CoD: Black Ops III, Fallout 4, SW: Battlefront lead November 2015’s best-selling games

callofdutyblackops3-header

Not surprisingly, a trio of shooters took the top three spots in the NPD Group’s recounting of November 2015’s best-selling games.

Call of Duty: Black Ops III scored another big win for Activision (and the Black Ops sub-series) with its claim on the top spot. It was followed by Fallout 4 at #2 and Star Wars: Battlefront at #3. With shooters holding on to the top of the list, sports games looked in for the next four places… Madden NFL 16 (#4), NBA 2K16 (#5), FIFA 16 (#6), and Need For Speed (#7). What? I’m sure someone, somewhere, thinks of illegal street racing as a sport.

The final three spots in the NPD’s November 2015 list include repeat appearances from Halo 5: Guardians (#8) and Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate (#9), along with a strong Black Firday-assisted performance from Just Dance 2016 (#10).

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, NPD’s Liam Callahan confirmed that the PS4 and Xbox One are having a monster Fall: “After 25 months, the combined sales for the PS4 and the Xbox One are 47% higher than the combined sales for 25 months of PS3 and Xbox 360 hardware sales.”

You can find the NPD’s November 2015 top ten in handy list format after the break. (more…)

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt leads all nominees at the 2015 Game Awards

Geoff Keighley’s Game Awards are back for another year and the nominees for the 2015 edition were announced late last week. From Software’s Bloodborne, Bethesda’s Fallout 4, Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Nintendo’s Super Mario Maker, and CD Project Red’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will all compete for the coveted “Game of the Year.”

Besides Game of the Year, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt actually lead the competition with six total nominations including “Best Narrative,” “Best Performance,” “Best Art Direction,” “Best Score/Soundtrack,” and “Best Role-Playing Game.” CD Projekt Red is also up for “Developer of the Year” due to their exemplary work on the game.

The 2015 Game Awards will be held on Thursday, December 3 at 9:00 PM (Eastern Time). Fans will be able to watch the show on a variety of platforms and devices including YouTube, Twitch, Steam, the PlayStation Network, Wii U, Xbox Live, and Go90. And don’t forget, plenty of “World Premiere Trailers” will make their debut in between the awards.

The full list of nominees and awards can be found after the break. (more…)

Xbox Store Today: Rise of the Tomb Raider, Fallout 4, more

riseofthetombraider-header

2013’s Tomb Raider was a huge undertaking for Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics, but the reboot breathed new life into the franchise, making a sequel practically mandatory. Rather than break the bank a second time, Square Enix partnered with Microsoft to help produce the game, making Rise of the Tomb Raider temporarily exclusive on the Xbox One and Xbox 360. In Lara Croft’s latest adventure, which is available to download through the Xbox Games Store for both platforms beginning today, the first lady of archaeology explores ancient tombs in search of the secret to immortality. I don’t know if she’s successful or not, but Lara will always live forever in my eyes.

Also available this week for the Xbox One is Fallout 4… just a little game from Bethesda… you may have heard of it. Taking place in and around Boston, Fallout 4 follows the sole survivor of Vault 111 as he (or, for the first time, she) attempts to survive in the post-apocalyptic Wasteland.

More details about both of these games, along with the free-to-play “Puzzle RPG” Gems of War and the Jackbox Party Pack party game compilation, can be found after the break. (more…)

Fallout 4, Super Dodge Ball, Superbeat: Xonic, more added to PS Store

fallout4-header

It’s definitely not the Summertime, but rival game publishers have decided to treat Fallout 4 like a Hollywood-style blockbuster that needs to be avoided on the release calendar. Bethesda’s post-apocalyptic adventure makes its PS4 debut as part of this week’s PlayStation Store update and it’s practically the only new game available.

But players who aren’t interested in battling Deathclaws in the vicinity of Vault 111 still have a handful of options to choose from:

  • Super Dodge Ball is a PS4 re-release of the 1987 arcade game that served as the source for the classic NES game.
  • Kromaia Ω is a “bullet hell” shooter for the PS4 with “21st century” touches.
  • SkyScrappers is a vertically-scrolling platform fighter for the PS4 that takes place on a teetering skyscraper.
  • Spelunker World is a free-to-play platformer for the PS4 that looks an awful lot like Spelunky.
  • Phineas and Ferb: Day of Doofenshmirtz is another game based on the popular Disney show, now available for the Vita.
  • Superbeat: Xonic is a rhythm game for the Vita with more than 50 songs.

More information on all of these games is available after the break. And a complete rundown of this week’s new game add-ons and discounts can be found at the PlayStation Blog. (more…)

Fallout 4 Review: There’s Just Something S.P.E.C.I.A.L. About It

fallout4-header

Let’s not mince words, Fallout 4 is clearly the most anticipated title of 2015 for most gamers. Fans of Fallout are furiously intense about the game, though I was never one of those people. But I found myself carried along by the hype and excited to play the latest in the series. While I have to admit I haven’t finished it yet – mostly because who has that kind of time in their lives – I am immersed in this world, and find myself constantly checking the clock while I’m playing because it keeps lulling me into that false sense of “you won’t stay up until 1:00 AM.”

Spoiler alert… I haven’t gone to bed before 1:00 AM since I received it. (more…)

New Releases: Fallout 4, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Starcraft II: Legacy of the Void, More

newreelases111015

It is time. Bethesda is ready to open the Vault and unleash Fallout 4 on the world. The first-person RPG will be available for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One, and it’ll let players explore a post-apocalyptic New England and craft a new world to their heart’s content. And if that kind of openness and epicness doesn’t appeal to you, there’s always Super Mutants to shoot.

Bethesda has also partnered with Microsoft to offer a 1TB Xbox One + Fallout 4 Bundle in case you haven’t made your new-generation console decision yet.

Speaking of Microsoft, the consolemaker will also partner with Square Enix this week to exclusively launch Rise of the Tomb Raider for the Xbox One and Xbox 360. Lara Croft’s next adventure will eventually make its debut on the PC and PS4 in 2016, but for now, you’ll need to raid tombs and make insane archaeological discoveries on a Microsoft platform.

Stepping out of the past and rocketing into the future, this week will also see the release of Starcraft II: Legacy of the Void, the finale to Blizzard’s StarCraft II trilogy. Focusing on the Protoss, the standalone game will actually “unite the three races in the ultimate battle for survival against an ancient evil threatening all life in the universe.”

Finally this week, a pair of Wii U exclusives prove that Nintendo’s little corner of video gaming is still an interesting place to be. Nintendo themselves will publish Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival, a board game that is changed and shaped as Amiibo figures and Amiibo Cards are dropped into play. And NIS America will release Rodea: The Sky Soldier, another skybound adventure from Yuji Naka, the creator of Nights Into Dreams.

The complete list of this week’s new releases can be found after the break. (more…)

Fallout 4 launch trailer is here and it features plenty of gameplay footage

I know that some other heavily hyped game is now available in stores as of today, but Fallout fans are also in a tizzy over the pending launch of Fallout 4. So now is the perfect time for Bethesda to deliver the game’s epic launch trailer.

Clocking in at almost three minutes, the Fallout 4 launch trailer features a ton of gameplay footage and one very loyal dog.

Fallout 4 will be released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on November 10. To further prepare yourself, I recommend watching Bethesda’s S.P.E.C.I.A.L. video series (Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, Luck) one more time.

Fallout 4’s S.P.E.C.I.A.L. series of videos comes to an end with a visit from Lady Luck

“Following total atomic annihilation, the rebuilding of this great nation of ours may fall to you. Study these materials carefully to ensure your survival and to discover what makes you S.P.E.C.I.A.L.”

Bethesda’s series of educational videos highlighting the seven attributes players need to survive Fallout 4‘s Wasteland has finally come to an end with a look at Luck. After mastering six other S.P.E.C.I.A.L. skills (Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, and Agility), players will need Lady Luck on their side if they hope to randomly find treasure or defeat enemies with a magic bullet. But watch out, the finger of fate is fickle and it may just squash you like a bug (or, you know, send a colony of mutant bugs to eat you).

Thanks to Bethesda (and to Vault-Tec) for producing the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. series of videos. I feel much better informed on life (and Luck) than I did during the Summer. There’s just a little more than two weeks to go before Fallout 4’s November 10th launch on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One… so there’s plenty of time to watch these videos over and over again. After all, knowledge is a wonderful thing.
