, came away empty-handed.
The same doesn’t need to be said for Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, Her Story, and Rocket League, each of which won three awards last night.
Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture’s accolades all revolved around its excellent use of sound as the post-apocalyptic title won for “Audio Achievement,” “Music,” and “Best Performance” (which went to Merle Dandridge). Rocket League’s universal appeal informed its three award including “Family Game,” “Multiplayer,” and “Sport.” Finally, Her Story’s unique storytelling structure lead to wins in the “Best Debut,” “Game Innovation,” and “Mobile & Handheld” categories.
Other winners during last night’s ceremony include Ori and the Blind Forest, Batman: Arkham Knight, Bloodborne, Until Dawn, Prison Architect, and Life Is Strange.
Congratulations to all the winners, which you can find after the break. (more…)
Fallout 4: Wasteland Workshop will be available next week
Bethesda has said they will release Fallout 4‘s next add-on, Wasteland Workshop, on April 12. The PC, PS4, and Xbox One download will be part of the Fallout 4 Season Pass, but all players can pick it up as a standalone download for $4.99.
Wasteland Workshop will add a number of new design options (nixie tube lighting, letter kits, taxidermy, and more) to the game, along with a series of creature cages that can be used to capture anything from a tiny kitty cat to a raging Deathclaw. Players will be able to tame these fearsome beasts (I’m referring, of course, to the cat) or force them to fight in your own version of Thunderdome.
A new trailer for Wasteland Workshop has been embedded above.
Fallout 4: Automatron will be available on March 22… and here’s the first trailer
Bethesda has announced that Fallout 4‘s first downloadable expansion, Automatron, will be released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on March 22. They’ve even released an official trailer for the robot-wrecking adventure, and it’s been embedded above.
In the expansion, players will be able to build a variety of robot companions using hundreds of pieces and parts, all so they can do battle with the Mechanist and his army of evil robots:
In Automatron (for characters level 15 or higher), the mysterious Mechanist has unleashed a horde of evil robots into the Commonwealth, including the devious Robobrain. Hunt them down and harvest their parts to build and mod your own custom robot companions. Choose from hundreds of mods; mixing limbs, armor, abilities, and weapons such as the all-new lightning chain gun. Even customize their paint schemes and choose their voices!
Bethesda has big plans for Fallout 4’s downloadable content. Players will be able to expand their settlements this April in Wasteland Workshop. And beginning in May, the massive Far Harbor expansion will add “the largest landmass Bethesda Game Studios has ever created for post-release content” to the game.
Far Cry: Primal was the best-selling game of February 2016
It’s time to listen to the mastodon roar as Ubisoft’s Far Cry: Primal was declared the best-selling game of February 2016 by The NPD Group. Proving that players might be in the market for more titles that feature pre-modern warfare, Far Cry: Primal beat out Call of Duty: Black Ops III, which took the #2 slot.
Several other new releases broke into the top ten last month, including Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 at #4 and Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright at #9. But the most surprising result might be the less-than-stellar debut of Capcom’s Street Fighter V. Even after a big push from Sony, the much-hyped fighting game was only able to punch its way to #7.
Sales of new PS3 and Xbox 360 games continued to drop last month, and total retail spending on new games slipped 10% from February 2015. Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, NPD’s Liam Callahan said: “New physical software trends suffered due to a sharp decline in seventh generation consoles of 52% despite the 14% (or $28 million growth) in eighth generation software. Portable software also had a drop of 30% due to a poor comparison to the launch of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D, which coincided with the launch of the New 3DS.”
A complete look at last month’s top ten best-selling titles can be found after the break. (more…)
Bethesda will add official mod support to Fallout 4 (on PC) in April; Console release to lag one-two months behind
Bethesda’s Todd Howard is a very busy man. But the company’s Studio Director found the time to sit down for a discussion with Game Informer recently, where he revealed that official mod support for the PC version of Fallout 4, AKA the Creation Kit, will be available in April. Howard also confirmed that PS4 and Xbox One owners will get a chance to play with Fallout 4’s mod tools, but they likely won’t be ready until May or June:
Game Informer: When can we expect to see mods, especially on console side?
Howard: Our goal is between the first two DLCs. It’ll go up at that time on PC. In April. All of that stuff will go up on PC. People are beta testing it. There’ll be a lag on consoles. We want to get it up on PC and have it work. It’ll probably be a good month before it hits Xbox One, and another month for PlayStation 4.
Howard was a huge presence at last week’s DICE Awards, when he trudged to the stage on Thursday to collect “Game of the Year” honors for Fallout 4. That same day, he also had a conversation with comedian Pete Holmes and told the audience that Bethesda is currently working on three unannounced projects that are, in his words, “big and crazy.”
